This was written as a love song from Neil to his wife Sharon.

Beggars belief why it wasn’t a worldwide hit. Especially in the US.
    Thanks for this!!

I hear this song alot on the radio here in Sydney still. I don't know why it isn't a worldwide hit tbh.

So glad to hear you know I Got You :)
Australia adored that song when it came out.
Their True Colours album was a firestorm.
I think Message to My Girl is one of the most perfect magical songs there is.
It has a certain melancholy about it that just hits you in the heart.
    It's irresistible
    and it hurts
    but it's beautiful.
Split Enz has so many classics like that
because they were a brilliant bunch of talented artists!
    Fken geniuses in my opinion.
And I love Tim and Neil like brothers.
It almost Anzacian, with all respect meant.

Glad you enjoyed this! It’s perhaps my favorite of all time by any band. I like how you pointed out the crescendo at the end, with soaring guitar and Tim’s backing vocals, reflects Neil’s courage and triumph of getting his girl, Sharon. Until now, I just thought the two most distinctive things other than Neil’s passionate singing was Eddie Rayner’s keyboards and guest drummer Ricky Fataar’s unique drumming.

Tim Finn his brother who is one of the founding members of Split enz, also joined crowded house on the album woodface. They did a lot of solo stuff together under the name the Finn brothers.

I like this band a lot, used to have their LP "True Colours" which had laser -etched symbols on the vinyl. I was stationed in England for 3 years at the beginning of the '80s, remember hearing them perform a live concert on the radio. 'One Step Ahead' was another hit for them.

The Enz were formed in about 1973 by Tim Finn Neil's brother while at university.
Neil dreamed of becoming a member of Enz while growing which subsequently happened.
Ens & the Finns are a part of our NZ fabric.

A few of us got it on the other side of the pond. I believe only 'I Got You' was a 'hit' here In the states, but I had long since realized that 'hits' wasn't where it's at. Loved Split Enz, and yes they were transitioning to Crowded House by this time. Thanks for uploading.

I think the song is more about him giving up his bravado and admitting he loves this girl. Incredibly avoiding actually saying what it is he wants to say to her only saying its time to say the thing that is long overdue

The first band I fell in love with and one of my favourite songs of theirs. Well Crowded House had Neil Finn and Paul Hester from Split Enz and Nick Seymour who was the brother of Mark Seymour of Hunters and Collectors fame. And later Neil's brother Tim and Eddie Raynor also of Split Enz joined Crowded House around the time of Woodface! Tim Finn started Split Enz and Neil joined later. Then the reverse for Crowded House!

  • @alphaomega7191
    @alphaomega7191 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh with Crowded House and ex Split Enz members - Neil Finn and Drummer Paul Hester were two of the core Crowded House members. Keyboardist Eddie Rayner worked on the first album and was invited to join but had family commitments. Later on from 1991 Neil's brother Tim joined.

To answer the question about which Split Enz members went to Crowded House (which of course Neil Finn put together):
Drummer and percussionist Paul Hester joined Split Enz for their last studio album See Ya Round, then went into Crowded House. Eddie Rayner worked extensively with Crowded House without officially joining them. And Neil's older brother Tim joined Crowded House only for the 1991 album Woodface.

if you look at the band at the end of the video, you will notice 2 drummers. Paul Hester had joined Split Enz by then, and along with Neil Finn went on to form Crowded House(with Nick Seymour) after Split Enz had...split. You could say that Crowded House was Split Enz version 2

With Niel Finn and Paul Hester moving to crowded House , Tim Finn went solo, Noel crombie ,Nigel griggs formed schnell fenster with ex split enz Phil Judd.

I like the comment how you said at the end of when one band breaks up they merge into another. There was an Australian band known as The Cockroaches who werent very popular, they they sort of "split up" without doing so and reformed as the Children's band known as The Wiggles and became way more famous amongst children and their parents world wide 😊

It was interesting seeing your face change, at the start poker faced and unsure and as you listened and "got" the song your face slowly took on a "mona losa" smile.

@@zoeherriot your so right , I play bass and an intrigued at the way these bass lines are thought out , split enz and crowded house are just amazing . I think enz morphed into crowded house ? That may explain the brilliance

    • @zoeherriot
      @zoeherriot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@peterhayden7136 Yeah, that's right. There was a definite evolution. Neil Finn joined Split Enz after it had already been established as a band (his brother Tim formed the band in 1973 - Neil would join in 1977), and he heavily influenced their song writing, to be more accessible. He actually wrote their first international hit - I got you.
By the time Conflicting Emotions came out (with Message To My Girl on it) - the band had very much become led by Neil. Paul Hester joined on this album and later became Crowded Houses drummer. So when Enz disolved, Neil and Paul formed crowded house with Nick Seymour (who is also an amazing bass player). Tim Finn would come back and join the band on a few albums and help out here and there. Neil Finn really has been able to create some music that will stand the test of time.

Great video! Another Split Enz song "Dirty Creatures" was based on Tim Finn's panic attacks at the time. The word "Taniwha" is mentioned in the lyrics. Which is the Maori word for "monster".
