Agree. I think it's because they are still passionate and interested, yet aren't nervous and completely new like their freshman album. In fact, freshman albums usually are forgotten except for a rare band like Sum 41 or Simple Plan.
First album, third release. Though the band counts Safety as their first since that's been the first with the lineup they've had for most of their career.
@@TWProductions90 It is officialy their third album. They dismiss the other two because they were amateurs and Aaron does not like it, but it is their third ALBUM.
@@HiroBrownit’s good, but I think Fever was better, and certainly more original. Pretty Odd was a bit derivative and The Beatles worship a bit much. Still a great album though for what it was and I remember enjoying it when it came out.
I think many sophomore records are when the band or artist really starts to find their sound, great examples i can think of: Ride The Lightning, Peace Sells, Aenima, Toxicity, Late Registration, Good Kid Maad City, Leprosy, Around The Fur, Voodoo, Leviathan, The Bends, Thriller, Post, Demon Days, Come my Fanatics, Flood, Dirt, None So Vile, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, The Mantle, F#A#⁸, Oceanic, Everything is Fire, Prowler in the Yard, Sleep's Holy Mountain, Unquestionable Presence, We Are the Romans, My arms, Your Hearse, Nevermind, Downward Spiral, Loveless, Run the Jewels 2, and many others
I’m glad you came out as a 311 fan, man. There’s a large community of us and everyone’s super welcoming. You may have some questions about how things go, but don’t worry you’ll get it.
Underoath' second album is cries of the past, which sounds similar to their debut but with more black metal influences and keyboards. Some try to call it an EP cause it has 5 songs, but those songs are so long (all over 7 minutes, the longest being 11 minutes) that it gives cries a longer runtime than most of their subsequent records
Satisfaction is the death of desire is the best hatebreed album, every last track is 10/10- some of the best breakdowns ever, I love the production and recording, awesome lyrics, just hands down one of my favorite albums ever made.
Waking The Fallen is one of my definitive albums of all time. Not A7X's most concise effort, of which City Of Evil takes that crown, but absolutely blows their first album out of the water! Title intro/Unholy Confessions, Chapter Four, Remenissions, Desecrate Through Reverence, Eternal Rest, Second Heartbeat, Radiant Eclipse, I Won't See You Tonight, Clairvoyant Disease, And All Things Will End. A God-Tier sophomore album in my opinion.
@@_Arugula_Salad_ Badass! If I had more friends who were into A7X at that time, I'd have gone! As it was, my now ex-wife, her brother, and several of his friends from school rented a van and drove to Milwaukee in 2006 to see them on the City Of Evil Tour at The Rave, where they played with Coheed And Cambria. That is amazing that you met The Rev, that is quite an honor. I miss him, and his Presence in the band.
Thinking about Hybrid Theory vs Meteora, I think it’s a two part story of discovery and mastery. It tells me something that the band moved on from this sound immediately after Meteora.
Always excited to see Linkin Park coverage. Meteora and Hybrid Theory are definitely S tier! Love those albums. And. Think your analysis is spot on. I appreciate them for different reasons, depends on the day, but probably give a slight edge to HT.
Fall Out Boy's From Under the Cork Tree might be my favorite sophomore effort. They even poke fun at the idea of a sophomore slump on the album. Love that record.
Fall Out Boy should be on the next sophomore album list. I love straight-up pop punk of Take This to Your Grave. They improved their songwriting 100 fold for From Under the Cork Tree.
Music for the Jilted Generation by The Prodigy...no, it's not rock, metal or punk but it's a stellar album and still their best. This is when they transitioned out of their candy rave phase and started to incorporate darker elements of electronic music paired with trip hop and grunge. All round banger and loved by music fans everywhere. Ready to die on this hill... If you haven't watched their full live set at the Phoenix festival in '96 (readily available on TH-cam) I suggest checking it out. You won't be disappointed. The amount of energy is mind-blowing. They damn near nearly caused a riot at the end 😂
11:25 ngl I'd love to see Finn do a video on 311. I listened to them and I really like their mix of clasic 80s rap and the pop-punk sound. Kinda like a 90s version of Beastie Boys.
In the last debut album video, Finn said MKFR was Slipknot's first album, but in this video he ranks Iowa as their sophomore album. Make up your mind Finn!
meteora is my favorite LP album. songs on Hybrid theory and Meteora are both top tier. but i really like the way the tracks flowed on CD for Meteora. it was just an experience.
Still Remains’ “Of Love & Lunacy” sophomore record was way ahead of its time, extremely unappreciated to this day. Would love to hear your take on the record? Great video as always PS Demon Hunter’s “Summer of Darkness” record is also S tier for its time, imo
My ranking no one asked for: Significant Other (Limp Bizkit): C Pretty. Odd. (Panic! at the Disco): Not a big Panic! at the Disco fan but I'd probably give it a B or C, haven't listened to it. The Changing of Times (Underoath): Haven't listened to really any Underoath tbh but their newer stuff kinda sounds like POST HUMAN: NeX GEn mixed with Sleep Token, I'm a much bigger fan of the former and the last time I listened to a Sleep Token song was a Drumeo video like 2 months ago. Also the snippet in the video is F tier. Dude Ranch (Blink-182) Top of A or Bottom of S Into the Unknown (Bad Religion): F Perseverance (Hatebreed): Ngl I haven't listened to a single Hatebreed song. Snippet was great, playing was very clean for a hardcore album. Waking the Fallen (Avenged Sevenfold): A Meteora: S Iowa: S G N' R Lies (Guns N' Roses): B but only because Patience carries. People use the gamer word usage in One in a Million as a way to diminish one of the most beautiful rock ballads ever written a few tracks prior. Hot take but separate the art from not only the artist, but also the controversy. I say this not to defend the usage of the word, but that one track with a lot of controversy shouldn't affect anyone's opinion on another track free from it. Of the ones I've listened to: 1. Meteora 2. Iowa 3. Dude Ranch 4. G N' R Lies 5. Waking the Fallen 100% gonna check out Hatebreed later.
@@PedroHenrique-mj1mn Yeah I saw that on the discography page when looking at some of the tracklists for refreshers/to see if I recognized any songs from albums I hadn't listened to, on some of these, but I included the 3rd because it was the album brought up, not the actual 2nd album.
The worst example of this ever has to be The Human Abstract's second album. First album came out swinging in the prog metalcore scene. Still holds up as an absolute banger. Then their main songwriter left and their second album was so bad it's kinda unbelievable. Even the band members hate it and wouldn't play them live anymore after the album cycle.
Yeah, Nocturne was and still is phenomenal. The original vocalist and A.J. , the lead guitarist/composer, both left and then we got that second album that had one decent track. I genuinely tried to like it but it….idk weird? That’s how I feel anyways
I don’t even like 311 like at all but that first album they put out is damn good. It improved my drumming a lot. Some of the sexiest grooves I’ve heard.
Waking the Fallen being in the B tier is one of Finn's worst takes in my opinion 😂 Besides melodic Death metal bands like At The Gates, waking the fallen and Alive or just breathing basically defined that era of early 2000's metalcore, otherwise I actually agree with pretty much all of these, good video!
Outside of this channels' paradigm but worth a mention. Rainbow's second album Rising is just transcendiary and legendary. I mean Dio performing at IMO his greatest on Tarot Woman, Starstruck, etc. Let's not forget the absolute masterpieces of Stargazer and Light in the Black. God dang to have the Philharmonich Orchestra for Stargazer and that solo by Blackmore, geez it's still astonishing to this day. This is the album that many a-power metal band got influence from. If there was ever an album that superseded the first album in almost any way, it's Rising by Rainbow.
I thought I was the only one that knew Underoath’s “Act of Depression”. It’s a short album, but I revisit quite often. Lots of breakdown variety and very enjoyable to listen to, give it a listen!
My personal favorite sophomore album is Deja Entendu by Brand New. Went from a generic sounding pop punk band to one of the best post punk bands ever imo.
Ultimate S-tiers: Nevermind, Dirt, The Colour and the Shape, Crazysexycool, Led Zeppelin 2, Like a Virgin, Zen Arcade, Paul's Boutique, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
Paul’s Boutique? Wasn’t that their third album? BB first released Polly Wog Stew in ‘82 when they were hardcore punk, making Licensed To Kill their second album
I remember seeing Hatebreed a bunch of times in Meriden Connecticut in 1993-94 at a place I used to work called The Hanover House Jamie and the guys were always cool and put on a hell of a show for a room of 100 pll at the 18+ shows they used to put on I'm happy they broke out of Connecticut and went Worldwide ✌️🧐😎🤘
I've heard you mention the vandals, but I didn't know you had them ranked so highly on your personal list. I was very late to them, didn't get it for a long time but it sort of just clicked for me at some point. I guess when I started to appreciate punk that didn't take itself so seriously.
I think it depends on the individual, regarding Hybrid Theory and Meteora, I like Hybrid Theory more because we got reanimation but Meteora had popular songs.
LIES was fire . Second best next to AFD . Plus it felt more like an album than an EP to me just because it had as many songs as a full length . And I loved every song on there ! The acoustic version of Your Crazy was fantastic !
I may also be out of the discussed genre at times here but.. My picks for S Tier would be: Siamese Dream, The Bends, Nevermind, Dirt, New Bermuda, The Colour and the Shape, Vs, Leviathan, Origin of Symmetry, Rated R, Downward Spiral.
Conceived Through An Act of Violence! I served a guy last year after I saw Slaughter to Prevail who roomed e a deathecore band in CT, who were friends with Hatebreed
Perseverance isn’t really Hatebreed’s sophomore album. Prior to this was Satisfaction Is The Death Of Desire (my favorite), and prior to that was Under The Knife.
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA and I believe some of the songs found a home on SITDOD. I have them both on CD, didn’t know it was a 7”. Then again, I haven’t played that album since high school….when Hatebreed played tiny venues up here in NH.
Where You Want to Be by Taking Back Sunday! Took what they built with Tell All Your Friends and created big emo anthems we still all sing along to today.
Underoath's second album was Cries of the Past (tier S+++ IMO) but u can consider Act of Depression+Cries of the Past to be like the big one first album of them lol
Next Sophomore Album Tier List could include: Poison the Well, Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Korn, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, Terror, As I Lay Dying, Bury Your Dead, Every Time I Die, Atreyu, The Story So Far, Four Year Strong and my personal favorite LEGEND (LGND). LGND's 2nd album The Pale Horse is a certified absolute masterpiece as far as metalcore/deathcore whatever genre you wanna call it goes, imo
If 3 dollar bill yall had better production and mixing it would be A tier for me. It's pretty nostalgic. Deftones sophomore album is S tier for sure. I love Adrenaline but the evolution from it to Around the Fur is unbelievable. I don't count the demo they used to hand out at shows as their 1st album either lol.
This feels like the youtube version of Now Thats What I Call Music. Im psyched for fourth cds, they are unexpected, either a flop or rise back up, and tend to cement a band where there relevance is. Btw, no one mentions Many More. Ive seen then on conpilation cds for 30 years
there is no better sophomore album than Siamese Dream - The Smashing Pumpkins. Almost perfect the entire way through, and somehow their third album Mellon Collie was still considered their best work.
Rap album - Lupe Fiasco's "The Cool" is probably my fave sophomore album. His debut was insane but he went up a notch on The Cool. Nu Metal connection for clicks - some songs aren't even rap rap. "Hello/Goodbye" is basically an Industrial Dark Wave song. "Little Weapon" was produced by Patrick Stump. Worth mentioning Mike Shinoda produced "The Instrumental" on his first album. Also has a Nu Metal feel.
I feel like Mansons Antichrist superstar has got to be mentioned the way it catapulted that band into mainstream success especially impressive when considering how dark and heavy that record is somehow it became a mtv staple and was unavoidable for some time.
Please talk about 311 sometime. Id get grief from my friends that were stoners for liking hardcore and metal and then the hardcore and metal friends couldnt fathom why 311 was my favorite band.

sophomore albums may be a band's best album on average
It’s like terminator 2, but sometimes the first album isn’t even terminator 1 in quality
@@TheOnlyPedroGameplays This analogy is incredible.
@@sluggernott thanks
Yup. A7X, System of a Down, and Trivium all prove this
Agree. I think it's because they are still passionate and interested, yet aren't nervous and completely new like their freshman album. In fact, freshman albums usually are forgotten except for a rare band like Sum 41 or Simple Plan.
You forgot your favorite band Deftones...Around the Fur is total S teir, naw is God Teir. Adrenaline was good but Around the Fur was amazing
311 fucking rules. You gotta do a full video on the main channel on them
Isn’t the Changing of Times Underoath’s third album? Their old stuff is so effing good, listen to it all the time
First album, third release. Though the band counts Safety as their first since that's been the first with the lineup they've had for most of their career.
@@TWProductions90 It is officialy their third album. They dismiss the other two because they were amateurs and Aaron does not like it, but it is their third ALBUM.
Yes, Cries of the Past is their second LP but Underoath disowns their first two albums.
It is, Finn got it wrong. Cries of the Past is their second album.
@PedroHenrique-mj1mn the band even says Safety is their second but claims it as their first.
Panic! Pretty Odd has a ton of good songs
Yeah definitely not full of bangers but more mature writing and musicality than Fever naturally
@@HiroBrownit’s good, but I think Fever was better, and certainly more original. Pretty Odd was a bit derivative and The Beatles worship a bit much. Still a great album though for what it was and I remember enjoying it when it came out.
@@ThinWhiteLuke you’re right. I just wasn’t into the Beatles that much until hearing this album again later in life.
Fact's no clue why people hate it it was during the time where kids were trying to get their generation into the Beatles
I personally love unholy confessions when Matt is singing the song live rather than screaming it. I wish they did another recording of it. 👀
Breaking Benjamin-We Are Not Alone
Chevelle-Wonder What’s Next
Both bands basically launched their career off their second albums.
Was jamming Dude Ranch today, great album so catchy :)
My favourite is The Jester Race. So much better than the first album, and possibly better than the rest of the albums.
I was in high school from 2000-2004 and the music was just killer the whole time.
Glad I got to seem them tour for the album, and meet them afterward, including Jimmy 💚
The comparison of Meteora and Iowa is just a reminder of how diverse nu metal is in the heaviness compartment
It’s top tier early 00s pop punk, with an emphasis on the Pop (which is a good thing for this genre). So nostalgic for me, I love it.
Underoath’s second LP was Cries of the Past.
Underoaths second album is cries of the past ope
In the last debut album video, Finn said MKFR was Slipknot's first album, but in this video he ranks Iowa as their sophomore album. Make up your mind Finn!
Images and Words - Dream Theater
Best sophomore album for a prog band ever.
Meteora and Iowa are S-Tier
Three Cheers by MCR was amazing
meteora is my favorite LP album. songs on Hybrid theory and Meteora are both top tier. but i really like the way the tracks flowed on CD for Meteora. it was just an experience.
Still Remains’ “Of Love & Lunacy” sophomore record was way ahead of its time, extremely unappreciated to this day. Would love to hear your take on the record?
Great video as always
PS Demon Hunter’s “Summer of Darkness” record is also S tier for its time, imo
My ranking no one asked for:
Significant Other (Limp Bizkit): C
Pretty. Odd. (Panic! at the Disco): Not a big Panic! at the Disco fan but I'd probably give it a B or C, haven't listened to it.
Dude Ranch (Blink-182) Top of A or Bottom of S
Into the Unknown (Bad Religion): F
Perseverance (Hatebreed): Ngl I haven't listened to a single Hatebreed song. Snippet was great, playing was very clean for a hardcore album.
Waking the Fallen (Avenged Sevenfold): A
Meteora: S
Iowa: S
G N' R Lies (Guns N' Roses): B but only because Patience carries.
Of the ones I've listened to:
1. Meteora
2. Iowa
3. Dude Ranch
4. G N' R Lies
5. Waking the Fallen
100% gonna check out Hatebreed later.
Except that The Changing of Times is not Underoath's second studio album. Finn got it wrong.
@@voidofhope6259 first and second albums are the same singer
Meteora is definitely one of my most listened to albums, it often occupies my car's cd slot
I don’t even like 311 like at all but that first album they put out is damn good. It improved my drumming a lot. Some of the sexiest grooves I’ve heard.
I am SOOOOO glad to hear you finally speak on 311! My absolute favorite band! #PNWexcitableones
Unless you were there, you'll never understand how amazing it was to be into 311 right before and right after the blue album dropped. Great times!!
Self titled Hatebreed album was way after Rise of Brutality
I saw Hatebreed with Slayer and Slipknot in 2004.
That show was absolutely insane.
I think Meteora sounded more radio friendly than Hybrid Theory.
That was the point of it
That’s not always a bad thing, imo they just sounded more polished.
Waking the fallen not being S tier is wild.
100% agree. This album for me becoming only better over the years and it might even be my favorite of theirs.
Never really listened “into the unknown “… but that snippet you played… probably the most interesting thing by that band, I’ve ever heard
Pinkerton, Nevermind, Siamese dream, Loveless, Morning Glory, The Bends, Three Cheers, Crooked rain, Doolittle, Probably some of these bands peak.
LIES was fire . Second best next to AFD . Plus it felt more like an album than an EP to me just because it had as many songs as a full length . And I loved every song on there ! The acoustic version of Your Crazy was fantastic !
The screaming vocals on that underoath album sound like me trying to whisper scream in my bedroom when I was 14 lol
You should do a video about the Luna hicks, they were pretty unique.
I may also be out of the discussed genre at times here but.. My picks for S Tier would be:
Siamese Dream, The Bends, Nevermind, Dirt, New Bermuda, The Colour and the Shape, Vs, Leviathan, Origin of Symmetry, Rated R, Downward Spiral.
Underoaths second album is Cries From The Past.
satisfaction is the death of desire for me
Conceived Through An Act of Violence!
Under The Knife was a 7", don't be confidently incorrect
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA and I believe some of the songs found a home on SITDOD. I have them both on CD, didn’t know it was a 7”. Then again, I haven’t played that album since high school….when Hatebreed played tiny venues up here in NH.
Where You Want to Be by Taking Back Sunday! Took what they built with Tell All Your Friends and created big emo anthems we still all sing along to today.
I have seen all of your favorite bands live at least once if not two or five times and I can confirm you like good shit, Finn. 😎👊
The Changing of Times is NOT Underoath's second album. It's CRIES OF THE PAST
Underoath's second album was Cries of the Past (tier S+++ IMO) but u can consider Act of Depression+Cries of the Past to be like the big one first album of them lol
The Changing of Times was the first one released by Solid State/EMI Records, but it was the third one.
More 311 please! They are an incredible band
Perseverance was the 2nd album i ever bought, before that I was all about Buzzcocks and Stiff Little Fingers etc, absolute pivotal moment for me
Next Sophomore Album Tier List could include: Poison the Well, Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Korn, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, Terror, As I Lay Dying, Bury Your Dead, Every Time I Die, Atreyu, The Story So Far, Four Year Strong and my personal favorite LEGEND (LGND).
Ive seen then on conpilation cds for 30 years
It's a much smaller selection to choose from. A lot of bands don't ever make it that far haha
Underøath's second album is Cries of the Past ope
Cries of the Past is Underoath's second album, not The Changing of Times. You got it wrong, Finn.
there is no better sophomore album than Siamese Dream - The Smashing Pumpkins. Almost perfect the entire way through, and somehow their third album Mellon Collie was still considered their best work.
Two sophomore albums that immediately come to mind are Leviathan by Mastodon and Oceanic by Isis. Both absolutely incredible and influential.
2nd album from SOAD and Trivium are both GOATed
I am surprised you're a 311 fan. One of my favorite bands ever. I remember the first time I heard grassroots.
311?! Dude, I think the internet should punish you for not making a video about them! There's just too much potential in a 311 video.
Please talk about 311 sometime. Id get grief from my friends that were stoners for liking hardcore and metal and then the hardcore and metal friends couldnt fathom why 311 was my favorite band.
Fun fact the screamer in those Underoath songs is a Dallas Taylor
Iowa got me through depression in my late teens.
