  • Even with good care in the form of keeping the vehicle interior clean, seat tracks on cars and trucks that live in the "salt belt" states and provinces often show some rust, as shown with the 2020 GMC pickup ones here.
This rust is purely cosmetic of course, but is in a highly visible area. The good thing is, some simple detail work can make the seat tracks look new again.
0:19 Remove plastic end caps if fitted.
0:30 I like to remove the bolt as well for a complete job.
0:54 If rust is minor (no peeling paint) wiping with a rag will be sufficient for clean up.
1:03 There is likely some dirt, grease etc. on the end cap and bolt head. Give them the Castrol Super Clean "purple power" treatment and set aside for reinstallation later.
1:14 I used gloss black rust paint and a 1/4" Testors brush from the hobby supplies. This way masking requirements were minimal, consisting of (for the inboard seat track) a small piece of cereal box cardboard with a slot cut in it.
1:34 Spray paint can also be used, it will require additional masking to keep the overspray off of interior surfaces. For this basic work truck, a brushed finish was adequate.
    2:40 Reinstall bolt...
    3:07...touch up its paint...
3:22...and snap the plastic end cap into place. One seat track complete!
3:29 Outboard seat tracks are often rustier as they are exposed to more of the weather and moisture. Paint was lifting in several places, sanding with 180 grit paper smoothed the finish to an acceptable degree.
4:02 Plastic trim piece on outside of seat rail required a different, L-shaped cardboard mask for painting.
4:16 Otherwise, the paint/install bolt/paint/reattach end cap process is the same.
    4:35 Much better appearance.
4:45 This pickup is a good example of a vehicle which carries only the driver a majority of the time, as a result passenger side seat tracks see much less of the elements and are less rusty. They are still in need of a touch up of course, and the procedure is the same.
5:35 Total time start to finish for this specific project was approximately 1-1/2 hours although a good portion of that time was taken up with taking video segments and still images. The entire job start to finish could easily be done in about 45 minutes working straight through without video and photo stops, and is a good investment in time for a much improved appearance. No more rusty seat track ends!
