Well, Was going through many digital prototyping tools videos. and coming through this video was the best thing. Within an hour I created 15+ visualizations, user interactions using pen and paper. At any time I can quickly make altercation. Watched the following video too on digital prototyping and that gave more insights. Thanks Team. It's wonderfull to see how ppl at google are doing prototyping and learning tricks .
I find that digital prototyping is most effective for me when it comes to ideation. While I think paper prototyping provides a fun outlet to get creative and get those juices flowing, I believe digital prototyping is more effective in the sense that we get a feel for what the final product could look like. Since most projects now take form on a digital platform, it also feels like a surefire way to keep things consistent.
A former UX/UI person from Twitter and Meta told me paper is great when getting feedback because people feel more compelled to giving feedback as the product doesn't seem finished. So I think it really depends what type of feedback you're looking for/what stage you are at.
They go through all those steps and when I go to check out on the order page I’m frustrated and can’t find how to remove that extra item I didn’t mean to click on
Im earning my associates in prototype design at a local community college and this is really cool, i love how there are google products/channels on youtube for startups/wannabe entrepreneurs its sort of like engineering but its also hands on and creative
I get laughed at for drawing my design on paper first, before turning it into a 3D model. I have also established myself as someone who can tackle difficult problems and find creative solutions. Hint: Gravity is also a resource.
I don’t tend to use paper prototyping - I sketch out my ideas on Paper on iPad, it lets my move things around so easily, copy/paste certain element, duplicate sketches, etc. I usually import these into Overflow and hotspot them together (doing the User Flows at the same time). I’ve done paper prototyping in the past, and found some of the interactions more time consuming to create.
I was looking for some digital tools for developing prototyping for my web system project. But I know how to do it now. Looking back for paper prototyping. Think about digital tools later. Thanks for great video.
I want to be a UX Designer at Google one day. You know what, on the desktop site, when you scroll down, the video should auto-resize and pop down with you like in the mobile apps.

I don't see how the paper prototyping is going to be faster than using simple tools like powerpoint or basic wireframe tools such as Mockingbot. It will be easier to share, to modify and environmental friendly. Paper prototyping is only good when you just want to show the layout or something super basic. When you try to show things like shadow and color, then it's time to move to digital prototyping. But it might work really well when you need to present the prototype to customer or people from the external. Paper prototyping seems to be fun to do together. It can draw better attention, hence create better engagement. For this reason, it's worth to try it out sometimes.
I think they are trying to show the entire process from idea creation in your head to completion. The logical next step for us humans (after the lightbulb) is to draw a sketch because it gives us tactic feedback and so makes us visualize our ideas better. Then the next logical step is to put it in digital format. If you skip any step you might jump the gun and not get a solid foundation. But you do whatever works for you because at the end of the day all that matters is you get your prototype out to get feedback.
today early morning I have explored the UX stuff then suddenly find the link of Rapid prototyping from "Google for Entrepreneurs" it's really awesom and informative. Thanks Google for Entrepreneurs
I kept wondering all the video about how Google actually cracks hard-resistant passwords. Probably has to do with this huge bolt cutter hung there in the back.
I am confused by this flint stone prototyping. With so many awesome state of art wire framing tools available, why this paper ? Is this your green initiative ? I see this itself a big project and prone to bugs and high cost. Not viable according to me. I am happy with any of the following Adobe XD, Figma, Balsamiq, etc
Peg board for a background prop? really doesn't say quality or professional I have to say. Presentation timing was nice if not a little slow and patronizing. Otherwise a new take on old tech. Thanks I wonder, is there a better prototype tool, Like a virtual note pad, sketch pad for say a tablet?
Paper - Pin and Ink - I threw that stuff out years ago - I think I have some old yellowed tracing paper somewhere in my old flat files of old time art work from back in college 1978, Where do you buy paper, pins and ink? I still have my old oil paint kit - can we use that. I like to use Photoshop and Powerpoint sometime Illustrator. I thought paper and pin and ink was damaging the environment - I don't ever carry paper money anymore - with direct deposit and plastic - I make all my purchases - but then I've been waiting for the Mark of the Beast so I could buy, sell and trade again. Why do we have computers - if we are going to use paper and ink - that stuff is so nasty - smears and leaks in your pockets. paper and ink carry germs - that stuff is naasstea. Besides with a fast computer - I can knock that stuff out way faster than messing around with old time technology - How about a steam locomotive can we use that - maybe the coal from the coal car. Google team actually uses paper - they must be trying to help people keep a job that otherwise technology took over. I was holding off on upgrading my computer for them to come out with one that sketches out - what I'm thinking. Looking forward to getting rid of the key board and mouse myself. Gee Wiz - paper and ink - what will they think of next. How about sand script with clay pallets and sticks, wouldn't that be better?
OK, but for me too much speaking/showing in front of camera. I am interested more on how things are being done, hands on, with emphasis on examples. In this case, that means a shorter or a richer in contents video, in both case more useful for the a busy viewer. Thanks for your video.
Sounds great at google, but this kind of approach seems to me like taking designers back to kindergarten level, let's be as non-technical as possible and stick to glue, scissors and crayon-playing, what about prototyping web applications using Plasticine? will that be the next thing? I think UX designers can be more competent (and better paid) if they learn harder skills such as HTML, CSS and why not, Javascript.
Designing a prototype on paper saves much more time than what one would think. At the beginning of the video they state that by working and solving as much as possible on paper, it will be easier when moving on to programming on the computer.
You're talking about different stages of the project. Before spending time and resources coding, you need to understand if the basic navigation logic of the app makes sense.
google could improve it's blogger instead ... 15 plus years and the same crappy formatting options ... instead of peddling this icon oversimplified based neo-capitalism ... There is zero evidence that this kind of storyboarding and planning actually fosters new business..
Wow, paper can be digital as well. Or use pencil and hire someone to rub used paper which have waste prototypes. Nice sustainable prototyping google :/
This happens when you really don't know what to do with money. No sane customer will pay this. And then recording interactions with a phone? Is this video some kind of joke and I just don't get it?
I understand they're ux researchers and researches are doing well what researches do...no one knows or understands what, but sometimes someone expect them to create some output and then again no one cares for a long time.. But as a practical designing technique, all this playing with scissors and paper needs to be included in price of the project. If you can be competitive with this technique, good for you. But digital prototyping is so much faster and faster to create variants and change order of elements.. Copy paste, 5s with mouse and you're done. And you see how it really looks on the screen of your device and with simple hyperlinks you can simulate actions. Simply said I don't see any advantage in this paper prototyping. And to be honest, it's infantile.
The underlying concept is simple: stay low-fidelity during initial design. Everything changes in the early stages and the faster you can make adjustments the better. Sketching on paper or whiteboard is almost always faster than prototyping in software tools. As the design begins to take shape, you increase fidelity. The paper prototype in the video may push that boundary a bit, but working with physical media can sometimes bring out problems you wouldn't think of in prototyping software.
By "sane" you mean your average customer who doesn't care about proper design and UX. Sure. But some companies do care, and they will have to go through processes like this.
This video quickly and succinctly answers the question "Is your idea ready to be put in front of people?" 0:29

Yeah to cut the chain and lock that were on privacy, liberty and freedom. #Goolag.
exact same question came in my mind while whatching this video
Probably. How else would he escape his cubical?
When designs get rejected; they are useful to add them in between in your flows.

So we finally see some of the people that design and create those bloody ridiculous user interfaces that take weeks to figure out.

GOOD TO SEE THE VIDEO.
Good stuff! Question: Where and when do we use the hacksaw in the background?
Um Google slides replaced my paper prototypes a long time ago.
working with UX is like being a child again. that's soo fun
Google finally taught me something useful!
This is a time consuming process. Designers generally create rough sketches and then move on to design tools.
yep
It would be great to have a variety of source resources referenced.
why they works so hard and their skin is still so nice!

I kept wondering all the video about how Google actually cracks hard-resistant passwords. Probably has to do with this huge bolt cutter hung there in the back.
Wonderful information. This makes the UX class I am taking look even more interesting.
Hi, what ux class did you do? And how did it help you progress now? Thanks
Elevation and shadows link has an error message.
Great video, but the links in the description are no longer available. Could you please update them?
Hi are you an aspiring UX designer?
Wow, I plan on making a website or app for my personal training services and this will be very helpful for the development of it! Thanks

really interesting and helpful for a starter
the elevation and shadows link doesnt work anymore btw, cool video tho

Otherwise a new take on old tech. Thanks
I wonder, is there a better prototype tool, Like a virtual note pad, sketch pad for say a tablet?
thank you i learned a lot
Do we have to use the same technique for website prototype??
nuuu
kind of but not exactly
You don't "have to" do anything but basic UI/UX processes are mostly the same for every platform.
wonderful!
Perfect !!! Thanks
At Google they probably didn't heard about Figma yet...
awesome tips and very informative . by the way @Mellisa is so beautiful

You clearly lack clarity of thought... perhaps if you sketched your thoughts on paper you'd find the insight you seek.
you're absolutely right..
Nice
seems a little clunky to use so much paper to track user experience. would prefer basics to be in paper, and then transition to digital quickly
Great
