He may no longer be the undisputed number one, but he is still one of the best guitarists in the world. Although ... I don't really know anyone who plays better, and only a few (very few) who have even reached his level - with this combination of technical ability and musical nuance. Most of them were his students at some point. It's a real shame he didn't play more Bach.

Evangelina Mascardi is clearly a master in her own right. And the question of whether Bach should be heard on guitar at all can be asked at any time. But did Bach write works for lute? He wrote works for "Lautenwerck". But "Lautenwerck" was a keyboard instrument that sounded softer than the harpsichord, with a lute-like timbre. Is that lute music? The question is controversial among music historians, but playing practice has long since decided, and with it the question of whether the lute pieces are also "allowed" to be played on guitar. By the way, if you need proof that guitar versions of Bach's "Lautenwercke" need not fear comparison with the lute, I recommend the latest recordings by David Russel for OMNI on-location.
@@sheole5165 I love Bach on the guitar, I just prefer Pepe's interpretations of Spanish and flamenco. Maybe he would be great with Bach as well. He has the requirements for fine ornamentation and beautiful phrasing. I'll check out your recommendation.. thanks
