This is the video I've been searching for! I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, but I'm going to teach myself how to use a circular saw and attempt to build this roof for my "dog kennel turned chicken run". My kennel is 5'Wx10'Lx6'H. I have five 8'x24" corrugated panels and at least six of the 2x4's already. Just need the screws and brackets that you used. Thanks again for posting this!
We did the same thing & had to put a tarp over the whole roof last summer, it was so hot under that roof. The tarp, I think decreased the temp. almost by 5° to 6° F. We ended up bringing the pups in during the day time, luckily we have a mud room with a cement floor.
Glad to hear you were quickly keen to how hot the dogs were getting. Depending on geographic location and physical location of the kennel I can see how this could get hot. This particular kennel is situated where it sees minimal direct sunlight due to the almost 360 degrees of surrounding trees as well as nearby house. I think your tarp idea is good quick fix for shade. Take care and appreciate your comments.
I live in an area with heavy snowfall - rough cut 2"x4" standing on edge, 2' centres, can't support the snow load on what sticks to 14ga wired with a 2"x 4" mesh - we had one kennel cave this year - I've used clear plastic roofing before on a porch roof and the sun, thankfully, destroyed it in under 2 years - thankfully because it was at least as hot under it as a green house - in the summer we spread tarps over the wire to provide shade for the dogs - ( kennel owner of a medium/large kennel for over 43 years
Really useful, many thanks. Was the roof naturally sloping? I couldn't tell in the video if you added a board to one side to make it slope. I built a more basic version over our wood shed years ago and now there's a fine garden of moss and weeds growing on top.
Looks pretty good. I recommend putting the screws at the top of the corrugated wave rather than in the gully where the rain flows. Not the manufacturer but that's what I've always done.
Love this idea. How far apart should the rafters be for a 26" sheets of roofing....in order to be able to drill into the rafters when applying the sheets. Or does it matter?
Well if I remember right I think I made it so the rafters sat so the sheeting on top would sit on center or close to it. So it would depend on the width of the roof sheeting you plan on using.
Thanks this is giving me some great ideas. I need to make a safe enclosure for my chiuahuas that us coyote and cougar proof. Just need to figure out how to manage temperature I am in the desert.
Can someone tell me what the wavy 2x4 looking planks are called? The ones the corrugated plastic is screwed onto? Inexperienced person here trying to put a roof on my chicken coop and this video is extremely helpful! This really looks like something I can feasibly do before chick season. Those boards are what I can't find the name too though.
Planning on doing this for my dog 10x10 in in massachusetts how is it holding on with snow we get some serious storms also any tips for 10x10 would greatly appreciated .
Holds up great with the snow. Still holding up as of today just fine. I’d sink as many fasteners in there as I could if wind were an issue. Best of luck to ya and thanks for sharing too.
This is great, thanks for sharing! I need this for my catio. We have eagles, hawks & coyotes so can't let our cats outside. I don't want to put a tarp over it because to the wind would ripe if apart.
Haha Catio. Love it. Yeah this should do the trick. Thanks for watching and taking the time for the feedback. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.
DIYTechnician Keep us updated because I live in Washington state. I need to make four of these. Looks like you live in my state from the trees I see in your video. Hugs
So im fixing something like this for my dogs aswell. To block winter wind i was thinking of putting up tarp halfway up all around. But idk if itll cause like a freezer effect.
Ooh good point and looks like you’re giving good thought to it. Personally don’t know how much this tarp technique could help or hurt. Seems like it’ could keep the wind down though.
I got it like that right now but not so good idea like last night it rain n the tarp it got sack of water I will do what this friend built in this video is the best way to go n not wasting a lot of money because he is already using the kennel as support the only thing I will put different is that he put the clear roof I will put something that it won’t just be protected from water but from the sun as well
Its held down to the fence with the “u” bolts screwed to the wood. Its also in a non-windy place compared to other parts of the world. If wind is an issue, i say put bricks down for weight
Theres some galvanized clamps with a semi circle on one side that screws to the wood while securing to the horizontals. I do show it in the video. I can give you the amazon link if you want. Thanks for watching!
Finally, a simple roof I can actually make for my animals! Thank you!
Awesome. Let me know how it turns out too if you would. :)
Thank you! Will do!

Great to hear it. Thanks for letting me know.
I grabbed the screws and fasteners from the hardware store

Nice! Yeah it had a little bit of a slope to it already. The clear top did get start to get discolored due to moss growth.

Thanks Alex! Appreciate you watching and chiming in.
Perfect video. Now I need to learn how to make a pitch since I’m on flat ground
Thank you Joel. Yeah good idea to keep the debris and maybe snow from collecting. Thanks for commenting and good luck to ya.
Won’t this make it hotter for them in the summer? Nice job though
Trigga holic nah the breeze flows through the chain link. Plus plenty of cold water. Thanks!!

Thank you so much for this video. Could you tell me how far you spaced the 2x4s?
I spaced them the same width as the sheets I was using. This way they can be secured to it along the seams.
Thanks this is giving me some great ideas. I need to make a safe enclosure for my chiuahuas that us coyote and cougar proof. Just need to figure out how to manage temperature I am in the desert.
Heck yes! I’m thinking lots of shade :) thanks for the feedback

Looks like they are called horizontal wood closure strips. I did a search for corrugated roof panels and that came up. Hope this helps.

Is the roof predator proof like mountain lions standing on it?
Love this & the bamboo on the sides of kennel
Thank you:)!!!
Did you have to pre-drill through the plastic or did you just screw straight in?
I drilled straight in

Nice job. How did it hold up with snow?
Hey thanks. Really good but honestly it wasn’t a really heavy snow year. Appreciate the feedback. Take care.
Dumb question but what are those brown or copper lookin things the panels sat in?
Not a dumb question at all….they call them round closure strips.
Do you think it can take on the snow load?
251manny were gonna find out. It should. I hope =)

Charlie's Chicks yup! Haha. I will keep u posted. Thanks for watching and your thoughts as well.
my next project before winter...
Justin Gill do it!
Hope it’s in shade because in the summer that’s gonna roast like a green house
Yes it’s mostly shaded. The chain link sides actually allows the air to move freely keeping it cooler.

Love it...what size boards
Thanks! I used 2x4s for the cross members for strength
Its me then 1x3s or 1x4s for the perimeter and middle.
@@DIYTechnician thank you! My weekend project
what's stopping it from blowing away
Its held down to the fence with the “u” bolts screwed to the wood. Its also in a non-windy place compared to other parts of the world. If wind is an issue, i say put bricks down for weight
what kind of nails did you use?
I used the rubber grommet type of nails
How did you mount the wood to the bars?
I used a semi circular pipe clamp that I could drill (screw) into the wood.
Where did you get those brown ridges
jeff h Lowes or Home Depot has them in the roofing section.
I'd paint it white to shield the dogs from the sun. Good job.
Great idea. Thanks!!
How much did the material run you?
A couple bucks
How is that secured to the galvanized steel?
Theres some galvanized clamps with a semi circle on one side that screws to the wood while securing to the horizontals. I do show it in the video. I can give you the amazon link if you want. Thanks for watching!
At the 3:30 mark in the vid it shows them
Woodglut has a very large project base.
What kind of do it yourself dog kennels are there?
@@DIYTechnician A lot of different plans with dog kennels are there
it really doesn't make any sense why it's clear
Good point. No reason other than letting light through.
