    I like to see the living room room set ups but rarely do the photos include the tv in the design….that is what I find tricky. The tv does exist!

    • @KristenMcGowan
      @KristenMcGowan  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Usually a family room/tv room is separate from the formal living room. Search family room for more ideas with TVs included

      @@KristenMcGowan That only works if you have two such rooms to play with or an extra room that can be converted into a family room. The majority of us do not have the luxury of extra space,Kristen. Something to keep in mind for future videos.

      @@KristenMcGowan This might be the case in the US, but in Europe most of us - if we’re not very rich - we have one, hopefully big, room for coming together and for the tv. Many times the dining area is also included. Houses in Europe aren’t as big as in the US.

    • @1stepcl0ser
      @1stepcl0ser ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I’m always amazed at how BIG everything is in the US and how a lot of Americans really do seem to have a lot of space and so many rooms! Obviously not everyone lives like that in the US, but it is often portrayed like that. When I hear „powder room“, „extra bathroom“, „guest bedroom“, „conversation area“ I’m always like…?? What? Where? 😂

    These are definitely great recommendations! I'd just like to say one thing about 'the positions of the 2 sofas (3 seater + 2 seater) next to each other in the living room': very often, the reason why some people have their sofas not facing each other is because they have only one small living room with a TV, therefore, the sofas will be facing the TV - which is much more comfortable for people to sit down and watch a programme together.

    • @Kimberlyk12
      @Kimberlyk12 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thats literally the conundrum we are going through right now! Put the TV on the best wall, but then all furniture must be turned everytime people come over to watch a movie, or put it on the not so perfect wall, but then the majority of the seating faces the tv😵‍💫

  • @isadoradurso9491
    @isadoradurso9491 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    on the other hand, when you are not entertaining, which is the 90% of the time it is awkward to look at an empty
    sofa as a focal point. as for the additional space it is only usable when you lie down watching tv , not when people are sitting chatting. sectionals are just another trend and are not suitable for all spaces, you call a mistake what is a reasonable and popular choice of many designers, let alone home owners.

    I have so many struggles with our condo’s super tiny living room, BUT I recently completely redecorated it and I do love it more. Now it feels more cozy and prettier but our couch isn’t even big enough for all 5 of us. The set we had before was enough but it was too big for the space. There’s truly no room for anything other than maybe some bean bags or puffs, but that’s going to make it looks so cluttered, and the kids will just argue over who gets the couch lol. I have to leave room to workout so I bought a coffee table that wheels out of the way. Best decision ever. Thanks for all the tips. Love them all and someday hope to implement all the things 🫶🏼

    It would be great if you could do a video on some alternative layouts such as when it's possible to have a couch back to back with another couch therefore dividing a living room into 2 zones ~ I ask this in terms of doing alternative layouts in very unusual type spaces. For example, our home is loft -like and it's in an ancient industial stone building with enormous wood beams and 360° windows.

    I have the couch set in the loveseat and 3 seater. I disagree with it being a mistake. I know the current trend is to mix it up but in a few years that will be outdated and the pendulum will swing again.
    I style the couch set differently because of the scale with mixed cushions and throws. On the loveseat the throw is vertically positioned and on the 3 seater, the throw is horizontally positioned.
    Adding an armchair/accent chair that is in another design style brings balance to the furniture layout.

    • @Kt-cn2rq
      @Kt-cn2rq ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True if stick with neutrals like brown ,grey black for basic furniture items you can make it cozy with accessories( lamps, bedding, pillows table cloths etc). Choose what you a a individual like not by trends. Someone told me my kitchen too French style but I was going for bakery style look since I make cakes so I took as a compliment.

    • @gardenjoy5223
      @gardenjoy5223 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree with you. She overstepped. It's not 'odd' at all. She was odd herself. I found it arrogant even.
      It looks just fine to especially nice and you can place a side table in between with a lamp on it.
      Most people have small living rooms and having two different colors or style of sofas in that, would make the space look cluttered most of the time.
      Indeed, we also have two armchairs to complete a U-form. Great for conversation and it looks cozy and well balanced.

    In practice the “extra corner seating” in the sectional gets only used when you are alone at home… When you have guests is not practical. You are facing each other the same way as with two sofas cornering each other, but you have only one or two armrests. I’ve noticed that we want to lean against the armrest and everyone wants to seat by the armrest.
    For this reason I’ve got a rid of my sectional and opted again for two sofas cornering each other…

    Absolutely love all your videos!! Your last point about balance made me think.. What if one of your main furniture pieces is too high (for ex. 1 side chair) compared to the rest of the main furniture in your living room, but you dont want to buy another sidechair? Are you saying that maybe adding a tall lamp, a tall plant, or a wall art on the other side of the room where the smaller sidechair is located can recreate a sense of balance?

    What if we have an L shape small living room and no budget nor a sectional? That’s my case, I didn’t like it from the beginning, but it was what we could afford.

    I’d love to see him this works in smaller spaces that just don’t have the size needed to put much furniture at all and how to determine what works in those spaces when the space is non-descript to begin with.

      I'm not a designer but this is what l have in my home:
      * Ceramic vessel with a wooden lid as my bedroom bin under the bedside table.
      * I have a bench seat at the foot of the bed which is a little lower than the bed.
      Very comfortable layout and the bedroom doesn't look cluttered.
      All depends on the size of the bedroom.
      Mine is medium sized.
      * l used to have a window air conditioner, if you need it, keep it.
      * In all of my bedrooms, l have both sheer curtains and sun block out drapes for night. Great functional combination.
      * l have a bath mat in the bathroom strategically placed for the main purpose of stepping onto a dry surface rather than step onto a towel.
      In my opinion, rugs aren't needed in the bathroom.

    Hi Kristen, what a great review and ideas in living room. We just made that mistake by buying (recently :-() two same sofas instead of sectional. Unfortunately, we can't use your advise to put them against each other. I can see that our room needs a more help, so maybe I will look into other videos you have and find some help how to fix the look in the living room :-). Thank you for this video, wishing you happy holidays!

      You haven't made a mistake. Bring in an armchair/accent chair with different elements (colour, shape, size, design style etc) and your layout will look great.
      BTW l have a couch set (3 seater & loveseat) and l think my lounge/living room looks balanced, cohesive and great 😃😃😃

      We have 2 identical sofas with an end table between them, too. The focal point in the room is a fireplace with built-ins along the sides and a television above the fireplace. It is awkward to watch TV from the sofas across from each other, perpendicular to the fireplace. At least one has to be parallel with the fireplace wall so at least someone is comfortable and doesn’t get a stiff neck. I agree with her in principle but it just doesn’t work for us. If the TV wasn’t part of the equation I would switch the furniture layout.

      I, too, have 2 sofas butted up to each other with an end table in the corner. This works for us, as we have a corner fireplace with the tv on the wall next to it, so both sofas see the fireplace, one sofa is directly facing the tv, and the other is perpendicular to it. My husband likes to watch tv with his legs up, lounging. I’m a side leaner, legs up, so I need to have an arm for that, and sectionals don’t provide one on one end. I also like to have a place to put my drink while I’m leaning sideways, so I don’t need drop my legs to the floor to get if from the coffee table. Yes. I’m lazy that way. We have a sectional in our basement, and the only thing the corner is used for is to throw all the pillows in that came with it!

    I wish I could get some design help from you for furniture placement for a great room with a diagonal corner fireplace, a sliding patio door, a wall open to a dining room, and a wall separated from the rest of the space because of being used as a walkway to get to the backyard through the sliding patio door. It is a design nightmare. I also forgot to mention that we have no den or family room so there must be a space for a 65 in tv.😢 if you ever wanted to challenge and showcase your design chops, then I have the space for you
