I'm glad you have a high bar for quality. Most people would have called it done on the first attempt.

Charles Christena as I watched I questioned the quality and when he tossed it in the bin I would have done the same, a good learning project but definitely worth doing again!! Very cool. 😎

When doing a complex contour, like in this case the hole for the oil filler cap (cylindrical contour), place the carbon cloth that lines the hole first, then place the carbon cloth for the rest of the surface. This way the cloth seam of the horizontal flat surface covers *over* the seam of the profile structure for the hole for the oil filler cap.
When re-using a skinning "mistake" as a mold for the part instead, you *HAVE* to strengthen it first. Either fill around the your newly re-purposed template mold with chopped fiberglass filler-putty or use something like polyurethane spray-foam to build up & strengthen the structure. You will be surprised how much better the resulting part will end up looking from simply making a slightly stronger mold.

Hey man that's definitely a worthy piece to hang on the wall of your garage or workshop! Anything you put time and energy into is worth holding onto unless it's literally junk and sir that carbon cover with minor defects isn't junk! Keeping my work around both fails and successful stuff helps me come up with other ideas to make me better! I can't wait to see your other work bro!

I suggest you could use the Forged carbon fiber to make an engine cover. It can full in those words better than carbon fiber cloth, especially to express the details.

He has a long ways to go. A part like this should’ve been made from a mold in the beginning, there’s too many details to do an overlay. I wouldn’t learn to make a part from him, being honest

    • @ECOLAPStudio
      @ECOLAPStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Doru Matei Hello, Buddy!
      I used standard epoxy resin.
Epoxy resin is vulnerable to heat as you care.
Muffler or engine parts should use high temperature epoxy resin.
However, when I repaired the carbon engine cover with standard epoxy resin, It had no problem.
So I used a standard epoxy resin.
I will let you know if it has a problem.

If you're in the states I buy the majority of my cloth and a few other supplies from fiberglast.com
      No affiliation.
Have been prepping track cars and fabbing up parts for a little over 20 years. It's a fun and rewarding process, especially making one-off pieces. If you are serious about producing parts on that level, be sure you have plenty of plugs and moulds of the pieces that often get damaged and take abuse i.e. splitters, undertrays, diffusers, etc. You can make a good living if you're dedicated and turn out quality parts. Good luck!

I personally see that it is necessary to remove the matrix from the original, moreover , from both sides , since there are also fasteners there , and then according to the technical process ! Ok so i have a important question. I am going to be doing this engine cover soon. SO instead of using the epoxy black gel coat, which makes the carbon stick, Can I use a spray adhesive instead?? I have seen people do it this way...

      Hello, Buddy!
      You have two options.
One is to mold the engine cover by making a mold.
Spray adhesive cannot be used when making molds.
You must use a gel coat.
      Another thing is skinning.
You can also use spray adhesive when skinning.
However, I think it is better to use gel coat than spray adhesive.
      I hope you helpful.
      Thank you for watching.

Yamaha Rapt or why do u want to use spray adhesive? As soon as u put resin to the adhesive it will move and lift, it does no good for holding carbon down for an overlay project

@@mlinecomposites1 Ok noted, New to this carbon laying etc so just experimenting. Have got the basecoat epoxy now and works perfect

Yamaha Rapt or listen If u want the fiber to stick without a spray adhesive use the resin itself, pigment it black or use black gelcoat the wait until it gets to B stage, another-words until it gets really tacky. Once tacky carefully place the carbon on top gently pressing it into the resin. Once you have it where u want wait until the next day to start coating it. This is all if u want to do an overlay👍🏾

should have used acetone on the paint to see if it would come off , I have made that mistake when making the mould, if the paint didn't come off you didn't need to sand the paint

hi, why you use the Pva after relase wax

    • @ECOLAPStudio
      @ECOLAPStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Buddy!
I used multiple layers of wax and PVA for easy demolding.
However, PVA does not have a clean surface.
It is recommended to use only release wax.

E for effort, bro ! Make another one with proper stand-off's for the attachment points.
I'm thinking 2 molds will be needed, one for each of the front & back sides. Then epoxy them together !

FYI a good chemical release agent and you would not have had to remove the paint from the cover. then you could have sold it. just use it as a mold.

Use more layers of both carbon fiber and resin/hardener for strength... assuming that was what was wrong.

      Hello, Buddy!
Gelcoat is very viscous and strong.
Epoxy resin has a low viscosity, so it cannot flow down and cannot be evenly applied to parts.

In your next project use fiberglass is cheaper to make molds. Take into account a good thickness for said mold.

      Hello, Buddy!
      Thanks for the advice.
I planned to make another fiberglass mold.
However, there are many other tasks, so the new engine cover work has been delayed.
If you wait, I'll make a good engine cover(Ver. 2).
      Thank you for watching.
