  • In August of 2019, iNaturalist passed a milestone: 25 million verifiable observations had been added to our global biodiversity database!
This video depicts iNaturalist's growth in two ways:
    - The dots on the map represent verifiable observations added through time, from iNaturalist's start in 2008 through August of 2019. Only one out of every fifty observations are represented (25 million is a lot!). These are not cumulative.
    - The white text displays the total number of verifiable observations on iNaturalist, updated every quarter. It matches the timeline of the map.
iNaturalist thanks all of the contributors who have added observations and identifications!

29,997,834 Observations; 249,949 Species. I think it will be more than 30 million observations tomorrow, and more than 250.000 different observed species soon. Good job everyone. :-)
    Edit: 30,000,680 Observations; 250,075 Species

I'm very eager to go to nature, take photos and learn what the plants and animals are. However, my skill of recognizing plants myself is very poor. I wonder if it is ok to use iNaturalist even if you are not good in identifying plants yourself?

Yes of course! The app automatically suggests possibilities and experts would also often help with identifications! I did not know much about plants either and it got me very interested in learning.
If you go out to take photos of plants for iNaturalist, I would also suggest that you take a few of them from different angles, get a nice clear view of its leaves and as a whole, and then upload all the photos as a single observation. In doing so, you provide more evidence and it'd be much easier to find out what it is! You can always do some digging on your own as well, that's how we learn 😃

Not much in China, probably because of government control of the internet. Overall it is very impressive to see the participation grow and spread across the continents.

I would love to make some species accumulations curves with the data.

Hello, please post a new similar video.
In the past few years, many species have been recorded from Iran.

My hangup is that you made it sound like an Apple product.
