When I was 7 years old, in 1945, my mother took me to see them perform live at the Rialto Theater in Danville, Virginia. In those days, they'd show an Abbott & Costello movie, and they would then do their shtick between the movies. They were so funny, they actually broke each other up during their performance. RIP.

They make it look easy, it's really not. These two worked very hard on their timing and intonations in order to get the most impact out of what they were doing. They had literally learned hundreds and hundreds of skits over the years, which they could call upon anytime from memory and could change them up as needed. Funny, funny men!
It is insanely hard! For my 4th grade talent show a friend and I learned 9 pages of dialogue to master Who's On First and we still got lost during "Naturally" and it was INSANELY difficult! To this day however I remember every word.
They're having a lot of fun messing around slightly with bits and jokes they both know _very_ well, such as when Abbott tells Costello to put his shrimp in his mouth and get that over with. Abbott uses his napkin or cigarette hand to cover his mouth when he thinks he might break. It's nice considering they weren't even speaking to each other for a while in '45.
I am a 25 year old female... Was a kid when my dad introduced me to their movies and skits. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein was the first movie I watched by them. My favorite comedians of all time. Its crazy that something from the 1940s could bring joy and laughter to a girl born in 1994. # R.ip. # will forever be classic ❤

My father shared them with me when I was 5. I watched their movies every Sunday morning on Channel 11 NYC and the Abbott and Costello show every afternoon at 3:30 after school. I own all their movies , TV shows and radio shows along with every other classic comedy teams. They are still my favorite. My Dad is 92 and I'm 63 and they still crack us up and they're clean. Wish they were still with us!

My friend and I did this for a school competition once in junior high. Holy cow was that a lot to memorize, but it was a lot of fun! Love these Abbott and Costello skits. Modern comedy just doesn't compare

Lou's reaction when Bud asks him if he has a lisence to practice medicine is fantastic. "Suppose you were married, had a wife and your wife lived in Philadelphia...?" "Then I'd go to Chicago!" Genius. These guys are my all time favourites, watched them since I was a boy and still love them now. Timeless, classic comedy that no-one could ever repeat.

There was a time when I wouldn't talk to people about God or Jesus but slowly, it's getting easier to do. Fevered imaginings? No. There was a time when I used to rip the skin off my lips and fingers and even on occasion my feet. Now, I don't do that. God cleared that up right quick. I spent 39 years doing that. It took a LOT less time for God to rid me of that issue. It's been over a year since I've stopped. When you don't want to believe, I can see how it would not be accessible to you. I miss watching Abbott and Costello every Sunday at Noon. In Philly in the 70s, they were on channel 48.... Every now and then, they'd run Ma and Pa Kettle or a Blondie movie, instead of Abbott and Costello and ruin my entire Sunday afternoon.
Costello is hilarious but this is a terrific example of how great a straight man Abbott was. How he sets it all up & maintains it. Amazing. Both genius' from New Jersey!

I love how Lou drops his Spoon after Abbott tells him ok no aspirin so you want me to have a headache. Haha. Impeccable timing that can only come from years together.
Abbot is known as the 'straight man', but it seems like he was really the crazy one. It's weird, because Costello is known as the funny one, but in reality it was everyone around him being insane. It's his reactions to the insanity around him that was the funny part.
You know, you have a point there! Abbot is still the "straight man" because Costello's spastic reactions are what get the laughs - but your observation really does put these bits in a whole new light!
I think part of it comes from their radio shows. At first you don't notice much of a difference but in the radio shows Costello tended to be more of a silly trouble maker instead of always being a victim of the jokes like in the TV show. Abbot would still give him grief but in the radio show wasn't usually taking advantage of Costello but typically was trying to correct or admonish him. In the TV show he does a lot more double talk and stuff like that. It's interesting how the dynamic of their "characters" changed somewhat, but the nature of their comedy routines are mostly the same.
I'm not afraid of a swear here and there but it's great when people can make good comedy without relying on dirty humor, it makes it safe for the whole family!
Right on man. Bud Abbott is one of the best. He's definitely the best straight man of all time but I personally don't even like calling him that b/c of the stigma attached to it. I consider him a comedian, just like Lou.
Straight men have a stigma- _if_ they do, which idk, i'm no expert-only because it's normally the comic actor who gets plaudits and attention for the jokes the straight men set up. It can be a thankless job, ig, but honestly not all straight men were created equal. If you watch some other old movies with excellent comedy, you'll eventually find some of those straight men are just stiff as boards, barely a presence. Bud Abbott not only actually has a screen presence, but supports Costello effortlessly without taking anything away from him. I think my favorite example of Abbott as a straight man is the role he plays in the "Jonah and the Whale Joke" bit. It's hard to put into words, but it's so perfect.
The absurdity of the characters, the world, the background, the context takes you to another world... just layers of comedy, these guys were operating on some crazy level with the timing and chemistry, just timeless stuff

I don't think people realize how HARD it is to make this look and sound like normal conversation. There IS a written routine here, but they are improvising all around it to make it appear natural and smooth. Comedy today simply doesn't know what this anymore.
Yes, and to perform all of these routines without applause had to have been difficult for them. All the routines they did in their half hour show. No applause.
I saw them on a TH-cam video of a old TV show. They were doing the routine, but between lines they were having a personal conversation. Then Abbott saw another actor in the routine coming on stage, and he said something like Heads Up to Lou. Lou stopped the conversation, and got back in character instantly. Amazing! I'll bet that if they slept in the same room some night, they might start to do the routine in their SLEEP! The reason they were so great was because they worked their asses off learning and perfecting everything they did. Like you said, they worked very hard. They were masters of vaudeville, and their routines were centered around very human characteristics that everyone can relate to. They were great, and that's why we're still talking about them today.

There are no comics today that come close to this kind of routine where they are working loosely to a script but improvising all around it. Today all they do is swear and curse and belittle sex in all its forms.
At the ending Bud says "uh-oh, here comes Warner". Lou says "Too late". Bud says "too late" ? Lou says "were signed with Universal" The BEST duo EVER !!!

In "Hold That Ghost," Bud and Lou don't inherit a nightclub from "Moose" Maxin, they inherit an old house that used to belong to him, and is believed to be haunted. In the end, the boys find Maxim's money and decide to use it to turn the house into a combination nightclub and health spa (a scientist friend of theirs discovers that the water in the house has nutritional value that can make sick people feel like dancing).

I grew up with abbott and Costello I have watched their movies their TV shows their stand-up comedy routines and acts these two are seriously comedy legends I believe 100% that no one in the future will ever match these two in comedy.
The best part of that film was the "moving candle" scene. One of the supporting actresses was Joan Davis, who in the 1950s, was the star of the TV sitcom, "I Married Joan," which co-starred Jim Backus (who played Mr. Howell, the millionaire, on "Gilligan's Island," and was also the voice of "Mr. Magoo"). "Hold That Ghost" also showed a soda jerk played by Shemp Howard, who was one of the original members of another famous comedy team, the Three Stooges. The team started out with Shemp, his brother, Moe Howard, and their friend, Larry Fine, who were "stooges" (back-up players) for vaudeville comic Ted Healy, but after several years, Shemp decided to quit the act because he couldn't stand the way Healy treated him and the others. A few years later, he was replaced by his other brother, Jerry Howard, better known as "Curly," who was a member of the team when they started appearing in movies, sometimes with their old boss, Ted Healy. They eventually broke up with Healy when they started making the film shorts that fans of the Stooges are most familiar with (occasionally, they would turn up in feature films, usually as supporting characters, or as guest stars, or just making cameo appearances). But in 1946, Curly Howard took ill, and was unable to work anymore, so Shemp was brought back to replace his brother, and he, Moe, and Larry continued to make short subjects until Shemp passed away in 1955 (Curly had died in 1952), and was replaced with Joe Besser, who co-starred with Moe and Larry in fifteen shorts (between 1956 and 1958), before quitting the act himself. He would later be replaced in 1959 by "Curly Joe" DeRita. By this time, the trio began STARRING in feature films instead of just doing guest or cameo appearances. Anyway, in addition to "Hold That Ghost," Shemp Howard can be seen in three other Abbott and Costello films: "Buck Privates," "In The Navy" (both from 1941), and "Africa Screams" (1949), which, ironically, also featured the man who replaced Shemp as the third member of the 3 Stooges, Joe Besser (also in the movie was actress Hillary Brooke; she and Besser would, a couple of years later, would become members of the cast of the Abbott and Costello TV sitcom; Miss Brooke played Lou Costello's girlfriend, who used her real name on the show, and Joe Besser played "Stinky the Kid," a rather obnoxious character who dressed like "Little Lord Fauntleroy," and would often bother Costello). Incidentally, Shemp Howard had a supporting role as a bartender in the film "The Bank Dick" (1941), starring another classic comedian, W.C. Fields.

Yep, that and Whodunit were the best, the genius really shone. By the time they went to the "meet the..." movies Lou's son had died and the sparkle was gone.
Loved these guys as a boy back in the 1940's and now, aged 87, still do. I used to go to the cinema in Epsom, Surrey, England, and never missed any of their films. Sadly, their star faded in the ffities whereas Laurel and Hardy carried on. Love 'em all. June, 2023..

This scene from The Noose Hangs High is when they reunited after a rather tense feud between them. In many ways, this movie revitalized their career again after it began to wane. They never skipped a beat it seems. This scene is tight. Practically perfect in every way.
And to think this whole thing started just because Lou doesn't like mustard on his hot dog; putting thousands of people out of work by shutting down a mustard factory; hysterical; love that comedy team as much as Laurel and Hardy! 😄

Our family knew Lou Cristillo, known as Lou Costello. He was a real gentleman. I miss those years. America has changed so much. Just watch their movies, and other classic movies to see what America was once like. Lou Costello was one of my most favorite people ever.
My favorite part of their routines are always when they switch who's the more dominant voice in the argument.. when Bud lowers his voice and says "now wait a minute" as Lou starts to ramp up.. Bud goes on the defensive for a few lines, then he comes right back to take over and back Lou into another corner.. That small aspect goes a long way because it never feels one-sided.. even tho Bud is the obvious straight man..

I miss watching Abbott and Costello every Sunday at Noon. In Philly in the 70s, they were on channel 48....
Every now and then, they'd run Ma and Pa Kettle or a Blondie movie, instead of Abbott and Costello and ruin my entire Sunday afternoon.
Costello is hilarious but this is a terrific example of how great a straight man Abbott was. How he sets it all up & maintains it. Amazing.

Abbot is known as the 'straight man', but it seems like he was really the crazy one. It's weird, because Costello is known as the funny one, but in reality it was everyone around him being insane. It's his reactions to the insanity around him that was the funny part.
You know, you have a point there! Abbot is still the "straight man" because Costello's spastic reactions are what get the laughs - but your observation really does put these bits in a whole new light!

I think part of it comes from their radio shows. At first you don't notice much of a difference but in the radio shows Costello tended to be more of a silly trouble maker instead of always being a victim of the jokes like in the TV show. Abbot would still give him grief but in the radio show wasn't usually taking advantage of Costello but typically was trying to correct or admonish him. In the TV show he does a lot more double talk and stuff like that. It's interesting how the dynamic of their "characters" changed somewhat, but the nature of their comedy routines are mostly the same.

I'm not afraid of a swear here and there but it's great when people can make good comedy without relying on dirty humor, it makes it safe for the whole family!

Right on man. Bud Abbott is one of the best. He's definitely the best straight man of all time but I personally don't even like calling him that b/c of the stigma attached to it. I consider him a comedian, just like Lou.

Straight men have a stigma- _if_ they do, which idk, i'm no expert-only because it's normally the comic actor who gets plaudits and attention for the jokes the straight men set up. It can be a thankless job, ig, but honestly not all straight men were created equal. If you watch some other old movies with excellent comedy, you'll eventually find some of those straight men are just stiff as boards, barely a presence. Bud Abbott not only actually has a screen presence, but supports Costello effortlessly without taking anything away from him.
I think my favorite example of Abbott as a straight man is the role he plays in the "Jonah and the Whale Joke" bit. It's hard to put into words, but it's so perfect.

Rare is right. I've been a fan of Abbott and Costello for ages but can't recall ever having seen this. It's brilliant, and was probably ad-libbed at different points. These two were great! Thanks for posting this.

I don't think people realize how HARD it is to make this look and sound like normal conversation. There IS a written routine here, but they are improvising all around it to make it appear natural and smooth. Comedy today simply doesn't know what this anymore.
Yes, and to perform all of these routines without applause had to have been difficult for them. All the routines they did in their half hour show. No applause.
I saw them on a TH-cam video of a old TV show. They were doing the routine, but between lines they were having a personal conversation. Then Abbott saw another actor in the routine coming on stage, and he said something like Heads Up to Lou. Lou stopped the conversation, and got back in character instantly.

The reason they were so great was because they worked their asses off learning and perfecting everything they did. Like you said, they worked very hard.
They were masters of vaudeville, and their routines were centered around very human characteristics that everyone can relate to. They were great, and that's why we're still talking about them today.

Uncultured So-Called “Comedians Of Today” rely on constantly talking only about Sex, Farts and Poop and to get a laugh.
There are no comics today that come close to this kind of routine where they are working loosely to a script but improvising all around it. Today all they do is swear and curse and belittle sex in all its forms.
At the ending Bud says "uh-oh, here comes Warner". Lou says "Too late". Bud says "too late" ? Lou says "were signed with Universal" The BEST duo EVER !!!

That line about "good rubber" was a reference to the war-time rubber shortage. However, it wasn't from "Hold That Ghost," it was from "It Ain't Hay."
In "Hold That Ghost," Bud and Lou don't inherit a nightclub from "Moose" Maxin, they inherit an old house that used to belong to him, and is believed to be haunted. In the end, the boys find Maxim's money and decide to use it to turn the house into a combination nightclub and health spa (a scientist friend of theirs discovers that the water in the house has nutritional value that can make sick people feel like dancing).

( I may be wrong - it's been a LONG TIME since I've seen their movies) We are commenting on "The Noose Hangs High". It's a shame they don't have the A+C movies on tv anymore. In the 70's they were on every Sunday morning on WPIX, N.Y. on Ch 11 for years.

One of their best movies is Hold That Ghost. Pure genius.
The best part of that film was the "moving candle" scene.
One of the supporting actresses was Joan Davis, who in the 1950s, was the star of the TV sitcom, "I Married Joan," which co-starred Jim Backus (who played Mr. Howell, the millionaire, on "Gilligan's Island," and was also the voice of "Mr. Magoo").
"Hold That Ghost" also showed a soda jerk played by Shemp Howard, who was one of the original members of another famous comedy team, the Three Stooges. The team started out with Shemp, his brother, Moe Howard, and their friend, Larry Fine, who were "stooges" (back-up players) for vaudeville comic Ted Healy, but after several years, Shemp decided to quit the act because he couldn't stand the way Healy treated him and the others. A few years later, he was replaced by his other brother, Jerry Howard, better known as "Curly," who was a member of the team when they started appearing in movies, sometimes with their old boss, Ted Healy. They eventually broke up with Healy when they started making the film shorts that fans of the Stooges are most familiar with (occasionally, they would turn up in feature films, usually as supporting characters, or as guest stars, or just making cameo appearances). But in 1946, Curly Howard took ill, and was unable to work anymore, so Shemp was brought back to replace his brother, and he, Moe, and Larry continued to make short subjects until Shemp passed away in 1955 (Curly had died in 1952), and was replaced with Joe Besser, who co-starred with Moe and Larry in fifteen shorts (between 1956 and 1958), before quitting the act himself. He would later be replaced in 1959 by "Curly Joe" DeRita. By this time, the trio began STARRING in feature films instead of just doing guest or cameo appearances.
Anyway, in addition to "Hold That Ghost," Shemp Howard can be seen in three other Abbott and Costello films: "Buck Privates," "In The Navy" (both from 1941), and "Africa Screams" (1949), which, ironically, also featured the man who replaced Shemp as the third member of the 3 Stooges, Joe Besser (also in the movie was actress Hillary Brooke; she and Besser would, a couple of years later, would become members of the cast of the Abbott and Costello TV sitcom; Miss Brooke played Lou Costello's girlfriend, who used her real name on the show, and Joe Besser played "Stinky the Kid," a rather obnoxious character who dressed like "Little Lord Fauntleroy," and would often bother Costello).
Incidentally, Shemp Howard had a supporting role as a bartender in the film "The Bank Dick" (1941), starring another classic comedian, W.C. Fields.

Moose had a big tonsil and was a roll of money. Good clean fun which I truly miss. Always liked Howard and Curly best of the Three Stooges.
Yep, that and Whodunit were the best, the genius really shone. By the time they went to the "meet the..." movies Lou's son had died and the sparkle was gone.

Loved these guys as a boy back in the 1940's and now, aged 87, still do. I used to go to the cinema in Epsom, Surrey, England, and never missed any of their films. Sadly, their star faded in the ffities whereas Laurel and Hardy carried on. Love 'em all. June, 2023..

This scene from The Noose Hangs High is when they reunited after a rather tense feud between them. In many ways, this movie revitalized their career again after it began to wane. They never skipped a beat it seems. This scene is tight. Practically perfect in every way.
This was comedy at its best. We need a Bud and Lou. They made the world laugh.

Our family knew Lou Cristillo, known as Lou Costello. He was a real gentleman. I miss those years. America has changed so much. Just watch their movies, and other classic movies to see what America was once like. Lou Costello was one of my most favorite people ever.

My favorite part of their routines are always when they switch who's the more dominant voice in the argument.. when Bud lowers his voice and says "now wait a minute" as Lou starts to ramp up.. Bud goes on the defensive for a few lines, then he comes right back to take over and back Lou into another corner..
That small aspect goes a long way because it never feels one-sided.. even tho Bud is the obvious straight man..
