When I first watched this movie, I remember this scene got me to actually pay attention. We were in class and I really just wanted to sleep so I was resting my head and then this scene came on and I looked up and just felt all the emotions one could possibly feel. I watched the rest of the movie in awe, but this particular scene just blew me away. I wish there could be more artists in the world that could produce an ounce of this guys emotions on their songs. That would be splendid.

I've figured it out. It's official! This is my favorite movie. THE favorite movie. The one I could watch over and over again and never get bored. Even the title is perfect: they were just people, from everyday walks of life, who came together and celebrated what they could make together, singing in beautiful harmony. Dear lord I loved this movie!!
Her clapping after he finished the song REALLY made me appreciate the talented buskers 2:36 . I almost always give them a penny and try to have a little chat to know their story. I still remember running to ATM to get some cash for a little girl, who played violin in Vienna.
I got the DVD from the library one saturday, brought it home, never heard anything about it, knew nothing about the movie. I started to watch it all by myself , no one around so you can hear every word. I watch it at least 3 or 4 times that weekend, it's so emotional, started to cry several times in the movie, it's one of the best movies I have ever seen and the music just blew me away. then to find out they won an academy award for the music was unbelievable. I will never forget the experience of watching it for the first time.
The shot composition for this scene is just such beautiful imagery. The camera starts far back, fading in from black on just another street performer nestled between two mid-scale clothing shops and playing literally next to two dumpsters, backlit by a dingy alleyway. We start pulled back from the performance, but just as the music begins to swell, it slowly draws us in. Then we begin to see the true nature of the performer, the man. His guitar, worn clear thru on the body from the harshness of his strumming, his clothes, humble and practical, his breath steaming from the cold and the ferocity of the lyrics that escape him. As he plays, it feels like he could burst into tears at any moment, truly harnessing his pain for his art. And then the beautiful pull back at the end, showing us he has a single listener who pulls us and him back into reality. Phenomenal.

When I first heard about this film, people had said it was pretty great. When I sat down to watch and this song began, and the credits started and this song progressed, well...my jaw just dropped, wide open. The way Hansard sings and the emotion he puts into it is absolutely mind blowing. I consider this one of the greatest opening scenes of any film I have ever seen. And then, it only gets better.
Wow. TH-cam has reminded me that I’ve commented on this clip multiple times throughout the years…. Well I’ll comment again: I just recently rewatched the movie & goddamn, what an opening scene. The raw emotion from him then juxtaposed with her lightly clapping & smiling at him was such a great way to introduce these characters. Plus the song itself is such a beautiful blend of tenderness & anger; hope & frustration.
Fun fact, they filmed this scene in Dublin city centre on Grafton Street, one of Dublins most popular shopping and tourist areas.Which is the same street U2 were discovered on. They filmed at 3am because Glen was a then sort of famous musician with the band The Frames and they didn't want a crowd gathering to watch

After getting rejected by the only woman I loved I saw this movies and this song stuck in my mind I felt a great need to hear it again after a while and when listened to it again I start crying like crazy, this never happened to me before I think this song moved something deep inside me, all my respect to you Glen.
I have been a busker for 5 years now, full time, in MI. It's funny. What it's going well, there's no better feeling in the world. When it's not..... you feel like you must suck. You can't really predict which days will be good either. All you can do is grind it out every day and hope people dig what you do. If you are a musician though, you need to try it.
Everyone's talking about the artist (who is amazing) but I think this scene would have been much less impactful had the director decided to do multiple shots for the song part. During the long take when the camera moves forward with that shaky, uncontrolled motion, it adds a whole new layer of texture to the scene. Such a well executed scene
Well, i met and spoke to Glen for like 2 hours not long ago, and i asked him lots of things, including stuff about the movie... I can tell you what he told me. He said he had to do like 13 takes to this particular scene, and in the last few his voice was already crashing (?? dont know the correct term).. sooo yeah.. fun fact for you :) Btw this is my favourite movie ever, i tottaly fell in love with him and his work as soon as i saw/heard it :)
They are, aren't they. It's amazing how many superb musicians the tiny island of Ireland gave us - G. Hansard, U2, the Kelly Family and so many others.
Wow... August 2020 and this song still feels as emotional as it did on the first watch of this movie. I traveled to Ireland in September 2018 specifically to see Glen and the band under the big top in Ballintubbert. What a magical two nights that was!
I feel like this song holds the essence of every single thing that we as humans are looking to feel through music. Absolutely beautiful, raw, and to the depths of me.
This takes me back to a very specific place in my life. Call it the "honeymoon phase" of heroin addiction. Where there was no pain. Only wave after wave of blissful euphoria. And in that one chord, you all know the one, I can for a split second, everything I felt. October 2013, after the sun went down over the colored leaves leaving the streets bleached with that golden light from the streetlights. A crisp breeze in through the cracked window bringing with it the scents of memories long passed. Sitting with my girlfriend on her bed watching this after we just used. The way she would just look at me was a high in and of itself. Both of us oblivious to the horror that was right around the corner waiting to drive us permanently apart.
Isn't it interesting, how a song that is only 2 mins long can be so beloved. I have loved this movie for a long time... Funny thing is I don't think the message hit me until quite recently. This movie is unique. Well worth the watch. 🌹
I first watched this movie in a foreign country where I had not many friends, working long hours and coming home to an empty apartment... I learned my mom had passed away and I never got to see her again. Hearing this song broke me back then. The pleading to for answers.....
I like this song so much , it is perfect for me I like the way how loud and powerful his voice becomes when the chorus goes And really like how he pronounce words say it to me now and make an accent the word say
the crack on have "so if you haaAAAAAve something to say" is perfect. Glen, if you ever read this, that crack turns a really good song into a fucking legendary 900 power lever song
I remember when the movie was released in theaters back in 2007. I saw the trailer for it and I just had to go see that movie. Unfortunately, I live in a small town in Louisiana which means that the local movie theater was not going to be showing it because it’s a smaller film and smaller films don’t attract the younger moviegoers. I had to wait several months for it to be released on DVD. It was so worth the wait. This is one of my all-time favorites. The music from the movie is some of my favorite songs.
Funnily enough, I knew the stage adaptation before the actual movie because of Cristin Milioti, as far as adding "Falling Slowly" in my Spotify playlist because frankly, it is just a great song. Only recently did I finally have the mood to watch the movie. I wouldn't be ashamed to say that as a huge guy with a rock as a heart, I have never cried so much for a movie. But it is not a cry of sadness. It's hopeful, sorrow, happy,.. Truly a beautiful, honest movie.
this is one of the best opening scens in a film ever, period.
Dag S It's not the opening scene though. Him chasing another guy down the street for stealing from him is the opening scene.
That stealing part was a weird scene, I wasn't too impressed, but then this came and I was hooked.
TheJwwinter I think this song was probably my favourite part of the film. Falling Slowly was another highlight.
Debatable

Love this movie and absolutely love the play!!!
Perfect take, unbelievable!
Superb film and class act Mr Hansard.
Just watched this video like 5 times in a row
Isn't it interesting, how a song that is only 2 mins long can be so beloved. I have loved this movie for a long time... Funny thing is I don't think the message hit me until quite recently. This movie is unique. Well worth the watch. 🌹
What a legend
I first watched this movie in a foreign country where I had not many friends, working long hours and coming home to an empty apartment... I learned my mom had passed away and I never got to see her again. Hearing this song broke me back then. The pleading to for answers.....
Wow! Sorry to hear that man.
Goose bumps .... I saw him live once, in a small theater. It was goose bumps then too.
I like this song so much , it is perfect for me
I like the way how loud and powerful his voice becomes when the chorus goes
And really like how he pronounce words say it to me now and make an accent the word say
the crack on have "so if you haaAAAAAve something to say" is perfect. Glen, if you ever read this, that crack turns a really good song into a fucking legendary 900 power lever song
Bonnie Raitt has a voice crack in her cover of Guilty. Like you said, it elevates the song into something so real.
I loved this opening song too great
I remember when the movie was released in theaters back in 2007.
AMAZING - Great Movie and Brilliant Musician! Props GLEN HANSARD!
