It was rare when i felt an actual sense of accomplishment after beating a game ... THIS game was definitely one of those times. I was like 10 or so, and after I finally beat the last boss I remember jumping up and saying, "Fuck Yeah!" and then my mom kicked my ass for cursing ... but my feelings of grandeur softened the blows hehe Yes, this game is soo under rated in my opinion. Now a days, my nephew is 13, he thinks he is the game master, but ill call him out and challenge to this game and others that drove me nuts and usually he shuts his pie hole.
I used to swear so loud at these NES games when my parents left me alone that my neighbor started a rumour that I would scream and call my mother a w**re. When it finally got back to her, she went to his door and confronted him. He insisted he heard what he heard, and that's when I had to tell my mom about my nerd rage when no one else was home.
Yes there's an item or "power-up" that boosts your weapons, both Main and Sub-weapons get enhanced to maximum level/power. #6 on Max just cleans the screen without a projectile.
This game had an A.I. for difficulty. It adjusted the difficulty depending on how many shots you fired, enemies defeated, and the enemy spy ship that periodically shows up on the side of the screen
Game's difficulty level is INSANE! Pitty it was over-hard, could have become a popular game. Im surprized at how long it is, maybe they were hoping hardcore gamers would play it out like competitive Donkey Kong?
Yahoo! Awesome game play, seriously! Something that I know i can no longer achieve due to my bad eyes.. cant see the bullets anymore, kind of color blind as it blends in with the background.
This guy made this game seem like a cakewalk. One of the few Nes games that I never beat. Was waaaaaaay to difficult. Gamers nowadays are spoiled. This game made me trash a controller or two lol. That Clever COMPILE plug that they threw in there @ 24:10 though lol.
Level 4 is an absolute nightmare. I agree that this is one of the hardest on the NES. You need to have perfect reflexes and an innate understanding of the game mechanics, and there's still a good chance you'll fail because the projectiles box you into the corner.
@@linkinparkrulz2275 You can beat it with no skill, all it really takes is to get & keep the max level weapon 7 till the end of the stage. Which is easier said than done, of course, but I did it on my 1st try haha. Too bad I lost it at level 6.
Wow, so many sfx straight from my favorite NES game, The Guardian Legend. Amazing soundtrack, too. I'm guessing this was TGL's predecessor. Definitely going to have to pick this one up.
I remember playing this classic game for the first time back in 1989. I spent countless joyful hours in front of my TV playing it. Space Megaforce borrowed many elements from Zanac. Compile rules!!!
I've always loved this game. I've always been a weapon 3 fan, but I'm going to try to diversify a bit the next time I play, particularly by using the weapon 5 laser and the crowd favorite weapon 7. On levels where there's an icon on the ground while you're fighting the boss, concentrate your fire on it because you can actually destroy it for a free extra life.
Fantastic game with great music and well balanced chaos! Serious ptsd, tho. Just watching makes my legs jump and twitch! 😂 That 'Congratulations!' ending woulda made me rage, btw.
The fairies are hidden in some stages. If they are blue, touching them destroys all enemies. If they are red, if you reach a boss, the fairies will destroys it.
I'm usually a guy who likes the 7 Power-Up in my game, up until Area 8 when I can go for the 5 and then use the Lasers to really do a number on these bad guys. But, using the 6? That looked so dull to me, but this playthrough definitely opened my eyes. That's impressive!
The one thing I know, and for some reason remember, about this game is a tip in Nintendo Power: If you straight-up ram the middle of the first three pyramids in the beginning of the game, you're supposed to get a triple shot.
I remember i played this game on a old FC and i was really impressed that amazing game it made on a Nintendo FC, my fav weapon is the number "0" Also if you pick Ten times the number 0 you can destroy all kinds bullets from the enemies.
I could never understand the concept of the 6 powerup as seen here. I mean yes, it's just a bomb that clears the screen and I understand that, but it just didn't appeal to me. For me when I play this game, I stick with the 7s at first, up until the later stages when I go for the 5 (which leads to the laser). Regardless, great playthrough of an absolutely astounding game
Wow, this game had an ending? I always assumed it was infinite and algorithmically generated. Given how many hours I spent playing this... I'd have thought that if you stuck with it long enough to beat it, that Centauri would come in a spaceship and take you to be a Starfighter or something. :-/ Nope. Apparently you get... an animated fairy (making a cameo after a rise to fame from Legend of Zelda), and the consolation prize of being declared "The Messiah of the Earth". Le sigh.
Have you ever noticed the english error by the font that instead of "AREA #" is displayed "ARER #"?That "R" isn't an "A" special font,Compile simply left like that
Love this game! Could never get that far into it, but still had a blast playing it! BTW... Anyone else notice they misspell "Area" as Arer" at the start of each area?
Hi. I am looking for a game similar to this one (I don't know the name). A game I used to play 25 years ago as a little kid, can't find it in any list of 'best vertical scrolling arcade games/ space games' or whatever. I searched though a list of Nintendo games on Wikipedia, but no success. I remember I could collect various weapons, one of them was two rows of heavy black balls, which also gave you black orbiting balls around the shuttle... There was a boss at the end of each level. The third boss looked like a spider and the sixth boss looked like a frog... Any ideas?
"...or region specific ones, like Over Horizon, Twinbee, Gradius 2 and Recca." Twinbee and Gradius 2 never left Japan either. Funny how things work, too - Recca got a reproduction U.S. cart, the others didn't.
Shoot em ups only? That's sort of hard, the NES did have many, but few of them were top-notch. Guardian Legend merges shooting sections with adventure sections. That one's pretty good. Then there's Gun Nac, which you already know, Star Force, Gradius, Life Force... or region specific ones, like Over Horizon, Twinbee, Gradius 2 and Recca. Only Japan got the best shooter in the library though - Crisis Force. It's MAGNIFICENT. Hope I helped you!
Crash into them. They'll disappear without destroying your ship. However, if you leave a bunch of them onscreen and circle around them to bunch them up, it pushes against the NES sprite limit and the other enemies are drastically limited in firepower. So it helps to keep them onscreen under control until you reach the boss. Then get rid of them to get a clear shot and end the level.
Rompastompa71, well, if you like this game, then I think that the same people that made this game also made an even better sequel to this game in 1991 for the same system called Gun-Nac.
Fairy acts as a screen clearer when collected. Once collected, it also automatically clears the next fortress. So sometimes it's better to save the fairy for later such as in ARER 6.
Is Gun Nac a sequel to this? I notice lots of similarities (made by same company, uses same power up system, the jingle when you get a free ship is the same, etc....)
Game desinded by? I remember the instruction manual for this game and it felt like it was desinded by Ross's pet chimp Marcel. And yes, that was on purpose.

I can see where Guardian Legend got its flying stages from. Definite reference to Zanac. It is almost exactly the same. Same sprites, and same music at times.
Youre excellent at the game, but sadly youre also a 6 fairy. Use 5 till it turns to laser. Thats the funnest way to play. Haha Im just playin. Good job. Felt like 1987 all over again.
why didn't you use the other ship because it can do all kinds of stuff? and I got so frustrated playing it over trying to beat the game until my brother would not stop humming the song and the first time I after he wouldn't stop I dragged it out of leave it alone then I beat it and destroyed the whole game because if you haven't then it's one of our failures in life. we all know anyone who wasn't born in the 80s would be holy crap this is way too much for them. but I did it and everything changed, because your expecting it's over when you beat the final boss 🤷🏼♂️ nope there's the underground Base that made my whole family say nope no way I could beat it and bam oh I destroyed that shit 😎 like a champ 🏆

One of my favorite games of all times. The level design was so underrated, as well as the music. They don't make shooters like this anymore
One of my earliest memories is watching my dad play this game..I was about 4 years old.. Rest Easy pops..
Same here. Except dads still kicking about albeit barely.
Man, the music puts me back to my past with this, and all my nephews playing this. This was the game for us for a bit. So tough, too.
This game completely blew my mind when it came out in 1986. Back then there was nothing even close to it.
No? Terra Cresta, Xevious, Star Force, Slap Fight.
This game was so kickass. My dad loved this game as a kid. Love this channel! Keep it going dudes!

Use to love this game. 😀 ❤
I love Compile! :D Space Megaforce is their best title!
So is Puyo Puyo.
it is the special attack for #6 when you have the ultimate normal attack thing

If you run into a box with the ball without shooting it you'll get full gun. Haven't seen any of the zanac videos doing it.

Too much risk for the reward I guess.

So I remember #6 being a projectile that has to hit something before it wipes screen.. What's up with it just auto-triggering?
how I hated those things at stage 8 they won't die from bullets and also you can't shoot past them.
Crash into them. They'll disappear without destroying your ship. The thing that pops up at 18:32 skips you to the next level iirc. Haven't played this in over 10 years.
I completed the game back in the day several times and each play was different but can't remember the score. Game was way before its time.
I thought i remembered reading somewhere years ago that the more you shot your weapon the harder it got. Anyone know anything about that?
I had this game as a kid, and this shit was impossible.
