KEEMO KIMO

  • The melody of this comic tune comes from an early 18th century fife-and-drum tune often referred to as "Frog In the Well." By the mid-19th century, it had acquired a set of popular nonsense lyrics of a distinctly Southern flavor. Like many contemporary so-called 'plantation songs,' "Keemo Kimo" has the lyrical construction of a 'cadence-counting' piece, ideal for accompanying labor common to the plantation - or on the march. An individual would sing out the verse and the marching column or company would sing back the refrain en masse. Such songs, when sung on the march, often helped to keep morale high and make the 'work' (and miles) pass more pleasantly.

Hahaha, a tragedy indeed. All that's missing is Lovecraft's cat and some lesser-thans to make up the trifecta.

Joe if you read this I saw your interview on emerging civil war just recently and it was nice to hear about the band after so long. I have very fond memories of you all in Gettysburg. My father used to portray General Pickett and I remember you two having a few beers at O'Rourke's in maybe '06 or '07. I cant remember exactly. He passed away in 2016 but the bands music and my times in Gettysburg I will cherish forever. Thank you all

Yes ! I remember your dad, and I remember meeting him at O'Rouke's. Not so clear about the year, but I bet you're in the ballpark. I'm sorry to hear he's passed. If I recall correctly, he was having health issues back when I met with him. We corresponded more than a few times on Facebook and email. I liked him. May he rest in peace.

He had a heart attack so at least not a slow decline, so I'm at least grateful for that. I'm glad to see you're still beating the drum and I always look forward to your uploads. Keep on truckin and many blessings to you and the family!

We love your history and cultural insights to these historical songs. It’s not just a song, it’s history. The past may not be now, but it was. And people lived it. The highs and lows of war were real just as my day is to me today. You bring those times to life, if but just in these songs sung by many in the past. Long live the Bonnie Blue!
