In reply to a couple of comments, reading aloud might be problematic for learners of English who don’t yet pronounce all their words correctly. In that case, reading along (or shadowing) while someone else reads aloud, could be a good idea.

Hello from Thailand Luke! I do agree with you that shadowing is a good method for practicing pronouciation. It would be nice if you could make a special episode that you read a story for us as an orinal story as you normally do in your short story episode and then you have another section that you pause after each sentence (or a bit of sentence) so we can repeat after you. As I listen to your podcast while driving, it is impossible to press the pause botton by myself. Thank you in advance for your consideration.😊
Ps. You are my first (and favourite) youtuber I left my comment!

Hello Luke, I am a spanish speaker.
Before internet, there was difficult to hear a foreing language, so I studied written English by myself. Today I have a very hard problem: when any English speaker talks to me I've problem because I have never heard many words even I know it in written mode.
Now I have to beging to study from zero.

    Hi Luke
I am a doctor from India and i have been suffering from depression and Ocd for the past 25 years.
For people suffering from OCD and depression concentration can be a very big issue .They are never in the present moment. I can definitely vouch that reading out loud helps you stay in the moment and helps form memories .

Bullying in High school ,parental separation and stressful medical profession has only compounded the matter

❤ great episode🎉Comment from the future...Reading out loud has been the norm for centuries! Only in the last Millennium the silent personal reading took place. 😮Let aside the fact of a diffuse analphabetism the power of the reading was well known and recognized. Thanks a lot teacher Luke for reminding that . Take care and carry on

    Hi Luke,
Firstly, thank you so much for making these high quality episodes for English learners around the world!
Answer to your questions at the end:
    1. I did read the article aloud at the end and it took 15 minutes to do so. Felt more confident and relaxed towards the end. The words came out easier.
    2. What you discussed/ the article you shared was so inspiring that I decided to read out loud an English article everyday (10-15 minutes). Apart from enhancing memory, I believe this is also a good exercise for muscles around the mouth :-) so when it comes to real conversations, I might have better/ quicker reaction and can speak out long sentences more natural.
Thanks again and have a good day/ night.

I remember reading out loud when I was a student, but when it came to non-academic reading, I always preferred silent reading. Thank you for this thought-provoking article and your comments on it. Indeed, there are two modes of reading, each being right in the right place. My husband and me are elderly people and in summer when our grandchildren come to visit us we do a lot of out loud reading with them (in Russian, which is our mother tongue ) taking turns. And as an English teacher I also use this method substantially.

One of the most important thing I’ve discovered in reading outloud is that it helps a reader shape his mouth by prononcing a huge ocean of vocabularies every day which help the reader’s mouth become as that of a native. It is like buying a new shoe which one needs to wear it every day to fit his foot otherwise the shoe will hurt. Reading outloud is a good way to get your mouth use to saying words easily and naturally.
in section 7, where the paragraph started with ” Writers and translators (read- in the past tense, because the paragraph the entire text was written in the past tense) drafts to themselves to hear th rhythm and flow…”
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and thank you for your time to teach us these great vocabularies. You are a great teacher. Daniel from Morocco
