I understand that we are all responsible for what we buy but this absolutely killed me. The customer seemed super nice and I never once heard him blame anyone but himself. This is horrible for the hobby.
Even buying from reputable dealers a consumer can get burned. As soon as I received a British Trade Dollar coin I immediately put the coin on the Sigma. The coin read outside the brackets for 90% silver. I then put the coin on the scale. The weight was way off. I immediately noticed the seller and told him I was sending the coin back. My money was refunded. I was fortunate.
My dad always said that at some point we all have to climb up 'Fool's Hill' by ourselves to learn a hard lesson. If something seems too good, it usually is. Kudos to you guys for educating him and to him for being willing to share an expensive series of mistakes.
It is good to see honest people take the time to show a new collector ways to authenticate the items they are buying. It is difficult to watch how this customer got taken advantage of but you both exchanged valuable information to him so he knows going forward what to look out for. Good job!
Buying his "problem" coins and providing holder cases as a gift really shows your intent to promote the hobby through education, transparency and ethical transactions ! My opinion, the pawn shop knowingly unloaded fakes.
Not a new problem in the 70s it was whizzing. It won't ruin the hobby just forces people to educate themselves before spending money. I would bet you most of these coins were priced (at a real steal). People fall over themselves to save a couple of bucks. Buy a nice loupe. This guy was spending more money on pcgs than the coins are worth!
This is why I’m glad I started as a kid with a lot less spending money. My mistakes were mostly slightly overpaying or buying coins with mild cleaning. So many fakes around now
Some coins are hard to find that have never been cleaned such as the Barber series. Mild cleaning seems to be acceptable to many collectors with the halves and quarters. Even the PCGS ones that have no indication of cleaning on them look to be slightly cleaned at times. Finding ones with no damage that are full rimmed is more of the problem with them.
Great video and thanks for sharing this experience with us! Counterfeit coins are definitely one of my nightmare situations when it comes to collecting higher value coins, definitely worth knowing what you're collecting!
Guys, thank you to you and the gentleman who came to your shop with the cleaned and counterfeit coins. This is a very good lesson for beginners and I hope your video gets a lot of views. Keep bringing interesting content like this and thank you for sharing your knowledge.
EDUCATION, EDUCATION, EDUCATION You must know what you are buying. The man that has the best knowledge wins in the end. Learn from your mistakes and don't make them again.
Another great video 😊😊 am a new collector i always take hours doing my research on coins etc and see the online dealers cus u just never know glad i learned and get educated before anything first about collecting etc from the older guys that been on it for a good while on ytube..
I'm tired of Dealers/Coin Shops selling coins (especially Morgans) raw for MS prices, but the coin is AU/problems. Truth being told the coin was sent in for grading and came back problems...then cracked out and up for sale. Very few Dealers/Coin Shops will ever let a raw $$ coin get by them to a Collector. As for most Pawn Shop owners, they know what's going on. Appreciate you Drew, Casey at Acousha. You do what you can to help collectors. Again there are others who speak about helping/educating but sadly its a sales technique and its about sales $$. Its just the way it is...PS. I seen a 1893-S high XF/maybe low AU going to auction from an estate sale, looked ok...but when weighed it was over by a lot. It was entering auction and glad the Dealer pulled it. All the best....still collecting in the jungle.
yeah but that is not what happened here. to me this guy seems dumber than a box of rocks. this isn't some shady small town dealer ripping people off. this is a gambler who literally says "i don't know anything about coins" ... coin collecting is a hobby mostly focused on learning about coins. this guy is not a coin collector and knows nothing about coins yet he sends in about 100 or so coins to get graded in a year at least. boggles the mind. he is buying cleaned coins off ebay ... literally duh who hasn't done that once.... everyone has but this guy does it over and over again never learning or even realizing his mistake until the grading company sends them back to him... buying fake coins from a pawn shop. Why doesn't he buy from JM bullion or Apmex or a local coin shop or online reputable dealer? literally anything is better than buying raw coins from sellers you don't know on ebay and not verifying and sending them back right away or buying from a pawn shop when you "know nothing about coins" smgdh. if you don't know anything about coins why aren't you taking some time to learn something.
My key move to getting good raw coins off dealers before they grade them is to just ask what they think it is, and if we agree, I just pay them graded price minus the fees. They get the full value, I get my coin cheaper and don't need to crack it out, and the grading companies get stiffed.
I stay away from AU/MS coins since I live in the South where humidity is an issue and don't want to have to worry about them degrading over time. I don't buy the hype of the toned coins. The expertise of telling the difference from AU up is more than I want to jump into. There are lots of coins that can be collected in lower grades that are valuable and be easily kept in albums without the concerns one would have with the higher grades. I would rather have a key Walking Liberty or Barber Half in VG to VF condition than a Morgan Dollar in EF to MS. I sold my stamp collection for the same humid reasons. Those that live in places with low humidity have a real advantage. I know I can use desiccant and such but happy to do it the way I do it.
@@TheWinstonDoubleyour plan for buying precious collectible coins is good but doesn't it take a highly trained eye or actually three sets of highly trained eyes like the pgcs and NGC people do in order to know what that coin is truly graded for

I'm 59 now but when I was 9 I got a California gold piece from my neighbor for helping him clean his yard, man I thought I was the richest kid in the world and started coin collecting, mostly Buffalo nickels and wheats, but I was hooked, years later I found out that California gold piece was fake,so a fake coin got me into coin collecting and I haven't look back,it's the best hobby in the world so do your best at educating yourself and learning, have a blessed day.
i agree it is a great hobby and every beginner gets scammed at some point. the great part about it is learning how to spot the fakes, learning how to grade the coins and learning how to identify problem coins. if you don't invest time into that i dont' know what anyone would be in the hobby for. if you want to invest in something buy an index fund.
@psilocybemusashi I always tell new people to the hobby to invest in a Mega Red book, still helps me to this day on grading coins I may not be that familiar with.

I was told that you always research your stuff before you just jump into an investment and if you don't know, find those who are well into the industry and pay attention as you learn.
I appreciate your honesty and empathy in this situation. It's easy to say they guy should have known better. I don't know how a person is blessed with knowledge when they start collecting. I have not collected for a long time, and when I started, I didn't even know where to go to get information. So, unfortunately, some lessons are hard learned. The one lesson I learned early is don't trust a really good deal. EVERY honest dealer has a margin, and they are not going going to under sell something at too much of a loss. I sure wouldn't trust a dealer that's got a deal too good to be true. Also, I have been to a couple of pawn shops looking, and I would NEVER buy anything, especially bullion from them. They are the worst in my opinion.

My heart goes out to Fred. He seems like a really nice guy.
