These two Sherlock Holmes movies are my personal favorites by Guy Ritchie. In my opinion, they represent nearly everything that he does best as a director and the performances from RDJ and Jude Law are the cherry on top. I have my fingers crossed that a third installment will be made someday.
They actually are doing a third film, as it was one of the main reasons RDJ left Marvel. They've yet to complete it, though, mainly thanks to being heavily delayed, courtesy of Jude Law's connection to the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
The best protrayal of Sherlock Holmes not just bc Downey is so good, but it's also more faithful to the books. Sherlock is an opium addict & learned multiple martial arts amongst others. So more chaotic & well rounded in skills.
I enjoy the Guy Ritchie-ness of this Sherlock. Comedy mixed with darkness, fast edits, timely slow-mo, and a banging soundtrack. The sequel is also quite good.
The second film is even better! Please watch it sometime in the future. It is so emotional and perfect! The second one is my favourite! The bromance in that one is even more. It is a rare case where the sequel surpasses the original. Moriarty is also such a great character in it, played flawlessly by Jared Harris. Also, knowing you were a BBC Sherlock fan since all those years ago makes me love you even more Seb!!!! Please watch the second one, you will LOVE it!
the sequel is genuinely my most favorite movie of all time, not because it's the best, but because it's what I grew up with and it's just special to me
I love the demonstration of Sherlock's brilliance. How they had him think through what he was going to do in the underground fight club before he actually did it was a masterfully done bit of cinematography.
That's Irene Adler, Holmes love interest and almost his intellectual equal.. she comes in the BBCs version of Sherlock too and is a main character in the Sherlock Holmes stories
O.o since when was Ms Adler a main character in the stories of Watson? A Scandal in Bohemia and maybe one or two times being mentioned...Originally she was not a love interest and not a main character
If I remember correctly, a lot of these fight scenes are actually RDJ too. He's been training in martial arts, I think Wing Chun, ever since he cleaned himself up, so a lot of that stuff in the movie is legit. Wing Chun is all about blocks and counters in close quarters. it worked so great in the movie and he probably loved getting to bring his hobby in.
So glad you gave this one a chance, it definitely deserves more attention. I wasn't expecting much when I watched it for the first time but I actually loved it.
Love these movies! Rdj and jude law are absolutely perfect in their roles. Also Rdj's british accent is probably one of the best ive heard from an American actor.
"It's literally Batman and Catwoman." Early Batman comics referred to him as "the world's greatest detective", and focused on his mystery solving skills just as much as his combat prowess. The parallels are all intentional, Robin is Watson, Alfred is Mrs Hudson, Gordon is Lestrade, and yes Catwoman was very much modelled after Adler.
Because of these movies and the Sherlock show, when I saw RDJ and Benedict Cumberbach in Infinity War on the ship, I was really hoping someone would say "No shi*t Sherlock" or at least some kind of reference. Sadly that did not happen.
I definitely recommend watching the sequel.. Also, you mentioned having never seen RDJ in a comedy, so I would remedy that by checking out "Tropic Thunder"
I don't know why he said he hasn't seen him in a comedy before because he actually has already seen Tropic Thunder. th-cam.com/video/gpvErUfFx6w/w-d-xo.html
The OG Batman was actually a possible real person/urban legend of Victorian-era London called Springheel Jack... elements of his story probably served as inspiration for characters like Batman and Sherlock Holmes.
In the original books Sherlock was a master of boxing but in the “Adventure of the Empty House” it was revealed that Holmes is a master of Baritsu which is a fictionalized version of a real martial art called Bartitsu which combined English boxing, French Savate kickboxing, judo, Japanese Jiujitsu and Swedish cane fighting. My personal favorite Holes is Jeremy Brett however I love the radio program and movies starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce also. The radio episodes are on Audible.
Professor James Moriarty, the Napoleon Of Crime, Arch Nemesis to Sherlock Holmes. And the version of him they brought to these films. . .is one you DON'T want to miss.
GREAT watchalong with you, sire! Thanks for that. Downey did sign off on an approved script for the third outing, and they had the window between Infinity Wars and Endgame, sadly I guess reshoots narrowed the window and they didn't get around to the third one. Yet. Oh and I do see the future... you checking out the next instalment, then Man from UNCLE, then RockNRolla... please. Guy Ritchie ftw!
i know we're not at 7k likes but my god please watch the second one as well!!!!!! it has an incredible plot, more sick action shots and one of the coolest slo-mo sequences ive ever seen, filmed by non other than gavin of the slowmoguys here on youtube!!!!!
grew up watching this with my dad and is always a go to movie for me and him and i love the second one as well and can;t wait for you to watch it and also i can't wait for the 3rd one to come out in the next few years
I adore these films! Saw the first one on a scouts retreat when I was about 12 and was spellbound. They've always been the definitive Sherlock and Watson to me. Loved this reaction and hoping so bad for the second as well!
Robert Downey jr. is excellent as a comedic actor in "A scanner darkly" adapted from the Philip K Dick novel. Well worth a watch. The original Holmes character was a Heroine and Concaine addict who was developing his own style of martial art in the novels, so this modern adaptation is not too dissimilar from the original. My favourite quote: "My dear Watson, simply because I inject myself with a five percent solution of heroin..." Watson: "7 percent Holmes"! Sherlock: "Do you think I don't notice you dilute it"?
this movie is underrated because everyone thinks Cumberbatch when they hear sherlock holmes it seems. this will always be my favorite Sherlock because of RDJ and Jude Law's chemistry.. as well as the awesome filmmaking and music. the freaky occult and illuminati-type stuff in it push it to another level for me. And the second one is just as good if not better because of the wonderful way they handled Moriarty!
Moriarty only physically appeared in two writings and only mentioned in a handful of others. Movies and tv have made him out to be much more of a direct threat than he really was.
I absolutely love these movies. So glad to see you reacting to it. Definitely watch the second one. Also, the score to this film is one of my all time favorites. There has been talk for years about finally getting a third installment....here's hoping.
Love this movie and really do want to watch Sherlock show just never got around to it. Its hard to explain but Sherlock is the perfect character to have plot armor and be OP because he is like the first super hero. So nothing ever really feels out of place that he is great at almost everything. Why? Because he is Sherlock Holmes its just that simple.
If you love guy ritchie i would definitely recommend the movies 'The Gentlemen' and 'king arthur: legend of the sword' those are two of my favorite films for sure!!
5:33 A take I quite agree with. While I love him as Tony Stark, I saw these movies first and he will forever be Sherlock Holmes in my heart. Also a fun bit that is not pointed out in the movie is that each of the deaths on the cross also represents an element. Rierdan is buried in earth, Sir Thomas drowns in water, Standish dies by fire, and Parliament was going to die with air.
1. Moriarty is indeed Sherlock's nemesis in the books 2. It is so strange to watch someone that didn't know that the Oscar nominated Downey is considered a great actor. 3. "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang" is a wonderful mystery/comedy starring Downey 4. PLEASE REACT TO THE SECOND FILM
12:06 If you wanna see him in a comedy, check out "Due Date". It's got RDJ and Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), very underrated but it's worth a watch! 💯
26:02 This is a nod to the books, they were written based on Watson’s notes about his adventures with Sherlock. Huge asterisk there because it’s still entirely fiction, lol
I absolutely loved this movie, AND the second one for that matter. I always wondered how Brits felt about RDJ's version. I can understand if they would be put off by an American playing a beloved legendary British hero. I also liked both it and Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes, they both did amazingly in my opinion. It's understandable how they both play a supremely egotistical and intelligent character both in Sherlock Holmes and their respective characters in the MCU in Tony Stark and Dr. Stephen Strange. I loved it. Glad Sebastian did too. Made me love it even more.
I feel like the Sherlock fandom and this movie and the Game of Shadows fandom are pretty polite. We say we love them all and they're all stylistically different so you can enjoy them all for different reasons.
27:25 My guess with the woman at the beginning and the five others who died was that it was a combination of a drug induced trance and some sort of hypnosis, gets them into a state where they'll basically do anything when told including killing themselves - she did look like she was on something ie her eyes rolling back into her head and her convulsing. Some reckon that we can't do anything under hypnosis that we don't already want to do so I guess Blackwood was seeking out already depressed, suicidal and vulnerable women (remember Holmes said that her parents had hired him so I guess she must have been doing something that concerned them for a while) so it wouldn't take that much for him to talk them into killing themselves. Just add the right scenery and costumes and have a lot of it done in another language and then it'll look like 'black magic' or like she was being possessed. Basically as Holmes said, it's nothing but conjuring tricks.
Idk if anyone has said it but the fighting style Sherlock is using is Wing Chun, which is a martial art that Robert Downey Jr actually knows as he used to help get over his drug addiction, it's also the fighting style Tony stark practiced
Dude this movie dont get enough praise and the sequel is better too
I’m still holding out for a 3rd to close off a trilogy
Agree, but the sequel is NOT better
Love both them movies and im pretty sure RDJ is still working on the 3rd one.
@@pleebianmusk The sequel is better purely off the shoulders of Jared Harris
@@pleebianmusk it is ;)

They actually are doing a third film, as it was one of the main reasons RDJ left Marvel. They've yet to complete it, though, mainly thanks to being heavily delayed, courtesy of Jude Law's connection to the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

Agreed
honestly the 2 movies are so underrated especially the second one, its a banger of a master piece

I have to disagree personally. I liked the second one but this is the better one.
I was shocked to realize that he was the same guy in Chernobyl
that was a scary moriarty.
True ,second is even better 99% . so I'm not alone in this xD
I totally agree, the first one's fun and well done but I also lean towards the second one :)
No way, can't believe you reacted to this. One of the most entertaining films I've ever had the pleasure of watching.

"You wear a jacket" has become our favorite line 😁
So glad you gave this one a chance, it definitely deserves more attention. I wasn't expecting much when I watched it for the first time but I actually loved it.
"First thing with Jude Law" no Seb. You've seen Captain Marvel at least :)
Yes, Professor Moriarty is Holmes' ultimate nemesis in the novels
Your comment about Holmes being the OG Batman is actually spot on! Sherlock Holmes was a big influence on the original Batman comic writers.
“Imagine an evil Sherlock Holmes”
He’s in the second movie
Love these movies! Rdj and jude law are absolutely perfect in their roles. Also Rdj's british accent is probably one of the best ive heard from an American actor.

"Evil Sherlock" is literally Moriarty LOL
Robert's Sherlock and Andrew Scott's Moriarty will be perfect
RDJ has a lot of movies that don’t get enough credit. I love him as Sherlock. I also enjoy Due Date. The Judge, and The Pickup Artist.
I definitely recommend watching the sequel.. Also, you mentioned having never seen RDJ in a comedy, so I would remedy that by checking out "Tropic Thunder"
Wait…you’ve never seen Tropic Thunder? Oh, you HAVE to see that movie. Also if you want to see “baby”RDJ in a comedy you can see Weird Science. 😂
I don't know why he said he hasn't seen him in a comedy before because he actually has already seen Tropic Thunder.

Game Of Shadows- the second movie somehow gets even better especially with the main villain!! It goes so crazy! Cant wait for you to watch it!

Love the soundtrack, too.
Especially the late Luke Kelly singing the Rocky Road to Dublin Town.
so stoked you’re reacting to this!!
can’t wait for you to react to the sequel!!
THis movie described almost EXACTLY how smart and admittedly unhinged Sherlock was in the earlier books.
Professor James Moriarty, the Napoleon Of Crime, Arch Nemesis to Sherlock Holmes. And the version of him they brought to these films. . .is one you DON'T want to miss.
The best version of Sherlock, end of discussion
I can't even tell you how many times I've watched this movie!❤❤
Sherlock Holmes films with RDJ and Jude Law are soooo damn good ands one of my favourites till this day!
Hans Zimmer's scores for both of these films make them both timeless.
omg my fave Sherlock and Watson ship is this RDJ and Jude law version! you have to watch the second movie then!
Phenomenal film. I watched it at least once a week for the first 3 years after it came out, and it's still in my top five.
Tremendously stylistic. Such a great movie. The score by Hans Zimmer is up there among his best.
Seb it's already reached 7000 likes, keep your word and react to the next one!!!

James Moriarty is Sherlock Holmes’ arch nemesis dating back to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories. His portrayal in the sequel is so fantastic.
Moriarty only physically appeared in two writings and only mentioned in a handful of others. Movies and tv have made him out to be much more of a direct threat than he really was.

both of these movies are so so so good
I also love that you’ve seen the show, it’s one of my favorites 🥺
Me still waiting for the second movie here. By the way this was before the show.

The 2nd movie is a must-watch too!!! We need it Seb lad🙌🏻

Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes is hillarious and great.

RDJ in comedies? Weird Science, Heart and Souls, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (more comedy-noir)
Lets go for next film 😢😢😢😢😢😢😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Jude Law was in Captain Marvel and the Fantastic Beasts series as young Dumbledore
Love this movie😂😂
"Where did that come from?" is the line of the movie. Bless that unknown actor.
