  • Growing guide for the Lady Palm (Rhapis Excelsa).
I owned my plant for 4 years plus and in this video I share my experiences and what I've learned over that time.
The Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa) is a popular houseplant cherished for its elegant appearance and resilience. With slender, fan-shaped leaves and dense foliage.
This slow-growing palm tolerates low light conditions and adapts well to various indoor environments. Its compact size makes it suitable for both homes and offices. Lady Palm's require occasional pruning to remove old or damaged leaves.

I’ve had one for 3 years now. It’s suddenly sprouting bumpy shoots out of the top now. Are these seeds? Flowers? What do I do with these?

Why is mine turning yellow i dont water much until needed 🤷‍♀️should I change soil?

    • @ourhouseplants
      @ourhouseplants  8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

Could be a number of things, unfortunately. Overwatering, Underwatering and also extreme sunlight can all cause it. Thrips (or another pest) can also cause the leaves to yellow prematurely. Changing up the soil is unlikely to fix the yellowing unless you can work out the original cause.

Thank you for the feedback 😊. As for pests. I did have a mild case of thrips. They didn't do much damage and I got rid them then pretty quickly. No other issues!

Could be a while yet! 🤣. These are some of the slowest palms to grow. But if it still has signs of life I'd keep going with it. If it's Spring where you are a lot of plants start to grow again now.

Agreed - I’ve had my eye on one of these for a while and they are surprisingly tricky to track down here in the UK. I recently managed to buy one from a palm nursery here in London and tbf it was pretty reasonably priced too compared to some of the online houseplant retailers.

Glad you found one! I actually got mine years ago from an ASDA (Walmart) of all places. Have only ever saw them in very large houseplant stores otherwise. It's a shame as they're super indoor palms and deserve to be more popular. Enjoy yours.

Hello, just watched your video. so first thank you!
I have a Rhapis fir about 2 years. A year ago I began to see that it's leaves became less green. like lighter and not dark, good green, as it should me. I gave them iron fertilizer a month ago, and still havent seen a sagnificant imptovment. The plant gets enough light and rhe ground is moisturized. I can I solve this issue and get a healthy dark green leavs??
    Thank you!

Hi! It's hard to know why this is happening, but it could be a lighting issue. Potentially too much light? Does the plant get some full sun hitting the leaves? Plants in darker spots will almost always have darker leaves. That's why mine is as dark as it is!

@@ourhouseplants Thanks for the feedback , friend! actually it dosent get direct sunlight at all. I put him near the window so it is shaded , but still get a lot of light during the day (but not direct sunlight). If I could upload an image to here you could see it, but I dont see such option. You think I should put him in a much shaded spot?
There is a lady palms at me neighbors' garden, they get lot of light during the day, but not directly and they look great with dark green....
      please help me 🙏🙏🥲

I'd love to see a photo - You can add them to the article about this plant on my website - www.ourhouseplants.com/plants/lady-palm-rhapis-excelsa . Meanwhile, a few other ideas that may not be related to light:
      - Potentially try a more standard houseplant feed. Iron should only be a trace mineral for most plants, and definitely for houseplants.
      - Is it all leaves / fronds going lighter or only the new ones? If newer, then that's normal. They will darken up in time.
      - Check for any pests just in case. Doesn't sound likely but without a photo to better see the lightening I can't really be more specific.

Just found a lady palm at a nursery about 4 feet tall with many suckers after searching a while very exited! Even experimenting with palms indoors such as the dwarf sugar palm (arenga engerli) and coconut palm they have been indoors for about a year and surprisingly are growing very well.

This sounds like a great Lady Palm to have found. Hopefully a good price and yours will do as well as mine has over the years.
