MJ was not a great singer. He was a great entertainer. Elvis had the looks, charisma and was an original. No disrespect to MJ, however he could not sing in the same league as Elvis.

Michael created a set show, dance and theatrics very different... They came from very different eras... They deserve respect in their own right... Frank, you don't have to like MJs voice, not everybody likes lyric tenor. But calling him an awful singer is a wild strech. Just check how vocal sites describe his vocals, like critique of music or divadevotee. Or ppl who sing in the same vocal type but struggle to sing all his notes he sang in chestnote. The way he sang "Butterflies" - zero falsetto, purely chestnotes, is simply remarkable. And if you think about how he sang at the age of 10, I mean "Who's loving you" - that alone makes him an outstanding vocalist in the whole century.
Considering Elvis is completely out of his range near the Bs and Cs whilst MJ is in his comfort zone, its a testament to how incredible of a singer Elvis was. Definitely much more substance and technique in his vocals compared to MJ

Anyway, range does not make a great singer and I don't get the obsession and weight people put on it. Elvis voice has a lot more colour, substance and a certain technicality compared to MJ, that's why he was an incredible singer. Prince is technically a baritone yet he's certainly one of the best male vocalists ever.

Prince couldn't hit a C5 in chest voice (as I said he has a very 'average' range without his falsetto) but this doesn't limit him because he's a fantastic vocalist who knows how to use his voice. The same thing with Elvis. Elvis hits a C5 and higher in chest voice in this very video. The fact he's a baritone who is hitting those notes confidently and with great tone shows how gifted he is as a singer. MJ in comparison was terrible when he's out of his comfort zone.

Elvis was an amazing vocalist no doubt but this is very biased against Michael. You play a half second of MJ hitting a note and then play like 30 seconds of Elvis. Ergo not very fair. In my opinion even though I love Elvis, I give the slight advantage to Michael. His voice was more versatile. Anyone who think MJ didn't have a great range, go listen to his vocal warm up that he did on the phone with his vocal coach... Incredible!

You can have your opinion, but it cam actually be measured, objectively, as I did. I have written on this extensively and Jackson was basically a falsetto/tenor while Presley was all at once able to sing falsetto, referred to as a tenor at times, but mostly a lyrical baritone, and could also sing base, certainly something Jackson could never do. Moreover, he hit open full throttled Cs that made opera singers envious. Absolutely astonishing. Watch Presley sing Hurt, live, while also, it is hard to find Jackson singing live, and when you do, he is no where near as good as when in the studio. Jackson would have ripped his longs apart on Hurt and, I'm sorry - as I have taught music - he just did not have the same and full range. Certainly a wonderful voice, but the only person who really comes close to Elvis is Freddy Mercury, and even Mercury, I have found, did not have Presley's mastery with a love ballad or sing as many different genres so well. Placido Domingo himself said it: Presley's voice is the only voice I envy. I agree, however, that Jackson's voice is sometimes overlooked. Best wishes!

I might add, too, a lot of the Elvis recordings are live while Jackson's are studio produced. And I've seen Jackson in concert, several times, and he never sounded as good in person as live. Elvis in '77, once, and HURT was amazing.

I can only imagine what is must have been or have felt like when Elvis raised the roof with Hurt, Unchained Melody etc....... The late 70's are the sad years for Elvis but vocally he had the powerhouse in his throat....from falsetto to bass, his voice was never wider in range, that's what I think.
