this video just significantly increased the consistency of my Shoryukens. I just picked up SF5 and was having serious trouble doing the DP input from the left side from a crouch, now I get it almost every time. Thanks man
Omg thank you soooooooo much for the tip on how to Shoryuken. I just bought the venom arcade stick as my first stick and I thought I had broken it after two days of use, since I couldn't uppercut but this video has changed my gameplay a lot. Thank you kind sir, thank you
God this helped me so much! I know this is a really old video but I just got a fight stick and I'm in the process of learning fighting games (Street Fighter V). I tried to DP with Ryu and every time I tried I would get the DP but then it would cancel into Hadoken or Shinku Hadoken. (If I had meter). Now I can DP clean without getting any other ability you rock man! Thanks again.
Thank you so much for uploading this! I borrowed my friends arcade stick so I could see if I wanted to buy my own, and was confused as to why there was a "box" as you say. Which kept me from doing a lot of moves. This will really help out, and i'll give it a shot. Thanks again!
ah this video was extremely helpful. i am a new player with a square gate stick with no prior experience with fighting games or arcade sticks. i was trying to figure out how to properly execute this move and because of the square gate i was having trouble trying to do the motion, which is demonstrated as a down quarter circle up motion + execute button on guides. i found that if i rapidly hit forward directional down twice and then punch the dragon punch is activated. only that i couldn't consistently do it that way and didn't seem like it was the proper way anyhow. this way is much more simple thank you for sharing it.
If you want a DP shortcut for standing, another useful shortcut for standing is forward down-forward forward. You shouldn't hit diagonal down twice because it can lead to a lot of errors in inputs, maybe accidental supers, etc, so it's a bad habit to get into. When I switched to a stick it took me a few days to get used to it, I couldn't even do fireballs, but after a week or two I was back on track, it takes a while.
Wow! I'd hardly consider myself a beginner, and this information is still EXTREMELY useful! At first I seriously thought, "Isn't that kinda broken?" But then the square-gate is what Capcom wants us to use, right? Great vid! =)
Brilliant!! I've been struggling with the square gate lollipop sticks, now i get how those japanese players are able to get those insane high-low linkg combos. Can't wait to try this technique out. BTW a trick to getting the same Dragon Puch motion with a ps controller is to simply tap diagonal forward twice (df~df+punch). Great stuff.
Dude thank you for this....Just got my first fight stick, The ps3 madcatz se stick.......and Right when I was looking at the return policy on the receipt for it this vid comes along.....
Thanks for the tip! from sitting in training doing this I found to do two hadoukens for ultras you can just press down>downfw>down>forward and whatever attack. The square-gate (and stick in general) is takin some gettin used to but these inputs which use the corners and edges really are helpin me play, still a lot o practice to be done!
heh glad you showed me this, sort of had a different technique where id do the same thing f. down back and then forward but not down forward.. and sometimes that resulted in me pressing up -.- thumbs up
I believe the actual shortcut Capcom implemented for dragon punch motions is down forward, down forward. Since SF4stores/buffers motions even by pressing down back while crouching the game is still registering that first down forward motion you did in the video. For the new players out there test it out for yourself. Pick any character with a dragon punch type move then while standing just press down forward, down forward then punch or kick w/e button the move requires. I guarantee it will work.
I recently just got my first ever stick (same one as yours, I'm waiting for warranty to expire then I'll throw in some Sanwa buttons and stick). Anyway, I main Ryu and didn't realise these shortcuts existed, thanks a lot for the video :)
Very cool if you're crouch-blocking. I just got a HRAP V3 today and I also realized if you just hold the stick forward, slide it down halfway while holding forward and then back up, that'll work for the DP motion as well. It's a tiny motion so I prefer that one, but it's great to know ALL the shortcuts. Thanks!
its useful because you can land a dp from crouch position. crouch positition is a lower target for a jumpin, allowing more time before the jumpin actually connects with a characters body. this in turn allows for more time to react to the jump in, making jumpins more risky. also, this shortcut doesnt require the db motion. it can be done d,df,d,df+p.
Hey thanks for this, i've been using American styles sicks since about 1988 till now, i have an x-arcade sole stick that works pretty well except lag input, this tutorial has open my eyes to Japanese styles sticks, i hated them for the reasons you mention about, getting hung up on the corners.
This is a great tip. However, personally I've perfected my DP motion to be much quicker than the method your are suggesting. Especially when trying to pull off a combo. But I did discover something else. When your using a crouching attack such as Ken's crouching HP it can link into his DP. If you hold down/forward while you attack with the crouching HP just slide the stick back then forward again and the move registers. Works with all crouching attacks.
After watching this video I've discovered I can SRK by doing Down Forward, Back Down, Back, Forward, Punch. It feels much more fluid to me that way and I can seem to pop them out a lot easier and quicker doing them that way!
wow thnx for the trick! i feel like a doofus for not spotting this earlier! ty v much! (although i do play only charge characters, this would be useful for when i occassionally rep rufus/gen)
I'm fine with all gates. I own seven different sticks: three square, three round, and one octagon. None of which are better than the other. I use round on HD remix, square on IV, and octagon on everything else, which I don't play much anymore.
Hey man thanks sooo much! I have been playing SF for 18 years now, however I transitioned to a Mad Cats MLG TE 2 days ago and I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me or my stick. lol The quarter circle motion works perfectly on a controller, and it interesting how this movement renders the same move. BTW, Microsoft Store Online has the Mad Cats MLG TE for only 100 bucks, and they're going for nearly 300 and 200 on Amazon. It is a really solid stick, check it out.
@goodalwaysworks madcatz is an american company using japanese layout & component design. most players swap out the american parts with japanese parts.
There is another way that is similar to dashing. If you take the stick and move it diagonal down forward twice very fast, like a dashing move, it will allow dragon punch motion moves to come out. So DF,DF,P or K. Basically a diagonal dash then punch. Or kick. Whatever dragon punch motion. I didn't know about the method in this video, though. I think the video's version is much easier.
I wouldn't think so for games like Tekken 6. If anything a square gate might help when inputting diagonals, as you can feel those corners more. Octogates make using Shoto and similar characters in SF games a little easier. My advice would be to try out both square and octagonal gates and see which one you get along with better.
Correct! As stated before in comment #5 and its replies, DF DF is the input. But DF DF requires returning to neutral which means a standing input. This video's purpose is to demonstrate how to set up defensive and combo opportunities for beginners and new-to-square-gate users. Additionally it explains how sliding the bottom edge of the square gate resembles inputs for charge characters.
This also helped me with Bisons teleport on the stick. I still have trouble doing Ken , Ryu's and Sagats Ultra though. That down-right down-right is a pain.
yea... there's really no shortcut for Ultras that i've found so far... but this at least makes square-gate sticks a little more appealing cuz usually the "dragon punch" inputs are pretty important moves for the character
This is a cool trick and it's handy to know, but I do recommend learning the proper way for good practice. As a Third Strike player, I pride myself on proper execution cause this would never fly. I used to FADC with the double hadouken motion for the dash and then pressing all three punches (DP xx FA xx QCFx2 Ultra instead of DP xx FA xx fx2 QCFx2 Ultra). Although it was more efficient, it hindered my ability to properly execute other moves and setups.
wow man nice i couldn't pull this off to save my life i just converted over to stick and just got my jlf in i thought it was just my shitty stick wasn't able to perform it before but now i got it down to a tee
I like the idea which you can do the uppercut faster.but holding the stick forward in the middle of the combo is it kind of dangerous.when i miss the timing of the combo let say ryu will uppercut and you will get hit.if you block and do the 3* will be slow.but if you block and miss the combo you will still block and start the combo.
i have a hori fs3 and found your video very helpful I do have problem with 2xqcf/qcb (supers / ultras) It's my first ever arcade stick so I do need a lot of practice.
I believe your are misunderstanding the "charge character" analogy. I was just using as an example to show how a shoryuken is a similar "back and forth" motion as something like a sonic boom... But with no charge required.
HAHHAHAH you heard that?! that is actually my English Bulldog, named Rockson. he breathes like that (asleep or awake) when he is lying down... hahaha my bad.. anyways, glad to help!
@alienseye Um well when doing a combo like that I just normally do the 3 cr. jabs and then you have to be pretty quick inputting the SRK motion. I think for the SRK motion you can go foward, down, forward.. sometimes that works for me.
Personally, I've been playing on Japanese cabs with square gates for over a decade now and have no problems with shoto style moves (qcf, dp, etc.) It's all a matter of getting used to the gate on the stick.
good explanation :) just one correction to your ultra/super comment: its not entirely true. you do not have to input the full d,df,f,d,df,f punch in the first sweep you can leave out the f so all you need to do is: d,df,d,df,f punch. making it much easyer :) just a tip for everyone
good too know, i just found out a great way to combine both. Your way is from a crouch stance, which takes longer to do from a standing stance, since you have to go down, then back forward. i found a good technique combined with yours if you do like a Z motion (if you were on the left side in this case). i find it faster and easier if you are standing. let me know what you think?
Do you have an suggestions for easy fireball execution on a square gate? I'm having a hard time pulling supermoves that involve doing two fireball motions followed by a punch or kick button.
also, i try to explain that playing methods can be adapted from "charge characters"... like how combo-ing from crouch block with a shoto is similar to linking specials to ultras with a charge character. it brought my shoto-game and charge-game close together because my motions/muscle-memory are now similar... because of the sliding motion along the bottom edge of the square gate. More comments please! Let's keep the SF4 community growing!
What about an octogon user in SF4 and now SF5? I use mostly shotos. I can't get a dragon punch off reliably. I just had my first arcade stick for 5 days. I got the octo gate because I heard it's better for shotos. I can do Hadoukens and even the Hurricane kicks, but the dragon punch isn't reliable. Please advise .
Just trying to help out folks that are NEW to street fighter to help build the community, many of whom have not played SF on anything but consoles. Mad Catz and Hori sticks currently dominate the regular retail market, so this tutorial is for them. FOR THE AVERAGE CONSUMER (RETAIL STORES), THEY CANNOT JUST "GO WITH" AN OCTAGON GATE. This is to keep the casual players interested in the SF community... people who buy their controllers from stores like Gamestop.
I am too used to the SF4 shortcuts. When I go back to old games such as SF3 3rd strike and CvS2, I am having troubles linking the DP from combos involving crouching attacks. What's the old method of linking DP from crouching attacks such as crouch forward?
Whaaaaat? I was completely unaware of that. Is there a website where you can buy the parts? How do I get this going because i'd love to convert it to an octo.
Could you recommend me a gate? I'm playing only 3rd Strike.. and Main Urien (Charge) and Akuma, so I suppose I have a dilemma? But your Tutorial was helpful, thx
This only works on SF4 for some odd reason And things that suppose to be easy like some chains and stuff sometimes are hard to pull off as you might have experienced from doing the Trials ..
You can do it from standing, but that defeats the purpose of the shortcut. Going from neutral to crouch-forward is an unneccesary input. I am trying to explain that Capcom changed the MINIMUM required input is DF, DF+P. So my video shows combos starting in the DF position... Since the first required input is DF, you have already input it being in crouch-forward.
This short cut is good for beginners but it should be imperative that they learn how to do it the right way. It just takes practice, tons of practice and you'll eventually get it..
I actually found this out myself just fuckin' around with Viper in training one day. I still stick with the original f,d,df motion though when playing. And qcf x2 motion for supers and ultras I find to be a fuckin' nightmare on a sqaure gate, esp when you're on the left side of the screen.
this video just significantly increased the consistency of my Shoryukens. I just picked up SF5 and was having serious trouble doing the DP input from the left side from a crouch, now I get it almost every time. Thanks man

AWESOME tutorial! I didn’t know it had changed for SFIV; which I didn’t play much 😝 Thanks buddy!
jus got my tournament edition s. and was havin mad trouble wit da square. u helped me out alot. ur the man
Thank you so much man, I've only been using my arcade stick for SF4AE (I was a tekken player) and this really helped with my square gate :D
Thanks a billion! My Hori Fightstick 3 had been really pissing my off with SSF4. My DP motion moves are way more consistent now!
Thank you so much! All this time i was trying Forward - down - forward with my stick and it and it was so difficult! I'll give this a go now!
awesome video dude this really improved my stick playing.

Thanks dude! I was almost about to change to an octo gate, I think I will try the square more.
Hey thanks for this, i've been using American styles sicks since about 1988 till now, i have an x-arcade sole stick that works pretty well except lag input, this tutorial has open my eyes to Japanese styles sticks, i hated them for the reasons you mention about, getting hung up on the corners.
I just diagonal down twice, and I get my nice little shoy in the air.
I'm gonna try this though. It seems like it might be a little more reliable.
Great techniques videos - this is something TH-cam needs more of! More please!

thanx man made it easier 4 me jus bought a fight stick and that was the only thing i had trouble on

Pretty neat tips. Just got my fight pad yesterday.
oh man. This blew my mind and made my Ryu game so much easier, cheers.
Thanks for sharing this tip mate. Has helped me out a lot!
Nicely done, brother! Thanks for the video.

Wow great video man this is going to crucial for me once i get my stick since i play ryu as my secondary and am learning rose but vega is my main
I've tried the square gate but I am so used to octagonal. I've ordered an octagonal gate online for my Mad Catz stick.
Both SE and TE sticks are square gate from the manufacturer.
Hmm, I think I'm getting myself a Hori EX2 soon.
This will probably help me a lot. :)
yea... there's really no shortcut for Ultras that i've found so far... but this at least makes square-gate sticks a little more appealing cuz usually the "dragon punch" inputs are pretty important moves for the character

A VERY good video great upload im subscribing man
I hope you don't end up wasting your money.. I found the square gate ruined my experience.. so I sold mine 3 days later.
i like the snooring in the background :)
wow man nice i couldn't pull this off to save my life i just converted over to stick and just got my jlf in i thought it was just my shitty stick wasn't able to perform it before but now i got it down to a tee
good deal, man....looking forward to our battle, bro
Yo this is epic saved me a lot of Time thanks

I do have problem with 2xqcf/qcb (supers / ultras)
It's my first ever arcade stick so I do need a lot of practice.
I believe your are misunderstanding the "charge character" analogy. I was just using as an example to show how a shoryuken is a similar "back and forth" motion as something like a sonic boom... But with no charge required.
Hey shinobixtc, don't suppose you could do one for full-circles? I finding hard to pull of Zangiefs full circle moves. Cheers
Wow, I cant believe I didnt know about this, thanks for the tip
HAHHAHAH you heard that?! that is actually my English Bulldog, named Rockson. he breathes like that (asleep or awake) when he is lying down... hahaha my bad.. anyways, glad to help!
@alienseye Um well when doing a combo like that I just normally do the 3 cr. jabs and then you have to be pretty quick inputting the SRK motion. I think for the SRK motion you can go foward, down, forward.. sometimes that works for me.
when your holding crouching forward you only have to slide to the neutral crouch position then back to forward, not all the way to crouching block
I went from square to round to octo back and forth & finally all I use is square.
Personally, I've been playing on Japanese cabs with square gates for over a decade now and have no problems with shoto style moves (qcf, dp, etc.) It's all a matter of getting used to the gate on the stick.
Yep. They are getting restocked everywhere. TE and SE.
good explanation :)
just one correction to your ultra/super comment:
its not entirely true.
you do not have to input the full d,df,f,d,df,f punch
in the first sweep you can leave out the f
so all you need to do is: d,df,d,df,f punch. making it much easyer :)
just a tip for everyone
good too know, i just found out a great way to combine both. Your way is from a crouch stance, which takes longer to do from a standing stance, since you have to go down, then back forward. i found a good technique combined with yours if you do like a Z motion (if you were on the left side in this case). i find it faster and easier if you are standing. let me know what you think?
Only a few locals in-state... possibly FInal Round next year if I can get some time off from work..
As previously stated in the comments, the only input required (confirmed by Capcom) is: DF, DF+P
I think you need them. Steve was telling me how he laid the smackdown on you the other day :D
God. I'm wearing headphones and was freaking out. It sounded as if someone was right behind me, breathing heavily.
Do you have an suggestions for easy fireball execution on a square gate? I'm having a hard time pulling supermoves that involve doing two fireball motions followed by a punch or kick button.
Yeah me too. Have you figured something out?
curupa66
Still having trouble?
BlackHairedGoo n
I got myself an octo gate, so no.
great work and thanks for the helpful video
also, i try to explain that playing methods can be adapted from "charge characters"... like how combo-ing from crouch block with a shoto is similar to linking specials to ultras with a charge character. it brought my shoto-game and charge-game close together because my motions/muscle-memory are now similar... because of the sliding motion along the bottom edge of the square gate. I got the octo gate because I heard it's better for shotos. I can do Hadoukens and even the Hurricane kicks, but the dragon punch isn't reliable. Please advise .
forward down forward punch
this is very hard with Abel, if you that motion, sometimes "Tornado Throw" will come out instead of "Falling Sky"
Just trying to help out folks that are NEW to street fighter to help build the community, many of whom have not played SF on anything but consoles. Before, you just had to be fast to link specials. During the kick animation, complete the full notation for a special move.
I am too used to the SF4 shortcuts. When I go back to old games such as SF3 3rd strike and CvS2, I am having troubles linking the DP from combos involving crouching attacks. What's the old method of linking DP from crouching attacks such as crouch forward?
I find Z motion easier in any situation. Forward, Down, then Cr. Forward = DP
Nice find though, I'll haev to try this out later
thanks m8. this helps a good bit. Cheers!
Whaaaaat? I was completely unaware of that. Is there a website where you can buy the parts? How do I get this going because i'd love to convert it to an octo.
Great stuff, very helpful! Thanks!
Awesome, thanks for the tip man!
I use a similar technique. Hold down, and slide right twice, essentially D + DF + D + DF + P. Just another way of doing it.
Could you recommend me a gate? I'm playing only 3rd Strike.. and Main Urien (Charge) and Akuma, so I suppose I have a dilemma?
But your Tutorial was helpful, thx
This only works on SF4 for some odd reason
And things that suppose to be easy like some chains and stuff sometimes are hard to pull off as you might have experienced from doing the Trials ..
Oh, I see. Thanks for the answer mate.
SO HELPFUL u sir are a genius!
On my pad I accidentally found out that double inputting the down right diagonal also let's you dragon punch.
You can do it from standing, but that defeats the purpose of the shortcut. Going from neutral to crouch-forward is an unneccesary input. I am trying to explain that Capcom changed the MINIMUM required input is DF, DF+P. So my video shows combos starting in the DF position... This might sound harsh, but if you can't do the dragon punch motion on your stick i think you should sell it.
