    Im a former pro cyclist and now a psychologist, a lot of this is true to me, the use of the mind is most of why I did my first career. On a different topic, I despise things like Strava.

      @dougfitch3649 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lamar4333 Thanks for asking. I think it’s another way to distract oneself from the activity you’re actually doing. This is true at the time, but also afterward when it seems to promote absurd quasi-competitiveness. Reminds of when I’d stay somewhere training or racing and people would want me to attack their favorite hill and time it. Ugh. I might really enjoy Strava if I were touring because you could share with friends and family your adventure and show the pictures of specific places along your route. You could show how many calories you burned after your huge breakfast and the pretty mountains you crawled up and sped down. That would be a neat tool. Apparently there was some super douchbag in CA who was actually doping in order to be God of Strava. I never laughed so hard in my life.

      You don't sound like a psychologist at all. You need to relax. When you like strava for adventures, then do them, and post your pictures. Only compare yourself to yourself.

    Great lecture, really appreciate it!! Cycling is life. I got on 6 months ago and have gone straight with only 1 rest day per week. Not only did it facilitate loosing weight it also helped me get sober and become an overall happier person. I've also made so many friends who enjoy cycling. Its an amazing sport.. I wish i started earlier. I am in my mid 30s but great news is I was getting dropped by a 65 year old man this weekend, so looks like i have plenty of years left to get out and cycle more. Enjoy your rides!!

    The point that Jim makes between 40:15 and 40:56 during the Q & A session is absolutely spot on, and is something that, as an avid cyclist from Colorado, I have believed in for a long time. Despite being a little skeptical during the entire video, after that comment, I can trust that Jim is a REAL cyclist. The point is that - there is only so much that technology and can tell you about your performance and only so much that you can trust. Ultimately, you need to just listen to your breathing... your legs, your heart and your mind... listen to your deep inner soul and psyche... that will always be the best monitor of performance, and will always be the essence of cycling performance and is precisely why we all love this sport. Great video Jim. Much Thanks, - Greg

      +Greg Conroy Yes! I'm just getting into it. Using my Garmin/heart-rate monitor/cadence sensor... Strava. That's all great and I love checking the data when I'm done but even as a newb, I can tell that these numbers become the entire focus on some rides. My little trick is to have one of my screens that shows only the time of day and I'll switch to that one when I start freaking out b/c my heart-rate is climbing. Every now and then, I'll leave keep it there for the entire ride. Love how you said, 'Ultimately, you need to just listen to your breathing... your legs, your heart and your mind... listen to your deep inner soul and psyche... that will always be the best monitor of performance, and will always be the essence of cycling performance and is precisely why we all love this sport.' Cheers, -Ben

    I strive on pain. I start riding better 30-50 miles into the ride. There's that period or time when I hurt and feel weak and then I keep pushing and putting myself in more pain and I love it. My body starts working more and I feel more fresh then at the beginning of the ride. There's a hill, I attack it. Small bridge ramp or an actual climb, but I must drop everyone or at least keep up with the best. If I come back from a century at hard pace and there's a guy flying by me, I get on the drops, switch up the gear and catch up and at least try to stick with him, when I recover I take a turn up front. My potential unlocks when things get hard. I love the pain

    I ride a bit differently. I'm not interested in racing or winning or anything like that. The whole "winning is everything" mindset generates a great deal of needless pain, and suffering and disappointments. Everything becomes a challenge, something to beat, something to win against. But this whole mindset is based on negativity, on comparing ourselves to others, beating others, being better than etc. For example - beating the hill, overcoming it, fighting your way up the hill. But you're not fighting the hill, it's not your enemy. The hill's been there a long time. Actually it's pretty much indifferent to your desires.
    Instead of seeing the hill as an obstacle, something to beat, I see the hill as a friend. We're in this together. I even ask the hill for help. It's got plenty of energy locked up in itself, plenty to spare. I ask it for strength, for energy. And it works.
    You have a choice, you can make the hill an enemy, in which case riding up it is hard. Or you can make the hill your friend, in which case it's easy to get up.
    It's always a choice.
    I never get upset when I'm riding into a strong wind, either. I become friends with the wind. It's doing it's own thing. It has other priorities. It's not there to mess me up. I just ask the wind for energy, it's got plenty to spare. And it always gives me what I need.

      To add:
      How exciting is it to drive a car at 50km/h? Exactly, boring.
      Do it with a bike, every day, much more exciting. If you live in a town it is usually faster to ride a bike than take the bus/tram and often on par with taking the car. And NO parking issues.
      If you need to transport bigger stuff, home delivery is a thing. You rarely need it tho. Is it worth paying 300-500 euros per month just to be able to transport a coffee table once every 5 years? Pay 30 euros for home delivery!

The whole talk struck me as nonsense but a lot of people in the comment section seem to have the opinion that this was really helpful and inspiring. I just don't understand why.
    I was in Denmark a few years ago for the World Championships. They had an american doing the race commentary over the loud speaker and he was using similar if not the exact same colourful metaphors. I didn't understand them then and I think a lot of the Europeans were confused. We simply don't think like this.

  • @bellavia5
    @bellavia5 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    To develop as a cyclist you have to ride and ride and then ride some more . Keep on packing on as many miles as you can. That is the prime directive. A well developed set of legs and lungs will get you in the game. THE GRIND. You have to accept the fact that training and racing is a grind. The winner is the one who is willing to grind out more training miles than the next guy. Coppi- "Ride your bike. ride your bike. ride your bike".Contrary to what this guy says -confidence is NOT a skill-it is a state of being.

    • @youbetyababy

    • @bellavia5
      @bellavia5 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      youbetyababy Maybe. My point is simply this. If you want to be a competitive cyclist you have to put miles into your legs. You can apply all sorts of mindsets and psychological approaches but without miles in your legs -forget it. Even Lance and company -with all the chemicals -still put in many miles of training. Same as running.

    • @ramadanhasani

But there's too much obsessing about performance and stats, how fast, how many miles. I'm 70 now with many years of running behind me. It was never important to run fast. What this fool here failed to mention is the bike weights coming down as the primary reason why the new breed of "stick figure" cyclists are coming into the sport. 6.8 kg is a pathetic weight for a bike, I think even 10 kg is still light enough for anyone to race on, it's been done for decades. Now you have even riders using mountain bike gearing due to their pencil legs. Cycling has become a complete joke of what it was before. Move the bike weights to 10 kg and watch what will happen, many would not even race anymore. His "Psychology" relies on riders being able to use 6.8 kg bikes.
