  • Formerly titled "Rediscovering the Doctrine of Baptism", Meghan is joined by Todd McLauchlin to discuss the underlying roots of modern faith crises. Topics include:
    A different approach to why some leave the church
    Spiritual burnout
    "Starting Over" with our understanding of ordinances and covenants
    Joseph Smith's teachings on baptism and repentance
    A true broken heart
    Todd McLauchlin was born and raised in Portland, Oregon but now lives in St. George, Utah. He is married with four children. Todd was raised in the church and has been active my entire life, but in recent years has dedicated his life to studying and testifying about the gospel.

    We must take the Holy Spirit (it's not a haunting ghost) as our guide. I recommend that this basic principle of the Gospel should be a discussion as a podcast.

    Young couples have a different role now days from when I was young. I'm elderly now. Women now must work and or get an education as financial means to live is Paramount. Homes are so expensive and demands are huge. It is overwhelming the time constraints upon them. I'm elderly now and ill so I go to church on zoom. Sometimes it seems to me if they went to church on zoom to catch their breath at home is not such a bad idea especially if pregnancy is involved or new babies. I feel fulfilled going to church on zoom even though I miss the socializing. Church is in my home where growing close to the Savior has been wonderful.

      Daily study of scriptures, prayer to understand by the Holy Ghost. I also look to words of prophets but study their work not just read and by application or experimenting on the word.

      Hi Linda - so sorry there were elements of this that were discouraging. I know that is neither Todd's nor my intention. Was there anything specific that were harder to digest?

    He taught so clearly what’s plainly taught in the addiction recovery program which is a program of change that transforms so many men through the atonement of Jesus Christ. Most of the members don’t think they need this but they do, the 12 steps apply to all members as we all sin and fall short of perfection.
    His analogies are especially insightful. Thanks for bringing him on.

    • @lddisciplespodcast
      @lddisciplespodcast  ปีที่แล้ว

      I love this observation! Yes, I wonder what members of the Church would look like if we approached the natural man like an addiction to overcome - something the Savior alone can conquer! Thank you for sharing!

  • @cab9191

    Wonderful. The only issue I take is that it seems that often times having a WILLINGNESS to receive a remission of sins and to be born again is enough for water baptism… it doesn’t seem that it was always a requirement to receive that remission first. See Alma 7:15… Being in a state of true repentance and willingness to follow/seek God seems to be the prerequisite.
    This gives the two separate sacrament prayers more distinct meaning. The first prayer indicates “willingness” in the prayer. The second prayer no longer indicates willingness, but that we “do”, in fact, have what before we were willing to receive….

      Absolutely! Which we all can most certainly do more of! One thing I've learned this year is that almost none of what I thought I knew is complete or 100% true. There's much re-learning to be done.

    I don't understand how one can continue in the Mormon faith knowing about the past racism that was doctrine in the church, along with the sexism and homophobia. Even the tithing payment, it goes to proping up the church and not the poor. A small amount is paid to other charities not Mormon owned, this should be a red flag.

      Assuming everything you say is true,I have received a witness from the Holy Ghost that Jesus is my Savior,and that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the kingdom of God here upon the earth. That is all I need to know.

    • @stelladavis7832
      @stelladavis7832 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnfortney6016 And i think what you felt was a good feeling based on things the church teaches which you agree with, for example; You probably felt a warm feeling when they talk about family or a loving God, right? Could those not be just your mind sending an emptional response to you because you share common ground?
      Think of it this way: How did you feel knowing about the racism of the past in the chuch or the pologamy or how the temple used to have a suicide oath? I imagine you had a bad feeling but maybe would chalk that up to not knowing all things, or the church telling you it's Satan trying to influence you, etc? My point is the church will preach that feelings are only valid if they support their cause and feelings or what the church calls the Holy Ghost are not great ways to judge the truth or are at best subjective and prone to manipulations.

I believe it could grant some broader perspective on why the things you mentioned, all of which are horrible and inexcusable, do not define our relationships with Jesus Christ and His gospel.
