Mulan is what every strong female character should be. She's not arrogant, in fact she doubts herself quite a lot but she pulls through because she's brave, she's not naturally skilled, she actually starts out as one of the worst, and she's not the best because of feminism or plot, she's great because she was determined and smart. Mulan feels so much more human than most other strong female characters we have in the modern day because her story is about self-discovery which is one the most relatable and human ways a character can develop. Most studios nowadays would have Mulan be naturally the best and then have her learn a slight bit of humility while still ensuring the audience knows that she's the best that ever lived, instead the movie shows a bright young woman who is unsure about who she is who rises to the top after hard work and learns that while she may not be what society wants her to be, she can still live a life that _she_ is proud of. The scene where she climbs that tower using the weights really highlights how great her character is, she doesn't get arrow because she's the strongest, she got it because she was smart and wrapped the weights together rather than fighting against them.

That's why I love the Pocahontas Disney movie so much. It's not historically accurate in the slightest, but I love that version of Pocahontas because she is curious and brave and kind and stands up for herself and those around her. She doesn't end up with the love interest at the end. Instead, she decides to stay where she is needed, with her family. I just relate to her a lot and it sucks when all people see are the historical problems in the movie. It's a movie! It's fiction! Get over it! Lol

disney was very respected in the 80s/90s, having extremely strong and independent female characters (jasmine, ariel, belle, esmeralda, and etc etc etc), look at how they've humiliated themselves and become such a joke now... how have they've fallen so far... making a $hitpile of everything they get their hands on that is not theirs... and when they actually do something that is their own, it's the same $hitpile...

Yeah, it takes a special kind of fan, though. I think they're made of steel or something. Samurai would carry them in situations where they couldn't carry a sword, for whatever reason. I remember reading a book series where women would carry them for self-defense in situations where openly carrying a weapon might complicate the diplomatic side of things, but I can't guarantee that that specific aspect is rooted in the real world. I wouldn't be surprised, but I haven't found any specific mentions of it.

One thing I don't see a lot of people talk about is at the end, you see two different types of bow. When the emperor bows to Mulan he does a respectful bow that implies equality. That is why everyone else around her knelt as the bowed onto the ground which was something implying whatever they bowed to (be it person or deity in prayer) was greater than the one bowing. He basically called her as equal to himself as the emperor and therefore greater than the rest of them, which is why they all hurried to bow down before her to show proper respect. It was pretty much the greatest honor he could give her.

Mulan is based on a poem in China where the female warrior (Mulan ) fought for her country at a time when women were not allowed to fight as a soldier. After she saved her country and they found out she was a woman impersonating a soldier she was inevitably killed. Unfortunately the Disney version takes away from the actual possible historical presence that the poem originally had. However, everyone is uncertain on whether or not she existed. Very sad indeed, but great reaction.

Shan Yu and the Huns had a very different way of life than the rest of China, with one of the biggest differences was how women were treated. Female huns could hunt, fight in the military, and even divorce their husbands. Shan Yu might have even respected Mulan since she was a capable and cunning warrior. • @spacemonkeyentertainment6413

The thing is, it's not really that much about gender in the end, but more universally about "being different than the people around you", "standing out" and the whole "your weakness is your strength"-thing, all universal and often used themes. Yes, Mulan is different, because she is the only woman among a group otherwise comprised of dudes, but she falls in with the party of misfits who stand out on their own already, each one not exactly being the poster child for the "perfect soldier", her simply being mistaken for another "scrawny guy". I'm not saying it wouldn't work if it was only Mulan and it in fact only made its point through gender (to save time for more action or whatever), but imo it just works so much better this way.

Then, having consideration towards someone doesn't mean it's always romantic or having a sexual desire? It's rly weird to always connect smth with their sexual orientation.

Shang is their general who taught them to fight and make war, as a general if one of his men would have done something incredible, he would be PROUD, when Ping told him that, he was proud and had consideration for "him" esp after what "he" did.
You realize that in an army their lives are at stake, bonds are formed (which again have nothing to do with sexuality or romance) because they can die at any moment etc...
You'll be surprised, but yes, a straight man can be proud & having consideration towards another man without it being sexual or romantic ! It's creepy to connect everything to smth sexual.

In the previous scene Mulan is sitting beneath the dragon when she decides to take her fathers place in the army. It is at that point, the great stone dragon awakens and solidifies Mulan‘s resolve to take her fathers place. That’s why you keep seeing imagery of the dragon throughout Mulan’s transformation, and a final flash of the dragon before her grandmother wakes up and realizes that she is missing.

In WWI a young Serbian woman named Milunka Savić joined the army in her brothers place when he was drafted. Her brother had Tuberculosis and was unable to fight, she didn't want him being arrested so she masqueraded as him to take his place so he wouldn't be punished. When the soldiers found out she wasn't a man, they still allowed her to keep fighting because of how well she fought and her courage in battles. After one of the battles the soldiers were asked who fought bravely and many said she did.
