The Professor (Magic: The Gathering, Tolarian Community College) on TYSO -

  • Having a podcast allows us to showcase some incredible people, and this week is no different... This week's guest isn’t our typical comedian/entertainer, but he is THE PROFESSOR!… Of Tolarian Community College, which isn’t so much a college and actually a #1 Magic The Gathering TH-cam channel!
If you aren't too familiar with Magic The Gathering, it doesn't matter because this episode is about so much more than just a trading card game (that being said, during this episode, Rick DOES open a package that contains a very rare, early 90's booster box).
Immediately The professor (aka Brian Lewis) and Rick bond over similar anxieties and being uncomfortable in the world outside their safety net.
Brian recounts his friendless childhood, barking like a dog at school, and being likened to Forest Gump as a teen. Rick connects to Brian's inability to find his tribe and finds a through line in his own life with finding comedy.
Now running a successful TH-cam with hundreds of thousands of subscribers and a lucrative patron, Brian insists that “The Gathering” remains the most important part of playing the game.
Rick unpacks Brian's career from Teachers assistant to successful TH-camr, his opinions on collectables and how Magic The Gathering ’s rules make it easier to navigate than this complicated world.
This is the episode for anyone who didn’t fit in at school or is still looking for their community… he goes to show that everyone can find their people and become VERY successful in doing so.
Oh and of course this weeks sponsors! Supporting them supports the podcast and really helps us create content.

I discovered The Professor a few months ago and I'm very sorry for his infancy.
I immediately became very fond of him and I have to thank him.
I've been playing Magic the gathering since 2005 and had lost the passion a bit.
Thanks to his videos, his charisma and his friendliness I went back to loving the game and interpreting it in another way, his way: playing and having fun together.
Thank you Professor for your videos. Thank you for everything from a huge Italian fan of yours.

    Prof.
You said: "Thank you for sticking with me, I *will* make it up to you"
You said it because you meant it; all the way thru down to your core.
Sticking with you is not our punishment. It is not an investment that we hope to see pay off.
We love you. That is why we are here.
If you don't let yourself feel that, this was all a waste of your time and ours.

I enjoy what he said about how he is accomplishing things now rather than just getting by and just existing, and that what he does is "special" to him. I fucking love that, man. That's what it's about. I am trying to find that thing for me. I'm a borderline obsessive NBA card collector. I've never had a Magic card and am clueless about the game. But as a fellow card collector, I LOVE hearing Rick discuss his hobby. This episode is off to a great start, and I'm excited to keep listening!

I love how Rick is so open and direct about how he may try to steer the conversation in his show. I think normally that stuff isn’t on screen, so it’s cool to see someone just being that way

I am the inverse of what Prof was talking about. I am highly invested in Magic and I became of fan of your show because I heard you talk about Magic. I also love stand-up and listen to a lot of comedic podcasts so it was a great "worlds collide" moment. This was a great episode. Rick, you're the man!

Brian + Rick is a match made in heaven! These dudes would fit in perfectly with my group of friends. Just a big bunch of awkward nerds, passionate about our hobbies! Prof is so likeable! Great ep! Rick Glassman should be on Shuffle Up and Play!!!!

This made me so happy Rick! Please follow your instincts and create MTG content you beautiful bastard. The Professor has real improv chops, and this has made me consider the similarities between teachers and stand up comedians. Why is nobody talking about this?

I’ve loved the professor for many years. I only recently discovered Rick in a completely unrelated way through comedy. To see these two together and chatting and enjoying each other’s company makes me feel warm and fuzzy even two years after the fact. ❤️❤️❤️

This is the first I'm ever seeing of TYSO (I'm a magic person so the algo threw me this way because of the Prof I'm assuming). It's so cool to see that this was a few years ago and Rick is talking about being at 50k and I look now and he is over 400k, and then the Prof talking about being at 600k when he just became the first Magic The Gathering TH-camr to get that next plaque hitting 1 Mil.
Half way in and loving this talk, loving the work that gets put into the edit, loving the energy and learning a new side of someone I've watched for years (the Professor), and I'm excited to watch more of these episodes!

Rick, hats off to you for keeping things real and explaining the negative self talk.
I’m someone who makes the self deprecating jokes all the time so I can relate and I really enjoy you telling him that it can be a character trait people might not enjoy.

I'd never heard of this podcast before, came here for the Prof, but there's something so endearing about the comfort and intimacy these two have and so much of it is Rick being such a no-bullshit host.
Thanks for the wonderful interview, will almost certainly check out other episodes.

Deleted my comment because I wanted to watch a little more before I really had an opinion. I sent this to my brother, he works at a magic shop (here in Ohio Rick😎) and I’m around it but not too knowledgeable about it.
With that being said, I think your returning audience gets you. We know what to expect (or should I say not expect) from you and I think a lot of us love the change of pace. Your podcast is one I enjoy week after week no fail no matter the guest. I have a special place in my heart for the football ones being a browns fan. I do love when your dad and uncles are on, too.
One last thing I love seeing the vulnerable side you’ve been showing on here lately. It has been a nice change of pace from my other podcasts. I know you are always showing a more raw side of podcasts and it is weirdly comforting to some of us. Lol.
