With Tokyo recently being announced as the host of the 2020 Olympics we look back the last time the Games graced the Japanese capital in the first part of our new series of Olympic History.
Focusing on the build up and preparation to the Games along with the Opening Ceremony we look at the Olympic effect on the capital city and how the world prepared for the 1964 Olympic Games.

当時、私は、15歳吹奏楽でトランペットを担当していたので、島根県松江市の県庁バルコニーでファンファーレを吹き、兄は18歳で、聖火リレーの伴走をつとめました。考えると今から56年前になります。あの時の感動、未だに忘れる事はありません‼️

この東京五輪の聖火台を作ったのが、埼玉県川口市の鋳物職人の父子だと知らない人が多いだろう。熟練した鋳物職人の父は、完成間近にして、炉が爆発して病床に臥せって、数日後に亡くなった。その遺志を継いだ息子が完成させて、その後のメンテも行っている。競技場の解体は残念だったが、聖火台だけでも歴史遺産として大切に保管してほしい。
この頃私は２９歳まだ独身、二輪の雷族、開会式は街頭のカラ―TVで見た。
自衛隊吹奏楽団の演奏する開会式のファンファレーが印象的だった。
出来たばかりの首都高速道路を新宿から羽田まで２０分で走った。
自分の好きな職業に従事していて将来に対しては自信満々…しかし５０年後まで続けて
いようとは・・・・考えてもいなかった。
今、開会式の君が代を聴きながら書いている。
今まで元気でいられた幸せをかみしめてながら。
私の人生を彩ってくれた皆に感謝する・・・・
導いてくれた先輩のほとんどはすでに黄泉の世界に・・・
私はあと少しこちらで頑張る。、
吉川さん、とてもいい思い出話、ありがとうございます。
私は40歳でまだ、この時には生まれてませんでしたので、とても興味深く観てました。
激動の昭和にあって、高度経済成長を作り、支えてくださった大先輩に感謝をしつつ、7年後の東京オリンピックも大成功できるように国民一丸となってがんばりたいです。
自分の役割が終わったって考えると、悲しくなっちゃうな 泣
閉会式は全世界のアスリートが整列せずぐっちゃぐちゃに混ざって入場したって話が本当に感動
東京オリンピック。開会式の各国の誇りを背負った一糸乱れぬ行進も好きだが、閉会式での人種、国、性別に関わらず皆が入り交じりながら、笑い合いながら行進する姿が好きだ。今でこそ恒例の光景となっているが、実は東京五輪で初めて、しかもプログラムには無い、選手たちが独自に行ったことだというから驚きだ。
開会式の行進や敬礼は国家元首である天皇陛下に敬意を示しているらしい。東京2020では変わったなぁ。

Seeing the sides of Germany united, and the USA and Soviet Union walking one behind the other in a year like 1964. Truly historic.

I dunno but this feels very iconic, historic, sincere, formal, nostalgic.. i have goosebumps..the countries at that time was still in the middle of developing peace. Yet this olympic games somehow showed that we are one specie one world after all..sports really unite👏👏
東京五輪の前年に、地方都市に住んでいた。知人に東京観光に連れて行ってもらった。首都高速の長いトンネルを車で案内されて、急速な近代化に度肝を抜かれた思い出がある。

ハトが飛んでいった先を目で追うと、雲一つない青空に、航空自衛隊ブルーインパルスの描いた綺麗な五輪の輪。リハーサルではうまくいかなかったと聞きました。開始時間をはかり、絶妙のタイミングでGPSや高性能レーダなどない時代、目視を使って本番で成功させたそうです。
The Olympic Symbol Mark (five rings) drawn in the sky is amazing, considering the airplanes at that time had no GPS or high quality radar.

東京、札幌、長野の三大会全部でブルーインパルスの飛行展示あったけど、2020年の東京大会では無さそう。なぜなら午後８時から開会式やるらしいから。何とかしてやってほしいけどね。

Japan became a democracy, a new constitution was made etc. After that, Japan had an economic miracle and became a world superpower when Japan started making stuff such as electronics and cars

My mom was there in Tokyo, 1964. She still remembers that Olympics vividly and what a landmark event it was for the postwar generation of Japanese.

What I'm saying is that NBC is actively preventing other streaming services from having access to the recording/broadcast of the opening ceremony. It's not that I can't view it on another streaming service because I'm in America. It's because there are no other streaming services that have that broadcast.
Too late now, but we watched the local NBC broadcast on our TV with an antenna.

一糸乱れぬ行進に、無駄の無いシンプルな演出は今見ても十分カッコよさを感じますし、何より全体から漂う緊張感。これこそが本当のオリンピックの開会式というものです。正直言って2020年版とは全く比べ物になりません。
ゲーム音楽での入場やお遊戯会の様なパフォーマンスをしなくても、きちんとした開会式は出来るという事。
1964年版東京オリンピックの開会式こそ、歴史に残る傑作です。

安倍マリオもワクワクしましたが、この動画を見ていたら、自然に涙が流れてきました。アメリカチームにアフリカ系は少ないですし、2021年の方が世界は良くなっているに違いありませんが、60年弱の間に、何かシンプルで大切なものを、失ってしまったような気がしました。

貴重な記録ですね。ギリシャからの聖火リレー、当時の風景、群衆、入場行進、聖火点火見入ってしまいました。聖火最終ランナーの方は、1945年8月6日に広島県で生まれたそうです。旧国立競技場のモザイクの神様と女神様の壁画、聖火台、好きでした。
１９６４年 オリンピック 今 拝見できまして 大感激で涙が止まらないです。１９６４年オリンピックのすべてに 感謝を込めまして ありがとうございました。

1964 is the Olympic Games debut for MALAYSIA as well as MALAYSIA at that time are the country formed in 1963 and composed with 4 other countries and territory... The Federation of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore... This is the only appearance of Malaysia with Singaporean athlete before Singapore got expelled from Malaysia in 1965...

Great. Very interesting. Love Japan and I remember the ‘64 games on telly - mostly the song “Good Morning Tokyo” which is lovely. Check out around 17.17 on the tape, USA; a young girl turns round and says, “Shut up!” to the girl behind her. Funny. I wonder if she can remember what that was about?!

Although this is footage is from the official1964 Summer Olympics film "Tokyo Olympiad", it I k the commentary during the athletes' parade was taken from NBC's telecast, since the commentator sounds a lot like Jim Simpson, who was one of the commentators NBC sent to Tokyo.
Although NBC carried the opening ceremony live by satellite and in color, it's my understanding no color footage of NBC's telecast e,usts; only a black-and-white kinescope recording.

I live and grew up in the same town where this main stadium is, so this is just amazing for me. It feels like I get to re-live history. Just wow !

JFK assassination was Nov 22, 1963
Gulf of Tonkin incident which led to the Vietnam war was Aug 2, 1964
So 1964 was during the height of the cold war, 20 years after WW2
