This tiny 35x20 foot bar with 10 small tables & bar stools is where some of the best musicians in the world play to let loose (play loud) for over 25 years. Been there well over 100 times. I always bring earplugs. Or wet bathroom paper towel in my ears.
For all those who are here because of David Bowie: If you enjoy the music in the video above you should also check out: The albums "Perpetual Motion", "Casting for Gravitiy" and "Fast Future" by D. McCaslin. You might as well enjoy the music of musicians and groups such as David Binney, Mehliana (B. Mehldau and M. Guiliana (drummer in the video above), KNOWER, Mr. Barrington, Wayne Krantz and Chris Potter Underground.
+pharoah I am here because of that. I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of jazz in general (though there are artists I like), but this I do like. I will check out some of your recommondations :-)
Big fan of Wayne krantz, as well as mehliana! When I heard blackstar I didn't know guillana and lefebvre played in it but they have such a distinctive sound! To the fans of blackstar album I would highly recommend the album "krantz carlock lefebvre" as well as mehliana
Mark Guiliana has also recently released an amazing new album called "Jersey" with a beautiful cover of "Where Are We Now". Big fan of his own music and his various collaborations.
+jayrobb9 Try some John McLaughlin, also JM with Mahavishnu Orchestra, Chick Corea, Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, Weather Report and Jaco Pastorious solo, older Pat Metheny, Steps Ahead, Animal Logic - and that's just the "old mainstream" stuff I can see while glancing over at my CD collection. You are about to enter into a whole new world, young man. Also google "experimental jazz" or "exploratory jazz". Get ya wallet out.
... smokin' stuff! It was a brilliant idea of arranger Maria Schneider to let David Bowie check out this great bunch of guys at the 55 bar before recording his fantastic new album BLACKSTAR! - Rest in peace, Bowie
Seems like so long ago. Best times of my life seeing music in NYC was at these shows. Maybe I saw the 55 Bar shows six times or so? Not sure if Bowie was ever in there with me. Around the same time, I saw Maria Schneider at Birdland and he was there. Right after Black Star's release, I had tickets for McCaslin's group at Vanguard. They did a week there once a year for a while, never missed it. Anyway, Bowie passed shortly before the Vanguard shows. What a somber week. I think I saw a set every night. They did Small Plot of Land and Warszawa in addition to some Black Star and McCaslin tunes. Always wondered if Bowie would have sung a little at some of those sets if he'd been in good health. The timing seemed to make sense.
Hi Callum, Mark is using a 16" HHX Evolution O-Zone crash (you can tell by the hand hammering on the crash). He also uses a Sabian 20" Artisan Light ride in a brilliant finish, Sabian 10" chopper and mixes between a set of 14" Click hats (as in this video) and a set of 14" Legacy hats. Hope this helps
that was insane man!! i always wondered who played the drums for bowie on black star...mark is amazing!! so are the other guys but dude...those drums!!
Nathaniel Smith hi, thanks for the reply. but i doubt it's a zildjian, because mark is endorsed by Sabian. perhaps just like what martin cruz said (i don't understand spanish).

pharoah i
Every one of these guys is a total badass.
OK, I'm going to use that horrible phrase 'David Bowie brought me here', but I am so glad he did. The world needs more music like this!
+jayrobb9
yep... me too!
+jayrobb9 +1 on that!
+jayrobb9
I'm not ashamed to say that's why I'm here too.
They're awesome on Bowie's Blackstar and I'm lovin' this too!
+jayrobb9 Check out Mehliana "Taming the Dragon" lp which is right up there w/ the mood of Bowie's latest album.
These guys are monsters, both here and on Blackstar. Getting something this complex to groove is no joke.
I watched this like 20 times already
This is the best playing from Mark I've ever heard
This is my favourite live performance of anything ever.
David Bowie brought me here. You guys kick ass!

Have stood at the edge of that bathroom hallway watching shows so many times 😮.
Brilliant... superb drums and bass!... Saying that, all of it is!
Donny's album Casting For Gravity has this song, called "Stadium Jazz"--though NOTHING beats them live!
we want more!!!!
I can't stop listening to this.
It was probably NYC night outs like this when Bowie first clocked these guys. These dudes actually performed on a bona fide requiem masterpiece.
i strive to be as good a musician as these guys

Mark Giuliana is for real in the top 5 of the best drummer in the World.
This is the sort of thing I'd kill to hear and something my wife would die having to hear it.
This version is the best one I’ve heard

300 of those 300 times are because 04:30.
Wow
spaccato tutto
Man, Mark's fill at 4:29 is letting loose that shit man! Holy crap.
He read that whole thing perfectly and reacted to the crowd too. Utterly badass and generous as fuck.
The girl near crash cymbal is actually deaf
I emailed him and asked him if he's sponsored so that will guarantee either Sabian or something else, but I'll let you know for sure soon.
best part 2:58
That'll be Mike Clark, who's playing on Thrust I could never quite match..
Jamie Somerville front to back but especially Actual Proof.
Awesome!
She who could listen to Mark at the side is lucky.
anyone know what crash Mark's using by his Hats?
that was insane man!! i always wondered who played the drums for bowie on black star...mark is amazing!! so are the other guys but dude...those drums!!
I hear a lot of Bob Berg influence and it's fucking great!
4:30
What snare is that man, so phat
does anyone know by any chance what mark uses as his far right crash cymbal?
if I had to hazard a guess I'd say an 18" constantinople, and from the sound probably a light one.
Nathaniel Smith Sabes que me parece que usa Artisian de Sabian , es un sonido super ligero !
Nathaniel Smith hi, thanks for the reply. but i doubt it's a zildjian, because mark is endorsed by Sabian. perhaps just like what martin cruz said (i don't understand spanish).
Iwan Paul 18/20(?) Artisan crash or ride
Alessandro Lugari
thanks! yeah probably it's artisan crash.
Yeah! Homegirl in the white tee looks scared as hell! Donny reppin' Santa Cruz, CA!!!
Front right pair can't handle the last minute
What a great band !!
Wondering what kind of camera and mic(s) were used here. This is the sharpest and best sounding 55 Bar recording yet.
Nothing fancy--just a Canon S95. Most of the live music videos on my channel use it--good low light HD video for a point and shoot camera!
longlivelivemusic Thanks! The mic could handle the noise.
Sounds good, kick drum overloading though, right?
You can check out Casting For Gravity-Donny's new one with these dudes feat. this tune-at greenleafmusic (dot) com (slash) castingforgravity
it's an 18" Sabian HHX O-Zone
That girl's left ear is FOREVER @ 50% hearing loss now!
einfach nur super - Energie + Kreativität
All I can think of is RIP that poor woman's ears!
Stadium Jazz
please
Mark's phrasing is outer space knowledge...
want Mark's t shirt!
All I can say is WOW!
Well judging by the logo I'm about 80% sure its a Sabian AAX O-Zone crash. Could be HHX...
where is this song??
i want it!!
@4:30 Wow
Derek Trucks brought me here!!! (:
There's an upcoming album from Donny featuring this group. Check it on iTunes, I think there's a preview.
sometimes when you cover up your ears listening live music, it is like a volume balance. Maybe that girl really dig the set!
Name of this tune? anyone?
Adam
Incredible band, as I thought
holey moley
Three of them on Perpetual Motion and all of them on the upcoming release in two weeks.
wow that lick mark set up @ 4:37...he's killing it so nonchalantly

I don't understand how those people can just SIT there.....
Another Bowie fan checking out the band, And liking it in its own right.watch those levels guys,Just a touch of distortion, just saying.
what's the song?

In fact, I prefer David Binney to play saxophone, which will have more unpredictable lines
