    Iv had my plant for maybe 5yrs and last year was the first time it re bloomed. It gave us 2 shoots. It is July now and one shoot has lost all its flowers. Should I cut it off or wait until the other shoot drops all the flowers? Should I cut them all the way down or leave a inch?😊

    Hi I have my fern in low light right now, I bottom water about twice a week and I repotted it 1 week after I got it. Maybe I shouldn’t have but I noticed now that the whole stem and leaf will just drop and about 7 of them have dropped and the leaves I notice will be yellowish if they do drop. I live in Texas so I’m not sure if it’s not humid enough inside my home.

    • @peachshakes

      And by drop I meant they completely fall off.

    • @ourhouseplants
      @ourhouseplants 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It sounds like a watering issue. Perhaps too much or not enough. I don't generally like bottom watering unless your particular setup requires it. It can be tricky to know if you're giving the right amounts. That said you did mention you repotted it. If that was very recent that could be the cause too. What sort of potting mix did you use? Much much bigger is the new container?

    • @peachshakes
      @peachshakes 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ourhouseplants Hi thanks so much for responding. The container is not too much bigger, maybe a bit deeper and the potting mix I used is miracle gro potting mix , looks like the most basic one.

    • @ourhouseplants
      @ourhouseplants 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@peachshakes That all sounds good, really. It could just be slight overwatering and adjusting to the new environment. Excessively low humidity can react badly with these ferns, but it will have to be super low. Sometimes miracle grow potting mix can hold a little too much water so "overwatering" is what I'm leaning towards at this point based on what you've said.

The Ferns are collected, clipped, and stored in freezer to soften, we then twist the leaf to create Lei we gift for celebrations. It has a very delicate, sweet woodsy fragrance. • @ourhouseplants
      @ourhouseplants 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! Someone asked this before, so I'll just copy and paste my reply, hope that's okay and helps you. - The stems will generally grow upwards by default, but you could use something like string to keep it from growing upwards and you can gradually train it into shape. Search "Espaliers". It's a little old-fashioned but the principle is the same. Essentially, you want to control the way the plant grows. However, it will take a long time as these plants don't grow overly fast.

    What do I do if mine is super tall and top heavy, the plant itself tends to lean and it won't stand up on it's own unless it's leaning on something.

    • @ourhouseplants
      @ourhouseplants 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There isn't much you can do at that point. But here are a few ideas. You could remove / cut back the tallest branches (the tops can be propagated. Check out my recent video to see how th-cam.com/video/kM2rEgTy9jE/w-d-xo.html ). If you dont actually want to lose any of the height, then you can create your own DIY supports with bamboo and string/wire. One of mine is very wobbly too, so it's up against a wall for support which works, if that's an option for you. The only other thing to check is that it's not actually loose in the planter as it may be rocking around because of that. But a too tall plant it is a good thing! You've grown something massive that people would love to have!

      Hi, you can always post photos in the comments on the article on my website - www.ourhouseplants.com/plants/cuddly-cactus-cereus-jamacaru As for what you've said though, I think I understand / can picture it. Without roots, that will make it much harder, but once the end has "dried" out a little. Maybe 48 hours. You can pot it up into normal potting soil and keep moist and warm. There is a good chance, if it takes, it will grow new roots within a month or two. It won't work every time, but at this point, there isn't anything else you can realistically do.

      Hi! It's hard to know why this is happening, but it could be a lighting issue. Potentially too much light? Does the plant get some full sun hitting the leaves? Plants in darker spots will almost always have darker leaves. That's why mine is as dark as it is!

      I'd love to see a photo - You can add them to the article about this plant on my website - www.ourhouseplants.com/plants/lady-palm-rhapis-excelsa . Meanwhile, a few other ideas that may not be related to light: - Potentially try a more standard houseplant feed. Iron should only be a trace mineral for most plants, and definitely for houseplants. - Is it all leaves / fronds going lighter or only the new ones? If newer, then that's normal. They will darken up in time. - Check for any pests just in case. Doesn't sound likely but without a photo to better see the lightening I can't really be more specific.

    • @ourhouseplants

      Too much water, too much light and old age are the normal reasons. The leaves won't last forever, perhaps a few years. As long as you have roughly the same number of leaves as when you first got the plant, it should be fine.

    I bought a 15 inch Mount Everest about 2 months ago. It's one stem with an offshoot. It was so top heavy I put in bigger pot with cactus soil. Was doing well but recently a leaf started to shrivel. I watered and more leaves started to shrivel. Succulents don't like me but I really like this plant. Do you have any advice for me? The water goes through the soil quickly when I do water. Too much water? Not enough? Make the soil slightly heavier? Something else? Thanks.

    • @ourhouseplants
      @ourhouseplants หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sometimes cactus soil can be VERY free draining. The Mount Everest is a succulent, but I do find it's more of a thirsty plant. Potentially, your mix is draining too quickly. I have a best potting mix guide for succulents over on my website which could be helpful - www.ourhouseplants.com/questions/what-is-the-best-potting-mix-for-succulents I would perhaps pull the plant from its pot and have a look at the roots to check it's not a case of root rot. If there are NO roots at all, then that would explain the shrivelling. Obviously it could be a number of things, but based on what you've written, I'd say the mix is draining too quickly.

      There are two types of Cereus Jamacaru. One is generally spineless like the Cuddly Cactus and the other has spines. This one is less commonly sold as a houseplant, but I have seen sellers growing it as a large outdoor plant in some warmer regions of the world. Maybe yours has got mixed up. You can still grow it as a houseplant in exactly the same way, just be careful as it obviously isn't "cuddly" if it's covered in spines.

    • @ourhouseplants
      @ourhouseplants หลายเดือนก่อน

      It can be. If it's more like water then it's guttation. Usually an early warning sign of slight overwatering. If it's more like sticky sap then 1) It's either going to be a pest somewhere on the plants, but you should be able to see them, or 2) It's normal and is down to extrafloral nectaries. Common on Philodendrons and is generally thought to be attractive to ants so they help "farm" the plant and keep it clear of any pests.

      Glad it was helpful. Trying to grow it sideways will take loads of work and time in my opinion. Growing it into a question mark, even longer! The stems will generally grow upwards by default, but you could perhaps use something like string to keep it from growing upwards and you can gradually train it into shape. Search "Espaliers". It's a little old-fashioned but the principle is the same. Essentially you want to control the way the plant grows. However, like I said at the start it will take a long time as these plants don't grow overly fast.

      @@ourhouseplants Great idea thanks! Going to plant it indoor with a large window too hopefully it helps in growing sideways. Gotcha gotta be extra patience with this one hahha. I'll report back in a decade if I succeeded 😌

    You read my mind. I took 6 leaf cuttings from a Curio ficoides that wasn’t mine but didn’t get any stem. Four failed and two got eaten by slugs whilst they were failing. I need to buy one and take cuttings from that.

    • @ourhouseplants
      @ourhouseplants หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I have way less success with just leaf cuttings. It's almost 100% if you do the stem approach as per the video. I've propagated this plant at least 10 times now. Always works. Give it a go you should have similar results to me! Let me know how you get on.

    Coppertones snake plant stay in bright indirect light area growing more fast than in low light.

    • @ourhouseplants
      @ourhouseplants หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup exactly. Generally, the more light you can give your plants, they faster they will grow. But they will cope with lower light if necessary (at the expense of slower growth).

    Hi! I brought a 25 year old dracaenas tree and so in love but had it for 4 months now and leaves have started turning yellow and falling off 😭😭 would really apreciate some advice if possible!?

    • @ourhouseplants
      @ourhouseplants หลายเดือนก่อน

      It maybe adjusting to it's new home. Some yellowing is normal too. Mine will lose a lot at certain times of the year. As long as you can see new growth at the top it's probably okay. You do need to worry if the stems feel mushy (strong sign it's been overwatered and rot has set in) Have a feel at several points of the canes and judge. Fingers crossed for you.

    This plant is one of my absolute favorites. Do you have any tips for getting the stems to grow thicker?

    • @ourhouseplants
      @ourhouseplants หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do you mean thick like my plant, or thicker still? I think the main factor for healthy stems is really good bright light. Full sun for a few hours each day (when it's shining of course!) And feeding occasionally.

    You're right about the label being wrong - it's a Limifolia. I have one that I bought last August that is developing nicely and just starting to produce offsets. It will take a several years to grow to the size of yours though - nice plants guv.

    Thank you! Very informative. Just bought one. It’s getting filtered southern light from front door but it’s on 2nd level of split entry home if that makes sense. So far it’s got new growth and looks happy. I’ve not had any success with ferns so glad to hear this guy is a little tough. 😊

      Happy growing with yours! Your placement sounds good, just mointer for issues and move it if you think light is to blame. I think they're the easiest fern I've ever had. Hopefully in a few years you'll say the same.

    Been on my wish list for so long! Finally got one and apparently in Ontario, Canada they always get brown tips. We think it’s humidity issue, but IDK. Thank you!
