- The Railway Touring Company's "Dartmouth Express" had been postponed because of the sea wall damage at Dawlish but re-instated after the timely and much praised repairs carried out under the management of Network Rail. Substituting for a beleaguered 70000 Britannia, 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley cuts a dash as it speeds over the Exminster Marshes to Powderham, the only decent stretch of "A4 friendly" metal west of Exeter. A local Rugby Union match in progress at Queen's Park plus a strengthening wind from the sea provides the backdrop for the arrival for servicing at Paignton where the Easter holidaymakers are out in force to witness the activities. Not having much luck with the sun so far it was a real bonus that the late afternoon provided clear skies for the departure from Kingswear where 60007 makes as noisy a departure as I think I have ever heard from an A4, augmented by what seems like a leaking gland on the right cylinder!! Finally to Cockwood where the evening sun sparkles on that highly effective B.R. blue livery.
A wonderful collection of footage of Sir Nigel, Alan. One of my favorite stories of SNG comes from back in the early 1980’s, when a Class 25 had been sent to save a failed Class 47 and its ballast train, but wasn’t strong enough to pull both. SNG, who happened to be on a rail tour nearby, was sent to tow the entire sorry lot.
Man sir Nigel Gresley made some awesome engines. The A4 in my opinion is the most advanced steam locomotive ever built. And greetings from America
Forgot this was one of yours, Alan. This is a long-standing favourite of mine I think because 2 months previously I was wondering if this line would ever reopen after the sea wall collapse...But It Did! So thank you for producing this!
These Locomotives are amazing . They can do all of that work at that speed with one Fireman with a Shovel.
Knowing that SNG is returning to the mainline, this makes it even more beautiful
Hello David and thank you for your kind and uplifting comment. Best regards, Alan
Very nicely done. I appreciate your production values, putting the train into its setting while preserving an excellent railway video.
Hi and thank you so much for such positive feedback, I really appreciate it. Best regards, Alan
Magnificent sight and sound.
Hi and thank you for such a positive comment. Kind regards, Alan
I love how you see the steam whistle being blown ... and then hear it a couple of seconds later when the steam has visibly stopped.
As sound travels at 3 seconds per kilometer or roughly 5 seconds per mile at sea level Simon, you can work out how far away she is. Thank you for your valued input. Kind regards, Alan
Excellent shots. The clip at Exwell was brilliant . A fantastic location and superbly panned clip. (C&A)
Hi C&A and thank you for your kind comments. The Exminster Marshes is one of the few stretches down here where an A4 actually looks "at home" - on the straight and level! Alan
Love that Kingswear shot, with the excellent whistle too. Great stuff!
Hi and thank you for your kind remarks. It seemed to me that the valve events were beginning to get a little out-of-shape on leaving Kingswear and viewing clips later up the line, things seemed to have got steadily worse, so I guess there will be some setting-up to do back at base! Alan
What an extraordinary preservation job done on this fine machine! Great video too (of course!)
+Little Star (Zvyozdochka) Hi and thank you for your kind comments, the fact that fate (and a lot of time and effort) saved these wonderful machines from being recycled as so many razor blades is one of the wonders of modern life!! Alan
What an absolutely wonderful video. Real, British engineering at its very best!
Many thanks for your kind and much appreciated feedback. Best regards, Alan
Great video of a superb run. The climb out of Kingswear was very impressive from the second carriage from the front.
Hi Christopher and thank you for your kind and interesting comments. Although the "25" on the back was giving a push, it certainly sounded like 60007 was not going to take it easy and I am sure that that was quite a bit more than 25mph at the bottom of the bank! Alan
Superb show leaving Kingswear, and light was just right in the last shot.
Hi Andrei and thank you for your always welcome and kind comments. Best regards, Alan
Thanks for the vid,i was in Exeter on Saturday but could not get to watch the a4..Top drawer stuff as always.
Tony.
Hi Tony and thank you for the nice comment. Sorry you did not get to see the show but at least you can get a flavour of the day from all the postings on YT. Alan
Yep, really good shots Alan. Really like that long steady pan with the pull back at the end near the beginning of the vid. Hugh
Hi Hugh: thanks again for your kind and most welcome comments from "down under", always nice to hear from you. Alan
Thanks for posting.
My pleasure Stephen. Thank you for your kind and very much appreciated feedback. Best regards, Alan
Excellent! British engineering in the English countryside, what more could anyone ask!
I share your pleasure John, thank you for the nice comment. Best regards, Alan
Glorious video. I just bought this on Train Simulator 2019.... very cool thank you :-)
Hi and thank you for your kind feedback and have fun in the virtual world! Best regards, Alan
Like to thank you for sharing your video, I like the Exwell Hill scene the best really show the A4 at best. I manage a few photos at Dawlish. Twas a great day out even if it is a far cry from when I watch pound the East Coast. Thank You, Ross
Hello Ross and thank you for your kind remarks, glad you got some shots for yourself on "foreign" territory. Alan
Just found this one Alan !! Great Footage and Excellent Audio .The A4s are my favorite loco Thank you Again Regards Tony from Australia
Glad you found it Tony and thank you for such nice feedback. Kind regards, Alan
I've seen Sir Nigel twice; on the Severn Valley Railway and the North Yorkshire Moorland Railway. But here, seeing one of only six remaining 'Streaks' flying by at a good speed, THIS is how to honour a legacy of legends.
Hi and thank you for your interesting and much valued comments. Kind regards, Alan
Cracking video ! Fine coverage of SNG'S best performance to date !
Hi and thank you for the kind remarks, apart from the slight valve issue she certainly looked like she was being worked hard and going well. Alan
Real Engineering, well done the Brigade for supplying the bowser.
Amen to your profound comments Paul. Regards, Alan
Superb filming, Alan; many thanks from a new subscriber!
Ian
Hello Ian and thank you very much for your kind comments. Thanks also for your subscription, welcome aboard! Alan
Extremely good video, very professionally done, the shots well thought out .
In my opinion one of the best looking locos ever built, I dont know why it works but some how by freak of nature or accident the streamline Gresley loco just did.
The great thing about the Gresley 3 cyclinder locos was the sound, alway reminds me of a racehorse as it starts to cznter when it gets underway.
Tty he A4 and the V2s seemed to really accentuate it
Hello Steve and thank you for your kind and interesting remarks. Although I am a GWR man at heart I have to agree with all your sentiments about A4's. Best regards, Alan
Well I can understand your love of GWR, you have to love castles and also the humble 57XX.
I now.live in Sydney but got to see Pendennis at didcot last year.
I used to chase the 57xx round on the LT, im planning on building one in O gauge.
I do have a bachmann one in LT colours.
Of course whenit came to loco colours what a legacy the Western left BR with its loco green
Gresley was an artist above being an engineer. Take a look at a V2's valve gear and cylinders square on. Walschaert's valve gear and motion was used the world over, but on the V2s I think Gresley produced something that would grace an art gallery, no just a steam loco...
That panning shot....wow! Amazing work!!!!
Hi and thank you for your kind and much appreciated comment. Best regards, Alan
Excellent. Exwell Hill and a good Rugby Try.
Hi and thank you for the nice comment. Best regards, Alan
Stunning & Fascinating!
Hi and thank you for your kind and much appreciated feedback. Best regards, Alan
great video, you where lucky the tide was out,its allways in when i go there
Hi Chris and thank you for the kind comment. Funny but I actually prefer the tide to be in in order to get a reflection and it always seems to be out when I go there! Best wishes, Alan
Beatynicevideo
Great footage! Send us our loco back! (NYMR)
Hi and thank you for the kind and amusing comments. Thank you for lending us No.7, it was a rare pleasure to see her all the way down here! Alan
good video,, love it
Supergenialvideo
Great video even if I have come to it nearly 4 years after the event!
Fabulous scenery and excellent camera work and from which I've just spent 20 mins trying to plot your locations. - I've no idea why as I'm not likely to be visiting Devon any time soon!
I'm also trying to work out where / how the loco was turned?
Hello Mike and thank you for your kind remarks. I also like to find locations on Google, just so that I know where a shot is taken. As for turning, see Bittern being turned at Churston here: th-cam.com/video/-EVk85fs5tM/w-d-xo.html from 6:32. Best regards, Alan
Brilliant, thanks for that. Having subbed, I now have X hours lined up looking through your videos :-).
Off the back of this I also started looking up the (old) Devon and Cornwall railways. I'd forgotten about the Tamar valley route which would be great to travel on
Cheers Mike, thank you for your subscription. Welcome aboard! and happy viewing. Alan
I think a bit of tinkering is needed with Valves too..! Saw 46233 yesterday..that needs more than tinkering..Failed on return..!
were does 60007 live ? only seen the thing in overhaul at York never in full as in videos
That part at 07:14......
Where about's was that if you don't mind my asking?? Looks like a place to get some awesome shots of the steam engines. I'd like to use that area for a couple steam engines coming down this season, Sir Nigel Gresley being one of them
Hello Richard: the location is the slipway to the Dartmouth Higher Ferry on Bridge Road (A379). If you go by car you will need to park about 200m back up the road around the corner, just above the entrance to the private road. See Google street view. Alan
Does anyone know why the exhaust beat sounded different after she had been re coal and watered
If u listen there is a heavier and slower chuffing thats similar as to when thay first start over the much faster beats
London North Eastern Railway,
Love Never Ends Really.
Look Now, Easter Reigns.
A few funny titles I think suit the initials LNER to perfection. Hope you like my crazy ideas.
60007 Sir Nigel Gresley on tour in south Devon, a stop with a fire water tanker and coal merchant. North Yorkshire moors railway's lovely blue A4 out with the touring WCT train
It's got a miss timed vale setting or a leaking piston gland?
Is that what that odd beat was at the end sounded like a slower and heavier chuffing thanks rhat was doing my head trying to work if it was just me lol
very good
I appreciate your kind comment Ravi. Best regards, Alan
Currently at York being restored

Flying Scotsman Yes, indeed!

The Gresley 4-chimed whistle.
Best thing to come out of America honestly.
What kind of fuel does it use?
The fuel used is lump coal which has to be imported as the remaining open cast coalmines in the U.K. only produce powder coal for power stations. Regards, Alan
Is this called 'mallard' steam locomotive?
Hi and thank you for your question. The locomotive in the video is the same "Class" as Mallard. Mallard is a static exhibit in the National Railway Museum at York, U.K. see this link: www.railwaymuseum.org.uk/whats-on/mallard-worlds-fastest-steam-locomotive Kind regards, Alan
Was that a 25 hanging on for dear life?
Hi Steven and thank you for your fun question. That was the "local" class 25 as A4's and unrebuilt S.R. pacifics often have adhesion problems hauling more than 10 up to Churston, especially on the "down" leg. Kind regards, Alan P.S. the 25 has now been replaced by a 37.
More fuel in the fire & see how fast it will go
Nicely filmed - but I am now sick of seeing these national treasures gobbed-over with the wretched BR scheme.
Hi and thank you for the nice feedback. Luckily it is just a coat of paint to keep the supporters of the locomotive happy who are now having to find £750,000 for her overhaul. It will be interesting to see what decal she carries on her return to steam. Best regards, Alan
Nice clear video. But it would have been much better had you panned the camera and followed the locomotive around. But we’ll done. Maybe next time.
Hello Richard and thank you for your valued comment and critique with which I entirely agree. The desired pan was out of the question this time as disembarking passengers and vehicles from an unfortunately timed ferry arrival totally blocked my view. I had therefore to quickly unplug the remote microphone, re-position the tripod and level the camera whilst continuing filming, the result is therefore what was acceptable after editing out the rather "avant garde" footage in between! As you say, maybe next time I will be a little luckier as I was here th-cam.com/video/YF69-pWDGQ4/w-d-xo.html where the ferry is leaving and there are no passengers or vehicles on the slipway. Best regards, Alan
Needs her valences.
Just scrumming around for a reasonable train video.........Nice try! (ha!)
Greatvideo
America was trying to show that America has better freight, well... they did! no engine can haul as much as Big Boy and the Challenger.
We dont need to haul that much freight in the uk though, we're only a small country.
Their locos are like their cars built for straight line hauls that don't take curves too well !
What is it with British Steam engines having those ugly high pitched whistles? They sound like they are little children engines. What British steam engines need, are some good ol' fashion deep manly steam whistles. Like the Southern Pacific GS4 class whistle.
not all that shout the loudest are the best
The world's a varied and interesting place. Plenty of room for both.
Can I butt in on that? I absolutely agree with that statement! And plenty of room for the LMS and the Southern and even BR Standards! Dare I say MODERN TRACTION??? (SHOCK HORROR)
