You forgot to mention Kindle basic is 109 USD with ads, and 129 USD without, bringing it the same price range as Kobo which is without ads. Kobo Clara BW is waterproof, yellow lighting Carta 1300 screen vs 1200 HD on kindle. Kobo has more screen contrast than Kindle, blacks are more black. Also Kobo has a night read mode, making the Kobo Clara BW a no brainer

kindle is a tad lighter. By night mode do you mean dark mode? Kindle has dark mode.

100% agree on all points.. plus, Kobo's are repairable. Love that. also, F' Amazon and their ad pushing BS. Kobo wins in my opinion.

Kobo’s text is much sharper than Kindle. I love that I can borrow an Overdrive book directly from the Kobo.

The new Kindles are bad for sideloading epub files. Even Calibre can't fix those book covers on new generation Kindles. That alone makes me lean more towards the Kobo.

Do you think Kindle makes it difficult for users to transfer their books out of their ecosystem? Like a strategy move?

@@EInkUnpluggedDefinitely, that’s their attempt to control their customers. And since the Color was an utter fail their job is harder!

Since I often use “mini” bags and backpacks, I need something smaller than the 7” Libra Colour or Paperwhite. Which one between the current Kobo Clara BW and the Kindle basic would be better? ((Keep in mind I’m 85-90% a Kindle girl, the bulk of my ebooks collection is on Kindle. I’ve only started using Kobo a few months ago))

There are many ways to go about this. Kindle has DRM and Kindle formats, which prevents other e-readers from recognizing it. So if you are planning to switch over, we need to go over this hump. It is convenient to have one platform to have everything, not to mention Kindle, the most book collections. You can always keep both, but you would have to know ahead of time what you want to read that day, like having a physical book. In summary, you get the most value for your money if you buy Kobo because of its screen and versatility. I wish I could have a clear answer. However, there's so much to think about when I do not know the entire story of what makes up Lucien Sabre.

@@EInkUnplugged Sorry, I didn’t explain myself well. ☺️ I don’t plan to switch ecosystems and transfer my Kindle collection. The smaller Kindle/Kobo would be a **secondary** on-the-go device to keep in my bags (which as I mentioned include small-size models where a 7” device doesn’t fit) - at home I already have a Libra Colour and I plan to get a Kindle Colorsoft soon. I would like to get both the the smaller Kindle and Kobo if I could but, in addition to not having the funds for that, I only need one device to carry with me (and having 4 e-readers is a bit too much, I think…not that 3 is much different LOL).

@@LucienSabre When you said 4 readers is a bit much, I envisioned the time I had 4 dogs. Now that was much! Haha, If I were in your shoes, I'd get the Kindle BW since you will have most of your books with you (80%). But if you do not mind purchasing extra books (but then again you mentioned funds), then I'd go with Kobo. Either way, the wise thing to do, in my eyes, is diversifying, kind of like stocks. You will have both worlds at your fingertips. If Kindle goes out of business, then you at least have the ebooks you purchased from Kobo.

@ Yeah, getting both would be awesome. 😚 Sadly I do not have the funds for diversifying (at least at the moment) and, while I do plan to buy a few more ebooks on Kobo soon, the library size and above all the price makes the basic Kindle the more sensible choice to my eyes right now….so I’m probably getting that.
Thank you so much for your help and useful input. Happy New Year. 😘😘
