Inside a Scroll Compressor

  • Bryan shows how a scroll compressor works by showing what's exactly inside of one.
Sometimes, people will say that a malfunctioning or underperforming scroll compressor has "bad valves." However, scroll compressors don't have "valves" in the traditional sense; reciprocating compressors have suction and discharge valves that work with the pistons.
Instead of having a piston (or set of pistons) inside the compressor shell, a scroll compressor has two scrolls. The top scroll is fixed (stationary scroll), and the bottom scroll moves and is called an orbiting scroll. The orbiting scroll doesn't actually spin as many people think; it oscillates and uses more of a side-to-side motion to compress the gas between the scrolls.
The scrolls are metallic, so oil lubrication is important to keep them quiet and prevent them from wearing out. There is also a discharge check valve on the stationary scroll. That valve opens and closes, which prevents the refrigerant from going back into the compressor during the off cycle. If that discharge check valve fails, you may hear the compressor run backward in the off cycle.

Good information for the noitall tech... Rotary is confused with the scroll.
I have had bad/sticky scroll check valves out of the box..sometimes after a few cycles, the hot oil and vapor mix frees the valve but life expectancy is shorter than factory part..being a former Quality Control tech in manufacturing..to save costs, manufacturers may send an item back to a 'requalify' process that may change pumping characteristics or capacity by a fraction..re machining a mating surface or replace the electric motor, but still be within useable tolerances.
Keep up the fine videos Bryon..I share to the new guys coming in as the seniors leave the work force.

Point to note. Not all compressors have a "built-in" (discharge) check valve. (E.g. Danfoss, Mitsubishi)
Many systems have them installed externally on the discharge line.
So some scrolls truly have no valves of any kind.

Is there any moving part that can fall off its position during shipping? UPS or FedEx may put it down during shipments. I am wondering if it is safe to buy it online

So if I pressurize a unit with a scroll compressor I have to add the nitrogen through the suction side first?

I am suspecting that when you charge a copeland scroll with liquid through high side while under vacuum causes internal damage with the result being equalized pressure while running....If so why?

Do you share your process checklists like you had with compressor changeout?

    Please subtittle indonesian.
In Indonesia there are a lot of technicians but they don't understand English, might be able to find it translator.
    I will recomendation this account.
    Thank you.
