Not enough people have seen this movie. It's a 70's classic made in the 90s. It a cast full of heavy hitters at the peak of their craft. It is a masterful exercise in tension and release. It is my favorite movie to always elude my mind when someone asks about it. Thank you for reminding me how much it rocks.

I never think of this movie when people ask me 'what are your favorite movies' or whatever, but every time I see anything relating to it, my absolute love for it comes immediately flooding back, and I cant believe I've forgotten about it.
And your '70's classic made in the 90's' is the absolute best description I've read to describe it.

"It's a 70's classic made in the 90s" - That might be the best description for this movie I've ever read. On point. Lots of influences from classic gritty 70s Hollywood movies (French Connection, Pelham 123 ...) as well as from European cinema of that time, esp. the French 60s/70s crime movies (Melville ...).
And I'm right with you, pretty underrated/less known, one of the best action movies of the 90s. But maybe that's the reason, to "classic", not 90s enough.

Finally! A criminally underrated film with an excellent script, A list actors and some of the best car chases ever put on film. Thank you for this one. Frankenheimer made this movie with so many Hitchcockian references. The case being the obvious MacGuffin. However the characters were also the MacGuffin too. They have very vague or little backstories or none at all, which gives more intrigue to the movie. Frankenheimer's method of multi angle cameras is also used in his films. Sam firing the bazzuka at the car is one obvious example of this

You surprisingly hit upon many of my lifelong zeitgeist moments with films that a lot of other reactors don't seem to pick up on. I still can't believe that you did The Last Dragon. This movie has such a great cast and somehow was woefully overlooked. Reno and DeNiro sounds possibly weird on paper but the two are so easy with one another on-screen. The sets and locations give me a very updated The French Connection vibe.

it wasn't until several years after watching this movie, that I truly got it.
when playing Lineage 2, a Korean MMO, people would often band together 'for the task' when a boss appears... you'd see the broadcast of 'we're hunting!', you sign up, you don't know what you gonna fight, who's going there, or how they play, but you sign up anyways. Once you're in the fight, if you're fighting alongside experts or total noobs, it shows... one of them will stand out, for better or worse. And once you're out of there, everyone goes their separate ways, more often than not to then meet up again somewhere else as enemies, and beat the crap out of each other.

I love how they all had a past (except for wannabe coffee ambush guy), but even though they're all badasses in their own ways they were terrified during the big car chase and the shootouts. I like that they were scared and not some super composed professionals like James Bond. Driving fast in traffic is difficult, but driving fast in oncoming traffic would be terrifying. I like that they actually drove the cars in oncoming traffic. If you look at the tach and speedometer inside the BMW they're actually doing 40-50 mph. Usually when cars are on tow trucks in movies the speedometer reading 0 mph and the car not running is a dead giveaway.

  • @portugasque

This is a classic action movie with professionals only involved as main characters and all criminals (an exception occurs to me now but it's a slight one) being in various degrees "professionals" which for once seem to be fairly realistic. I simply loved the cast (more so even than the characters, different cast and this could have gone very dull or plain boring. As it stands it's extremely engaging, and I loved that you appreciated it at least as much as I did possibly even more. This is not the usual kind of movie (pardon me, film ;) ) I am usually drawn to but at the same time I think within it's genre it's one of the best made in my lifetime so among the best in the past half century give or take (do take) a decade or so. The cast IS indeed superb. And your reaction makes my day (as it has made many other days past and looking forward to that being the case in the future). Many kudos to reacting to this gem in a way that has uplifted me no end and maybe many other ppl as well so: Thanks!

I love how this movie starts out like, "Hi, I'm a John LeCarre-type 'thinking person's' spy movie" and then says, "nope I'm full of gunplay, explosions and car chases--psyche!"
The other great Frankenheimer film is the original (60s) version of The Manchurian Candidate, featuring a wonderful performance by Angela Lansbury.
I've had a soft spot in my heart for Michel Lonsdale ever since he played Claude Lebel, a police detective on the trail of an assassin in The Day of the Jackal. I was delighted to see him pop up here as Vincent's friend/mentor. The look he gives when DeNiro says, "I would never hurt a friend" lets us know that wasn't his concern at all. Quite the contrary.
Btw, Day of the Jackal is worth seeking out. It's based on a bestselling thriller that's tremendously suspenseful. And the movie... isn't. But it's still engrossing because it's two "how to" manuals in one: how to plan the assassination of a high-profile target and how to search for a man about whom you have no information at all--but what you DO have is the entire French police apparatus at your disposal. The result is a great cat and mouse game.
    Enjoy! Thanks for the reaction!

The film shows how confusing and terrifying driving fast through an uncontrolled environment (ie not a dedicated secured track) is. The stunt drivers are outstanding and the behind-the-scenes stuff is fascinating.

When it had been tried before the aim had been to keep the cameras insulated from the vibrations so that the picture would be steady. One of the rare films where Sean Bean doesn't die! If you like Natasha McElhone, see the raunchy comedy show Californication (main star is David Duchovny).

The one movie where Sean Bean’s character realises who he’s being played by and nopes out before dying 😂

DeNiro is excellent in this, and Frankenheimer has never been better from an action perspective. I've always been a bit baffled why this wasn't bigger. My suspicion is that as DeNiro had been lazily cashing-in with a few bad movies in the run-up to this one that action fans stayed away. A shame, because DeNiro is tremendous and has a great chemistry with Reno. Lots of 'Hey it's that guy!' fun too, and Pryce always makes a good baddy. It's clear that the makers of Bourne were taking detailed notes, watching this.

It is overlooked by too many people, this one. I am glad you watched it, not just because it's great, but because hopefully the video stays up without strikes and that signals to other reactors that they can monetize a reaction too.

Remy Julienne was a master choregrapher.

Remy Julienne wasn't involved in "Ronin" 🙂 The coordinator for the car stunts was Jean-Claude Lagniez, a former Rally driver and longtime collaborator of Remy Julienne. Stunt drivers were, amongst others, former Formula 1-driver Jean-Pierre Jarier who mainly doubled De Niro, sports car racing drivers Michel Neugarten (doubling for Natacha McElhone and flipping the BMW) and Guy Chasseuil and also guys from Remy Julienne's stable like Gilbert Bataille (famous for driving the tanker truck sideways in James Bond 007 - Licence to Kill).

Other great Frankenheimer films are Black Sunday, the original The Manchurian Candidate, 52 Pick-Up, and Seconds. Oh, and 1979’s Prophecy, while not great, is quite fun.

Oh, I don't know if you noticed, but watch this video from the start, and keep an eye on Pippin. All the way through Emily's intro, he was makin' biscuits, then shortly after he's got a paw on Emily's shoulder. It's almost like he's supercharging a move, then applying it. What move? That's for your imagination......and a writing prompt, for the aspiring writers among the comments.
