    It's another great fly! It seems to me that it works fine on many rivers of Kola Peninsula. I've fished jn a classic ones with a success.

    That is a very attractive fly. I have never fished a streamer with a double hook. I can see how the double hook would add weight to the fly and have a keel effect, keeping the fly in a consistent orientation throughout the retrieve. In your experience, does it actually increase your hookup ratio or result in a higher percentage of fish landed than a single hook of similar size?

      Hi handcannon,
      I've rarely lost a fish on a double and it does sit really well though singles hooks are as good at times and are becoming more popular especially as we do more catch and release now...I'm glad you liked the Green Highlander Cascade as it is a nice fly....

    Hi Davie these cascade style flies fish well, with lots of movement when the fly swims. If we strive for movement in our salmon flies, why is it we don't use marabou? I know you do use it in your "snatcher," style of flies.
    Thanks again Davie.
    Stuart

      Hi Stuart, I have tyed cascade like shrimp patterns using marabou and I agree with you it swims far more better than bucktail but it just doesn't last as long though it still fishes well on many waters here in Scotland so it keeps it popular with many anglers..Thanks for the question Stuart..

    Hey Davie, nice fly, you use wax for puttin on your dubbin all the time?..... .cheers

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi hunt4fish,
      I prefer not to use a wax to hold the dubbing to be honest though many tyers like to to do this so I wouldn't say it is wrong...I do like though when tying spider/soft hackles patterns then I'll use a wax to hold fine furs like mole...I have attached the video for you to see the method I used...

      Hi Owen,
      It can be quite hard to find at times though I did find a seller online that seems to have a good selection of their materials, it's lovely stuff to use and the colours suit many flies..I have attached a link to the site I found..

    Davie... beautiful fly. I live in New Brunswick and fish the Miramichi, Restigouche and get up to the Gaspe rivers as well. I notice on many of your salmon flies that the tails are fairly long... sometimes two hook lengths past the barb. In my experience, I've felt salmon nip at a fly with a long tail, but not hook themselves on the barbs. That is why, for the most part, I keep the fly body and tail fairly short so that the salmon hooks itself if it is a short taker. My friend the late Warren Duncan, and Jerome Malloy tie their flies fairly forward as a style and I've kind of followed their lead as well given my experience. Trout are way more agressive and will attack a fly regardless of tail length, but for salmon, I keep the tails rather short. What has been your experience? Have you had salmon nip at a longer tail? Just curious. Perhaps I'm full of the blarney 😂

      Hi Humphrey,
      I was a ghille/guide for many years on my local water and I found this tail length was fine but it does come down to what someone may have had when fishing so I would tye them to suit..I'm glad you liked the fly..

      Thanks for this Davie. I have learned a great deal watching your videos. So thanks so much. I started with a shoe box years ago, now I have a full flytying room. My wife just shakes her head😂 I will say this about tail length...when my wife and I were in London a few years ago, I went to that fly shop across from the Canadian embassy and bought three flies all with longish tails and when I returned home that fall, caught salmon on every one of those flies in the Miramichi so what do I know? But it is interesting when you feel a salmon nip at a fly.👍

    Absolutely perfect. Do you fly fish for sea bass? I know you have videos illustrating the tying of saltwater streamers, but can't recall any mention of fly fishing for sea bass.

      Hi Brandon,
      I've never had the opportunity to fish for sea bass but I have fished for seatrout and grey mullet along the shore in the past and had some nice fish though it's not easy now especially for the seatrout...
      I'm glad you liked the Cascade...

      +Davie McPhail Most of my tying knowledge has come from your videos, so thank you. I live in the States but the fishing here has many parallels. How did you target mullet on the fly ? We also have mullet and I have never been able to get to take a fly. Thank you.

    Lovely Davie, thanks for listening to my suggestion!
    Could you use a artic fox instead of the squirrel?
    Thanks

      @DavieMcPhail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Fishing7776,
      Yes Arctic Fox is a great hair for this fly especially in the larger sizes though the short hair you find at the bottom of the tails of the Arctic Fox is perfect for this style...I'm glad you liked the fly and thanks for reminding me to film one for you...

    Hi Davie, that's a beautiful fly. I've always liked a green Highlander colors and the name. I have one tied by Fran Betters and a Ausable Wulff also for fishing landlocked salmon in northern NY. Since he's passed they are treasured by me. I didn't realize the cascade and Ally's shrimp were tied by the same person, both to me have a similar silhouette with that long tail. There's alot of long tail salmon flies like collie dog and you've tied lots of shrimp type flies with boar bristle for movement but the body seems more compact with the feelers the vibrating away from the mass of the fly. What puzzles me is if these patterns work so well don't the fish short strike them alot? I've watched some salmon fishing videos and read many articles, it seems to be very technical fishing especially in low water. I guess it's the challenge of fishing and not the catching. Thanks Davie, I don't know why but I've been realizing the design aspects of a fly beyond the many techniques that you teach and the ones I knew but have forgotten. You truly are modern and traditional, and also a treasure. All the very best to you sir....

      Hi Joe,
      I know Alastair Gowan who was behind the Ally's Shrimp and the Cascade as I've done demos when he's been either casting or tying, I tyed for him once as well for a whisky company but this was a few years ago..When a salmon wants your fly he will take it, though if he's thinking twice about it then your more likely to have them coming short...When I was a Ghillie I would spend many hours watching the guests fly when they were working through the pool and most times they didn't even know that a fish had looked at their fly, I would get them to fish the fly faster or get them to tye on a smaller fly and this would make the difference between catching or not..I'm glad you liked the GH Cascade, it's a nice fly to tye and fish...

      +Davie McPhail Hi Davie, that's so cool that you knew and tied with him. Like I've told you before, you not only talk the talk, you've walked the walk. You were a Ghillie and know what it takes to beat the fish, and mastered tying the flies to do it. Experience, observation, ingenuity, the recipe for success. To me, you're an inspiration, a champion. See you on the river my friend, and thank you!

    What differences does it make using bucktail for the wing vs. dyed grey squirrel? Normally I use bucktail for everything but curious about using different hairs/furs too

      @DavieMcPhail  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tony,
      It's up to yourself what hair you want to use and I agree bucktail is a great hair to use as I like it in many of the flies I use..

    Dear Davie,
    What is the difference between steelhead flies and salmon flies?
    Would most salmon flies work for steelhead?
    Again, thanks for all your knowledge.
    I am also building bamboo fly rods now. I'm on my fifth rod. I will be building a Dickerson 8015 , 1950 guide special taper. It's 8 feet, 2 piece, 7 weight. Up to now I have built lighter trout rods. And for the most part only fished for trout. But I now have the steelhead fever. I hooked one last week. But didn't land it. have been dreaming about it haha. Hooked it on the swing . I was using a 4 weight 6-6 bamboo I built. I had the fish for 30 seconds before it shook the fly off. I believe the fly was a green butt skunk . It was low and clear water. And it was hooked in a shady spot with trees over hanging. Beautiful stuff.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi CoLbEeBrYaN,
      I would say that there's not a huge difference between steelhead and salmon flies as they do fish well for both species and I do like to experiment with them as you may have seen..I would regularly fish a black fly in low clear water and it has caught me my biggest atlantic salmon on my local water which was 9kg in weight..
      To make your own bamboo rods must be amazing to do as I would have loved to have done this myself as I learnt to cast using a Hardy Palakona which was loaned to me, it was a wonderful rod to fish with...
      All the very best Davie
