Metal Detecting Hack: How To Ground Balance A Garrett Pro Pointer

  • In this short video I show how to ground balance a pin pointer. If you have experienced a Garrett Pro-Pointer, or perhaps any pin pointer, that gives false signals in highly mineralized ground, this is the answer to your problems.

Thank you for this short tutorial. I had no idea that you could ground balance a pinpointer! I figured it was just something you had to deal with from time to time and solved it by scaling the sensitivity down. Level 4 on the Makro pointer was almost useless. Thank you! As always, great info.

OMFG YOU SAVED ME FROM A WORLD OF HUMILIATION. Went out detecting today and carrot was going crazy but when i would put it on wood fine back towardsw dirt went absolutely nuts. I thought I had broken it maybe and was about to send it off to get repaired but not I know to ground balance it and I can then use it as normal. I have always had issues at that park but today especially it was impossible to use my pin pointer. Thanks for the tip you really saved my butt thanks!!!!

Mine leaked after first major submersion in running creek. Wouldn't stop sounding off even after drying out. Even after turning on with metal touching end, like what you do here. It lost sensitivity and when it does sound off on target it won't stop even after moving it away. I'll turn off, and when I turn on it still beeps. Testing battery will be next but what can I do about waterproof failure except return it??

You cleared up my question on what happens after you ground balance the pointer, when you put it next to the bullet and it went off. Other sites did not show that. I thought you had to go through another step to make it sensitive in order to make it buzz again. Thanks.

That's cool, and sooo easy! Glad for the demo, because I did not know what you meant when you mentioned ground balancing on occasion before.
I have to say you gave me a chuckle though. I misheard Garrett as Carrot. And given the shape & colour... It made me laugh. (It may seem funnier to me right now due to strong painkillers.)

Great tip Beau (or whoever you are, ya' clean shaven imposter! ) I've got to do this regularily on the banks of the Fraser river. Were near the mouth where the water is brackish, so any clay or sand will trip it out, or any that sticks to the pointer, as you're scanning around the hole... it just goes crazy even lifting it out of it. I'll click it on and off, and it runs fine....at least till more stuff collects on it, then I either click it on and off again, or wipe it off.
