    I believe that in ductile materials, sigma max is sigma UTS (Ultimate Tensile Stress) not sigma y (yield stress)!

  • @matthiasgulczynski1701
    @matthiasgulczynski1701 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    First example (Ductile material) Stress/Strain curve: Point C = Yield Point, the idea is to keep it in elastic region, so the material won't behave in plastic manner. So actually in the example we are lucky enough to design the part with FoS in the way, where we end up at 100 N/mm2 which is elastic region. However as you write STRESS MAX it is should be = Ultimate Stress/Load on the graph. Otherwise it's a bit confusing. By the way I really like your videos - very clear and straight to the point ;).

      point at which the strain(elongation) increase without increase in stress(load).The stress corresponding to this point is called yield strength
      The yield stress measured at a specified % of deformation is called proof stress

  • @RailFan92
    @RailFan92 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am confused in ductile material working stress should be below yield stress which is point C not point E which is in graph, Working stress of ductile material should be in Elastic region below yield stress above yield it will premently deform and component will not function properly.

    good explanation sir
    please answer me this question
    what are factors take into account while choosing factor of safety for design of engine ? & factor of safety of engine?

    • @sanket5856
      @sanket5856 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kiran Kumar there are many parts in the engine brother so according to the parts we choose fos, as for the engine cylinder creep and fatigue failure both present there, for fatigue failure we can use soddeberg criteria and if we talk about crankshaft, connecting rod ,crank and chains ,they suffers fatigue stress.

      rajat chauhan as by considering fos working stress decreases due to which we have to increase the dimensions .for e.g. as we know that stress is inversely proportional to area hence for the same load you have to increase the area.

    is the value of FOS is fixed for every material or we have to find out..then how to find the Value of FOS

    • @sohamzemse
      @sohamzemse 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, FOS is not fixed for any material. You have to choose a FOS value for your component design depending on your wish. if what u r designing is for normal use then you can take FOS around 3 or 4. if designing an airplane, then FOS should be taken as high as you can, to minimize airplane crashes, for example, FOS = 25.

    Hello bro , from where you take fos 3 or fos 4, I didn't understand, can you please reply

    • @niftywalla
      @niftywalla 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is general guidelines about selection of Fs. For ductile material 1.5 to 2 and for brittle material 3 to 5.
      If for particular application, you want to provide more safety u can increase Fs, which will result in to increase in dimensions

    Ductile materials fail if it exceeds yeild stress ... After yeild stress the material deform plastically results in loosening of shafts or any component.... That's why we consider yeild stress as max stress for ductile materials...

      I see. FOS depends on 1) material, 2) loading type (static, dynamic, or shock), 3) cost or economy - FOS prop. dimensions 4) importance [of machine part (in complete machine)], 5) Safety to human life, and 6) life of component (life prop. FOS).
