Inverters aren't too bad to wire up in those big beefy idiots. Just use thick batt cables to run back to the inverter. He should be able to whack an inverter capable of 1200 watts pretty reasonably, he'll have to run the engine though cause that will drain the battery.. Install it under one of the seats if there is room. Should give more space in the back for lounging and strumming.
Did this on a small Ford Transit, had a thin futon mattress in the back with an inverter hooked up for exactly that, lounging and strumming through an amp

In a way it's impressive just how little power it manages to make for so much fuel burnt. Earlier when you dynoed it made 84 horsepower right? With it feeling noticeably low on power it's got to be 60 something right now, which is impressively bad for 14.3L/100km. Kudos to Donkey for being extreme in its own way.

Former Fuel Systems Engineer (you can tell because I use engineering capitalization lol)
Try pulling the nozzle out 1 spring loop from all the way in at the station. The base of the nozzle has that spring part on it at the base (at least in the states), and a lot of cars fill better if you back off the nozzle a bit when you fill by like 2cm to prevent the fuel from bouncing weirdly in the fill pipe and blocking the sensor that makes the pump click off.
Also, you're fine filling the tank all the way up. If the car was made in the last ~20 years it's got valves on it that won't let you overfill it unless you sit at the pump and trickle fill it for a solid like 5 minutes. "Corking" (filling the tank completely so it can't vent) is super hard to actually do. On a normal car that doesn't click off constantly, to get the most gas in there without risking corking, you want to fill til it clicks, wait 10 seconds, then repeat for a total of 3 clicks. It's the standard fill test we do in industry to rate the capacity of the tank. You'll get more per click the hotter it is outside though, so in the cold it's not going to add much after the first click.
Glad the Donkey is back to being "cromulent"! Cheers!

I'd say this is just a normal van, it's not particularly special. The only reason we don't see a bigger variaty in our utility vans is because of the Chicken Tax. It's literally not worth it to import pickups and vans to the states. They'd have to build them here to avoid the tax, and for many international companies like Mitsubishi, it's just not worth it for the small slice of the pie they'd get since Ford, Chevy and Mercedes have the utility van market dominated here, and the prevalence of full size pickups also cuts into the pie.

(Read in a dramatic tone) And behold, in the midst of its wretched appearance and feeble performance, the donkey van, bearing the marks of toil and decay, experienced a remarkable resurrection. Though its form remained marred and its mechanics faltered, it possessed a newfound vitality. The van's engine, once plagued by sputters and coughs, now grumbled forth with a rough and unsteady rhythm. Its weary tires, worn thin by countless miles, spun in reluctant unison, propelling the van forward on its journey. Despite its battered exterior and its lamentable gas mileage, the donkey van defied the odds and trudged ahead, a testament to the enduring spirit within. In this humble revival, the van, though tarnished and worn, dared to persist, a reminder that even amidst the depths of imperfection, there lies a flicker of resilience and hope.

I have come to a realization. You can do this fuel efficiency test with electric cars as well. Every one kilowatt used out of the car is equal to 1000 joules of energy, or one kilojoule per second). The energy stored in a liter of gasoline is around 33.5 kilojoules, so every 33.5 watts of the electric car is a liter of fuel.

Second, even accounting for the unit error; gasoline has an energy density of 34.2 _Megajoules_ per litre, so your off by literally two orders of magnitude.

I had been waiting for this video to see if it wasn't just my van that had absolutely TERRIBLE fuel economy and it really puts a smile on my face to see that every Donkey van is just as useless as the next.
(I have decked mine out to a camper which.... yeah fuel economy)

i imagine the guy who advanced the timing on this thing is like my dad. when my first car (which my sister and i shared to get experience driving when we were 18) needed a new clutch, he decided to advance the timing without really thinking about it too much. when accelerating it would sometimes make a noise that sounded like a dull spark or whatever, which was undoubtedly pinging. i think the clutch was replaced at like 160k km and the car was completely dead at 210k km lol. it leaked coolant (or burned it), burned an ass load of oil, electricals were messed up because i drove it through a car wash and the cleaning head thing went over the antenna backwards, breaking it. every now n then the radio would turn on at full volume because of that so that was cool. it was really sad to see it get towed lol

It's clicking probably because of the carbon box being all old and crusty, the vapors don't balance out properly and the gas nozzle clicks off because the pressure increases to what would be normally full. Could give the carbon box a whack and see if it works for a bit

Advance the timing until it starts to ping, and then back it off a little bit. Use a "Compression restore" oil additive, they've got stuff in them that fills in the scoring in the cylinder walls, and are very good at breathing life into an old engine.

    • @Jamvan001

That 2.4 engine must be really clapped out. I've seen older vans perform better than that. 😂😂😂Nice seeing the donkey van back though, for a while I thought you were going to junk it. They are very useful vehicles, worth the time in fixing the drive train and other bits, if the body hasn't rusted out.

Eh, the 4G64 usually hit "clapped out" at 80k and flatlined. I had one in a 7th gen Galant from 83k to 150k. Used a quart of oil every gas tank, more on the high way. It never quit and never got any worse(!).

It would be nice to see a rebuild and maybe a turbo installed on this.
I mean, the engine is insanely tough.
The fact that it even runs without issues in this condition just shows how good it is.
A stock 4G64 can take around 400HP at the crank reliably.
So throwing a small turbo (to spool very quickly and at lower RPMs) at it to get 300HP is more than usable and will get you the most reliability possible.
It would greatly increase the usability, plus the added torque at lower RPMs will allow for a better fuel economy since it would have to rev less in a higher gear to get the same speed as before the upgrade.

You can advance the timing 5 degrees to get some of the power back but I wouldn’t advise that. It would probably be better to just change the oil to a full synthetic for high mileage, new intake filter and keep it at 80 kph. The donkey generates tons of drag because of how tall she is, so she has to over compensate with higher rpms to maintain higher speeds due to it being a brick going into the wind. I am glad she is back though ❤
