This model was built using a set of unknown second-hand wings which I recently picked up from a model show. I paired them to a fibreglass fuselage which I've had laying around in the garage for a number of years.
I wouldn't know how to build it or fly it, my experience with gliders being limited to those balsa models sold at grocery store checkouts when I was a child (why did they stop that?) Nonetheless, I found this video quite beautiful and uplifting. It completely elevated my mood, and suddenly I'm having a great day. Thank you for sharing this with us! Subscribed, of course. Also, reading through the comments, I believe I see a smaller percentage of trolls, detractors and general nastiness than I can remember on any TH-cam video. Watching this should be required for politicians of all sorts.
Another great video John. The big planes just have a more gentle and controlled way about them, this one included. Love the larger planes for sure. Thanks you guy's.
Wow it's just exactly like the balsa-wood gliders I used to get when I was a kid for 10 cents at yellowfront! And if you spent $0.15 you could get the one with the wind-up propeller and the rubber band!
My Dad grew up in the early 1940’s. He told me that he and his brothers used to get those gliders with the propellers and paint German and Japanese emblems on them, take them to the roof, put lighter fluid on them, light them up and set them free. He said they probably ‘shot down’ dozens of squadrons of enemy planes. 😆
Looks like about a 9000/1 glide ratio! LOLOL I love the vintage high aspect wings! I bet she would thermal like a buzzard if the opportunity presented itself! Beautiful lines, appeared to gracefully handle the wing overs, plus floats lightly but fast with good penetration. Very nice! Thank you for sharing!
After my brother passed away I had all of his and our dads handmade planes/gliders that I had no idea what to do with. The local KCRC group was kind enough to help me get their gear out and had people donate what they thought fair in exchange for the things they all needed. All of Dad's and my brothers old planes were rehomed and I got to watch many of them fly again before the day was over. This wingspan is about the size of the one my dad had built from a magazine layout that he liked. He was a draftsman by trade and was always drawing up his own blueprints and tweaking the designs. Very nice glider. I used fly one I made from kit off a mountain outside Caracas in Venezuela until it got whisked up into a cloud never to be seen again. Neat pilot flying skills.

I like the fact that we get straight to the flight. No backstory blah blah. Remember those balsa wood kits you could buy that were powered by a rubber band? As a kid, when I would get one of those to take off properly and fly well, I would be so proud. I can imagine how this feels. As others have posted, GREAT JOB! 👍

As always, beautiful plane & flight. But let's give extra kudos in this one to the videographer for the flawless tracking when the model is inland & out of sight of the camera. She (I presume your bride as usual?) had that model squarely in the center of the viewfinder as it emerged from behind the bluffs. Great anticipation - not an easy feat. Bravo, Ma'am!
Love it. There are some enthusiasts that glide by Waiuhinu, near Naalehu on the BIG Island, Hawaii. If you see them stop by, they are always willing to share. Aloha is the way.
I sometimes go to the Llyn flying event, was this at Hells Mouth, North West Corner, near the car park? When it works, that site is really good, and could be there all day especially with my Algebra, but cause the plane flies so good, its hard to land and just goes over the hill!

Many years ago as a kid I saw someone flying a smaller one off a cliff around a bunch of seagulls who didn't seem to care. Always stuck in my mind.
