  • On November 29, 1978, The Cars continued promoting their debut album in Europe by scooting on over to Bremen, Germany, where they performed for the German television program, Musikladen. The concert was aired on June 7, 1979, and later released on DVD by Rhino Records on October 24, 2000 (just three weeks after Benjamin’s death).
**The first song, "Good Times Roll," has been trimmed out by TH-cam for copyright reasons. I suspect this is because Rhino has uploaded that performance as the official live video for that song. It can be viewed here: • The Cars - Good Times ...

Me, just discovered them on Spotify sometime around November, December of last year. I'd heard "You Might Think" and "Drive" in movies and TV for years but never actually knew who they were. Now they're my favorite band, lol. Just wish I'd been born earlier so I could've followed em while Ben and Ric were still alive (I was born the year before Ben died)

@@xxrocketshark216xx4 So glad you found them! I bought their first album on cassette when it was just three years old and I was in 7th grade. Bought Heartbeat City several years later when it was brand new. They are the soundtrack of my teens. First kiss, first driving a car, first fistfight, first job, and first time falling in love. Some of the best songwriters and musicians in pop and rock history. As far as I'm concerned, they still set the standard for popular music. Enjoy their brilliance and fun.

Some critics said the Cars had no energy because they always played the songs the same way, but frankly, I always thought of that as a positive. They were true artists who composed the songs the way they wanted them, and when they played them... that's how they were. I love that.

I wish we could travel back in time. The late 70's (and early 90's imo ) music were the best times for me. I'm just lucky they recorded some of these on video. One thing I really like about this recording is that the director either attended (and paid attention to) rehearsal, or just was more on-the-ball than other directors of The Cars’ early live performances. He was able to follow the right action; Elliot’s solos, highlighting Greg at the right moments, David’s fills, etc. So many other recordings like this totally miss crucial moments of interest.

I'm finding that knowing the notes of the fretboard like the back of your hand, is key. Battle -Ends - And - Down -Goes - Charlie's - Father.. Did everyone notice that Elliot is doing finger tapping during his solo in Night Spots. It's at the 6:06 mark. This video was made in 1979, only a year after Van Halen's first album came out. Eddie Van Halen is seen as the father of the tapping technique but Elliot was doing it very early on. Elliot is not known as a shredder. He's greatly respected for his inventive, well crafted, melodic solos that perfectly fit each song. But make no mistake, Elliot was a highly technically capable player who studied at Berkelee in Boston. He's amazing.

A lot of bands evolve (led Zeppelin, The Beatles, David Bowie, even Van Halen added keyboard and added Sammy Hagar) and it is sometimes called growth and adaptation ;p
As for The Cars, back in the day I was thrilled about there mid 80s metamorphosis although I didn't give them the chance they deserved. My loss :( because of You Tube, I saw the Hall of Fame induction ceremony and to say the least, I'm kind of hopeless over each one of them! Especially Benjamin! Now that I have been educated.. Each song is strong and can stand solo! I just had another a-ha moment... They ve managed to sneak a variety of genre fusions, "Everything You Say" really showcases Ben's vocals.. I guess.. what song doesn't ? But.. "Everything You Say" has a Johnny Cash vibe !

His tone, technique & contributions to songwriting really encapsulated the bridge between 50s & 60s Rock'n'Roll, 70s 'Arena Rock', and late 70s New Wave. It takes a ton of talent to do that. BTW, if you haven't followed Easton's work since the Cars aslled it quits, you have to check out his work in "The Empty Hearts". i saw a recent interview with Elliot Easton where he explained coming up with his sound. how he added lots of classic country and rockabilly sound. now when i listen to these songs i can really hear those flavors.
Elliot and Greg both went to Berklee College of Music. Elliot said it helped him understand music and laid the foundation for his style.
he and the other musicians are so talented! each member brings phenomenal talents to create a magnificent whole. The Cars are one of the greatest bands of all time.
ETA: this live version of ‘Take What You Want’ is incredible! Elliot’s solo? WOW. one of the best guitar players of all time.
also, Benjamin Orr is just dreamy. that voice, his gorgeous good looks. absolute rock star.
    RIP Benjamin & Ric 🙏🏻

I still remember as a kid riding in my friends moms car as we left the record store and she put in the cassette for this album we both
bought and just thinking wow this is ....? like nothing we ever heard! I was a hard rock and metal fan but we loved it! I still do.
This is what the cars were like in 78 but the crowds would go crazy! I know this was shot in studio but it's still fantastic.

This is one of my favorite recorded shows by them. Elliot's turned up crunchy guitar is bliss! David's changed up rock style drumming is the perfect accompaniment and Ric and Ben's vocals were edgy and tough. Such a tight band and so cool how they presented their music in this video.

Different decorum/etiquette in Europe vs US. They’re more deferential. Plus it was still early days, their debut album had yet to hit big in Europe as it did in the US, so they had some catching up to do. Also (someone correct me if I’m wrong) I understand the audience was made up of mostly industry people (i.e. not regular folks like you and me) who see this kind of stuff all the time so they’re not easily enthusiastic about it.

Ric Okasek and Benjamin Orr were both children of East European immigrants. From Baltimore and Ohio, they actually started out in bands that were folky. Their heros in the beginning were Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.
I've been searching for early stuff from them, maybe singing shit like "Our House" before they realized that hippie rock was nowheresville and New Wave was the future, at least until about '86. Saw them in '79. Like here, when I saw them, they struggled to reproduce their flawless studio sound.
