Something about this song and the blue in Lava Reef 2 was the perfect transition to the finale of Sonic and Knuckles...this was the turning point....love it!
Definitely fits the context. You're approaching the end, where everything will come together. The music brings about a feeling of not knowing what's to come but knowing things only get harder from here.
It feels like your so damn close to the end. Everything is coming together. Enemies become friends, Eggmans endgame becomes clear, and the sense of tension builds as you see everything you need to defeat, but it’s so intense that you don’t know if you can, but you go anyway.
There's just something... so special about this song. After defeating the act 1 boss, the lava cools, and you run upon a nice blue, sparkling level. After grinding through half the game to get all the chaos and super emeralds, hearing this theme makes you reflect on how far you've come. From a jungle, to an underwater city, through a highly defensive airship, to a lava filled cavern. Realizing this, it gets you very excited knowing that the game has almost reached its end, and the music lets you know that the final showdown is on its way.
I always liked how act 1 music felt so organic, as if you really were in this volcanic crater. Then act 2 comes along and the lava freezes and your inside of robotniks subterranean launch base. The music reflects that with a much more electronic sound. God I love this game.
I loved the background in this particular Act of Lava Reef, like how the crystalised platforms would glow in several animated colours. This theme seems to build around the general atmosphere of the Zone. Good times. Proud fan of Sonic the Hedgehog's CLASSIC DAYS for almost 15 years!
i agree but mania had a different thing going on with its stage. in the original, its basically an atmospheric level and sort of like its a crystalized holy sanctuary. remember, the music plays every time you get a special stage in the second half of 3&k. and lorewise its nearby the hidden palace made by an ancient race holding a master emerald. in mania its become one of eggman's bases and its sort of a mechanized shadow of its former self. the music is super similar when you see how different the tone stage has become, but the electric guitar suits the new stage much better. the music being similar in mania sort of reminds you of what the stage used to be like but its differences suit the new stage better. also i think the electric guitar makes it feel like its such a vast area whereas in the original it felt smaller yet more mystical. also in knuckles' route you see that eggman even fucked up hidden palace they're both good but serve different purposes for pretty different versions of the level
takes me back, used to play this game for hours! Best music in the game, this and Ice Cap zone. It's weird how when you do Hidden Palace zone with knuckles you just run down some steps to a teleporter, you can do the whole level in less than 10 seconds lol
This is the PERFECT music for Lava Reef 2. You're nearing the climax of the game...so close, yet just out of reach. Racing through the act with this music playing makes it that much more magical.
The old Sonic games were so great. And no, it's not because they were 2d, it's just because the quality of them were so good. I really hate the whole 2d makes a Sonic game good by default and 3d makes it bad by default because Sonic Adventure is proof a 3d Sonic game can be good. They just need to look at this game and see all the things it did right.
Hearing this ... I think ...may I live to see an animated series or a movie that refflects what Sonic was all about all the time ??? Hayao M. please... do it for the entire PLANET!!!!
I was born in 1999, and I grew up with these games. I still have them, only remaid on the gamecube since we lost the wires of our genesis when we moved :( This was probably my favourite track in the game. I don't know why, it always gave me this odd feeling...
For me, I was familiar with it as the Super Emerald Select music, and I would sit there and listen to it and relax, and there was no timer or anything. Then, I heard it in Lava Reef Zone Act 2, and that is when I realized that I was getting near the place where the Chaos Emeralds came from. And then I went into the Hidden Palace, and I knew I was getting even closer. And then I heard this: /watch?v=9WzE_9LZhAY&feature=related
With the exception of Sandopolis and Launch Base, Lava Reef Act 2 was probably the hardest stage for me in Sonic 3 and Knuckles. I always had problems with the spikes and fire streams strewn through the stage, and if I didn't have a fire shield for Robotnik, that fight was a nightmare.
I don't know I mean Sky Sanctuary is the place where all the real stuff starts. Well besides the Hidden Palace but that one doesn't really have anything in it that could be used for Generations storyline.
Sounds just as good as the first version. This one has two diffrent bass guitar strings in it, one being straight bass and the other being loose bass[you know the Seinfeld bass!]
Its like Ive always said. If we could get the guys who actually make the games on the same page as the guys who make the music then sega would be churning out pro sonic games nonstop! Not all sonic games have been awesome. All music however has been legendary!
Thanks for pointing out the obvious. That doesn't protect you from the bombs and the sub itself., so you could still lose it...and I'm talking about when I was 10 here! I wasn't necessarily a platforming whiz at that point in my life, so I was prone to mistakes much more than I am now.
You should try uploading one to see if it fixes the problem. One diagnostic factor is the fact that when the movie initially loads, if you fast forward to a more distant time spot that's still well inside of the red "loaded" zone, it will begin loading from that point, as if the video hadn't buffered to begin with.
@XXXAMSTORMXXX Well, it DOES help to grab emulators to play them on. That's how I still get my fix of old Sonic Games in the glory they were meant. ...Either that or to enjoy them as they should've been, such as playing as Knuckles or Amy in Sonic 1.
@imonthedeadly60 Nope, when lava in Terraria makes contact with water, it hardens into obsidian, not sure if it's the same in Minecraft, if so. Then both games are relevant here. Though I can see where you're coming at. Both games are very different, yet at the same time so similar.
Actually,to be honest, I did grow up with them. I pretty much grew up with whatever my sister had, and this includs her genesis, aswell as many other things. So I grew up with a genesis and N64 while my friends had Wii and stuff. Just because I was born at a different time doesn't mean anything.
@ThePikafan25 Heh, make that sixteen now =) I could still listen to this music all day. It just brings a warm feeling of when I was a kid. But, to me, I guess that shows that I somewhat had a childhood worth remembering. As cliché as it sounds. the Sonic the Hedgehog games on the old SEGA systems really provided some great, great memories. As of right now, I'm just hoping for the best with Sonic Generations.
it was epic when this music starts as the lava starts solidifying... why every music in this game is so immersive?? just awesome ^^
it's what MJ gave us as a gift in this masterpiece of a game ....

Somehow this theme always sounded sad and mysterious to me. The way the lava cools fro a bright yellow red to a cool neon blue was always beautiful.
YomiKAyomi it almost sounds like act 1 but isn’t act 1
@@pwx13 to be fair that can be said of all act 2 tunes
Bryan Liguori I know it’s dope
Same.
This calming music makes me forget how brutal the level actually is.
I always had more trouble with act 1 and breezed through act 2 lol
Something about this song and the blue in Lava Reef 2 was the perfect transition to the finale of Sonic and Knuckles...this was the turning point....love it!

The music and stage transition here was one of the highlights of the 16-bit era.

I know this isn't an ince level, but I liked to call it "where hell freezes over" lol. Very atmospheric song.

i just love how relaxing this music is.
Calm before The Siege
this song reminds me of waiting in the hospital when my Sister was born
shit must have been intense and shit
That's pretty badass man
It does sound like tense badass waiting music now that you mention it
Let's make an ice level with bad music, said no game dev in the 80s or 90s. Seriously, why do Ice-themed stages so awesome-sounding in these games?
+Lyubimov89
Ice?
Crystal.
That is not an ice level
+ Lyubimov89
Nah, the Hidden Palace Zone is more a crystal styled level.
"ice level"
Well ice cap zone also has an incredible theme
I loved the background in this particular Act of Lava Reef, like how the crystalised platforms would glow in several animated colours. This theme seems to build around the general atmosphere of the Zone. Good times.
Proud fan of Sonic the Hedgehog's CLASSIC DAYS for almost 15 years!
This song really feels like the calm before the storm, like this is where the adventure is about to get kicked up a notch. Beautiful.
Dude, I love your videos. Who says music needs words to be amazing, video game music for the win.
I actually prefer this over the Mania remix personally; the theme sounds much better when calm, rather than with a rockin’ guitar.
I agree. But I could see the duality as sort of an indoor-outdoor thing, like in Zelda BotW Hyrule Castle.
I like both 😐
i agree but mania had a different thing going on with its stage. in the original, its basically an atmospheric level and sort of like its a crystalized holy sanctuary. remember, the music plays every time you get a special stage in the second half of 3&k. and lorewise its nearby the hidden palace made by an ancient race holding a master emerald.

It's the voice of angels. That's why.
Dat calypso. This game had some genius thought put into the score. We all know the name of that genius now.
I love the Genesis, this sounds massive for a 16 bit machine
That's the power of frequency modulation!
This is one of those tunes that instantly plug me in to Divine ThoughtWaves. Thank you so much for extending!!

The bass tones in this one are amazing. It almost has an ECCO vibe to it
Why do I imagine fighting a super long gauntlet of bosses to calming music like this... Streets of Rage?
I like the bass to this music.
this level is basically calm before the storm
I love the Mania remix but.... you just can't force the original to be forgotten.
I HATE the Sonic Mania remix.

It’s so cool when you heard the mania version first then you hear the genesis version and find the comparisons.
I'm getting Metroid Fusion vibes from this.
FUCKING AWESOME SONG
Been playing Sonic games since Jan 1993 and never stopped since
This music reminds of the end theme to the revenge of shinobi.
[Hidden Palace Zone]
[Boss Fight: Knuckles the Echidna]
[Good Luck]
It's the easiest boss fight in the game, barely counts as one
I really like how this always gave me that you are almost there don't give up vibe
i lost so many rings ..but i didn't care because this song made me feel i was close to beating it.
Another reason why BGM and video game music is highly underrated.
Shit, this comment is old!
OMG‼️ I LITERALLY HAVE UNLOCKED A CHILDHOOD MEMORY AT 4AM 😌❤️✨
This is a very subtle tune for a lava level.
April 2016 memories of me listening to this

@Gindelbi I'm a kid, but I love the Genesis games, especially S3&K.
This song makes me really emotional for some reason...
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is easily my favorite out of the early Sonic series games. It even tops Sonic CD. I do love doing Time Trial on CD though.

Lava Reef needs a Sonic Generations remake, if they can make the music as good as they did in Sonic And Knuckles then it would be amazing.
