I borrowed one of these mantis tillers some years ago.... they work quite well, and really are the "ticket" for small jobs. 2-stroke carbs I find to be extra "fiddly"... SOO nice that the fix-up kit was available. Also good news that the aftermarket carb did an OK job.

    • @davidfoulk3078

I pulled the carb and disassembled it and cooked it in my ultra sonic with Dawn, a little Purple cleaner and vinegar. Then rebuilt it with a new carb kit. The bottommost plate on its carb has an orifice that must be cleaned. It has a little O ring in it. I cleaned the gas tank, perfectly, and put new fuel lines in it

@@davidfoulk3078 David, I have seen the Honda variety, but I have a Troy Built, four cycle. I beat it to death this weekend at my daughters making her a winter garden. She had been turning it with a shovel for several years. I chewed it up and got all the treee roots out of it with an axe. Hardest soil I have ever tilled but the little fellow did a good job in that hard, red clay. I folded it up and put it in the back of my CRV with a full tank of gas. It burned most of the tank. It started on the first pull after sitting out in the cold for two days. It is nothing like the 916 Husqvarna that I used to have but it is light and handy.. it also does a good job on small areas. I got her winter garden planted, yesterday.

I read all the comments and no one mentioned the hedge trimmer attachment you could buy for these. They were tough as nails, worked great, and it was easy and quick to change the engine head between tiller and hedge trimmer. Bought mine in 1996 and it's still going strong!

@@Thomas-fo9zu I have a 24 inch double sided blade, (cuts on both sides). They made longer single side cutters. Going on memory, can't find my manual. I also have an edger for sidewalks and a crevice cleaner for fracture lines in cement. Edger is just a straight toothed tine wheel, and crevice cleaner is a stiff wire wheel. They mount on one side and have a wheel for the other. Edger and cleaner are ok, but I am very impressed with hedge trimmer. Used it a lot, will cut through pretty thick stuff, never any problems.

Bought my Mantis back in 2003 when I was living in NJ. It's now 2022 and I've been living in Georgia since 2005. Gone through 2 Amazon carb kits since '03 and it's still going strong. It's a powerful little bugger that always surprises people when they see it in action. Just be sure to run all the gas out of it before storing for winter or it'll gum up when you go to start it in the spring.

    • @johnclarke6647
      @johnclarke6647 ปีที่แล้ว

Never had a Mantis, but I use Premium, non ethanol fuel in everything I own two cycle. I never have a carb problem. I do run my two cycle stuff empty at the end of the year if they are going into storage condition. I like Echo Red Armor or Power Blend Gold two cycle oil at 50:1 with a good stabilizer in the gas. I just got back from Marietta turning my youngest daughters garden with my little Troy Built cultivator. It is four cycle, so I treat it like a lawn mower. Never turned over such hard clay soil in my life. It hopped like a rabbit until I got all the roots cut out with an axe. We planted some cold vegetables, yesterday. You have lots of help with grand children helping you. 🤪

My father bought one these back around 1990 and I still have and use it. About 5 years ago it needed a new bulb, cost around $10 from Mantis. They used to sell them via magazine and TV commercial...you couldn't find them in stores. The old ones have a grease nipple on the front of the gear box and the tines are reversible for tilling or mulching. I have a 20x30ft garden that it broke the ground one some 16yrs ago and I still use it for new flower beds ect. Great little tools that are built to last. You have to sort of operate them as if you were water skiing, that is, lean back and let it dig as you sway slightly from side to side.

I serviced one of those Mantis tillers back in the Spring, but it had a tiny Honda 4 cycle engine with primer/purge bulb on the carb. So it obviously required an oil change too, but the thing ran great and was surely quieter than the 2 cycle version. I have a Mantis and it's a beast. It doesn't surprise me that it did so well after the carb change, and it certainly doesn't surprise me with the performance. I have abused mine for many years, and it starts right up at the beginning of the season with 1 or 2 pulls. I wish all small engines performed like the Mantis

It's a gamer changer doing garden beds. I turn a bed with a shovel then use the Mantis to chop it up into fines. Straight rake it and it's like a pool table then.

I find it easier to install the grommet, then the lines. Also, I think the white vent goes under the cover , just behind the throttle cable, right where the cover juts out. Good job.

If you have difficulty handling that one man auger....build a frame like that of a wheelbarrow with the augur able to pivot to the vertical in what would be the centre of the "barrow".
This gives you a wheel at the front for easy transport..
and two handles at the rear of the skeleton "barrow" to control the augur...
and those 2 handles also allow you to lift the augur out of the hole while it is still running....
      leverage is a great thing.

The portion of the fuel line with the white cap (for venting) should be inserted vertically into the notch/bulge of the recoil housing. (Just above the carb between the fuel tank and carb). This will prevent dirt and debris from getting inside your tank. At 11:46 the throttle cable is shown in front of the notch/bulge on the recoil housing. Any way great video. Thanks for sharing

  • @alanb8620

James, I love your videos. Great education I believe that alot of engines with fuel line problems come from the ethanol in gas it either dries or gummy the rubber parts up that's why original part at times take that into the specs of parts that is why they recommend fuel stabilizer in small engines. If you believe so, you might mention it. Thank you for all the hard work and the videos. Great channel.

Yeah, I love my Mantis, and you saw how the tines get easily clogged on long weeds. It's aggravating to have to pull that stuff out. Two strategies- mow and mulch the high stuff before tilling, and keep those tines as sharp as possible so that the tines will "cut" as well as till. Thanks, James..

Good call. Getting the right aftermarket carb can be tricky since they make a lot of "one size fits all", but when you get the right one the aftermarket 2 stroke carbs are usually pretty reliable and they are so cheap it's almost never worth rebuilding one.

I put mantis aerator tines on my Mantis, yesterday and they work fine. I am going to overseed parts of my lawn, today after I finish aerating all of it. Grass does get hung up on the tines but it only takes a little bit to remove it. I have a set of weed reducers but they are on my power tines. These, keep weeds, grass and roots from getting between the tines and the gear case.

Don't adjust the idle with the low side jet. Turn the low side in until the highest RPM is achieved and then back it out slightly so it's not at full lean, then adjust the idle screw to lower the RPM.
