sold Giant for 10 years of my life here(KSA) would go back to them in heartbeat. have 3 TCR Advanced SL ISP\s and a Propel Advanced SL ISP. the best bikes ive ever owned. when i joined Giant, i wasn't interested in riding something with a name like GIANT. test rode a TCR. was hooked. i have the original TCR Advanced T-Mobile(Majenta) "bands". she's a 2006 but can climb like a rocket. she weighs 7.5kg which is really good for a 2006.

Have the same frame and components in the 2018 KOM configuration. Light, awesome handling, and very comfortable on 100+ mile rides. Congrats on getting a great bargain.

Similar situation for myself, was in the market for a new bike and found a local shop in a different state that was selling a 2019 supersix evo in an unpopular color for $2000 USD. Ultegra comp., carbon seat post stem and bars, carbon wheels. Bike itself retailed for over $4200.

great video. Haters gotta hate. I noticed at 3:25 that the front brake open/close that allows you to remove the wheel was open, unintentional I assume. I descended Black Mountain in Canberra with that open. I wondered why the front brake was spongy, lol.

2016 TCR Adv Pro 0 (Dura-Ace, 6.6kg, with SLR-0 wheelset) £3800rrp purchased for £2500 in 2017. It had been raced for one season by the Giant shops semi-pro team and had been in a crash. The carbon was repaired by a Giant-authorised carbon repair specialist which meant the full lifetime warranty of the frame was upheld. Happy I went for it--has done 20k+ miles without a problem and opened my bike-fit eyes to the M/L which is perfect for me. Can still pick up DA-9000 spares for cheap here. Found full 52/36 crankset off a local triathlon semi-pro who sold it to me for £50 and my LBS had 9000 shifters in good condition for £100 going spare.

I sorta have the same story. I was looking for a road bike under 1500 dollar price range(us), and I stumbled upon a 2017 bianchi impulso. This bike was traded in, and had a full ultegra groupset, all under the price of 1300 usd. I love this bike to death, and I love to see a similar story to mine on TH-cam!

What happened to bike prices? In 1980 a top of the line Schwinn Road Racing Paramount with a hand built in America frame was $800, which is about $2600 in today's money, you can't even get close to a top of the line racing bike today for under 3 grand, today's top tier bikes are like 10 to 14 thousand dollars or more, for what's basically a plastic frame and two wheels, it's insane.

Nothing wrong with TCRs, great bikes! I've had 4 including the original with the Mike Burrows carbon aero seat post. I suppose if you're loaded and can afford a new $15000 F12 Pinarello, go for it. I picked up an SWORKS Venge frame and fork off Gumtree for $1200 (great cond.) from a young guy who'd just been offered a sponsorship from another bike co. I threw on respectable gear I had lying around and searched for Ultegra 11 speed components I still needed off eBay. And with a new set of Fulcrum Quattro wheels I also found online for $400, this amazing bike all up set me back around $2800 Oz (including postage for parts).

Scored a bargain recently myself. 2018 alloy BMC teammachine disc. It was a model I hadn't even researched, but it came up at my LBS for $700 under retail. It ended up meeting all of my criteria: threaded BB, alloy, disc, dropped seat stays, and best of all it is a size 57 so I didn't have to choose between a 56 or 58. Wheels are really heavy but that will just get me stronger for when I buy light ones next year.

CONGRATS on new Race Bike. ALL your Points are spot on. It's easy to get swayed by the latest & greatest.......and I have. BUT if we step back, keep our emotions in check (not easy at times) & take a balanced look, there are SO many Great Deals on Solid Frames / Bikes up and down the Price scale. It requires Identifying exactly what the Goal / True Need is, PATIENCE, networking (LBS, fellow riders, etc) and regular Searching.
There are so many reasons why from the Industry, LBS and Rider levels that make lots of Quality & Technically advanced (or less if you prefer) Bikes and Components available for the taking just as You did with the TCR. Sounds like You are still a set of Race Wheels short though(smile)

Funny story... I bought a 2016 Giant TCR leftover at my local bike shop. I bought it in the winter of 2017. Original price was $3400.USD
I got it for just under $1800 out the door. I changed out the tires for 25c Grand Prix 4000s,and changed the cassette for an Ultegra 11-32. Great bike under $2k!

Just went through the arduous process of choosing my first bike. Wanted an Aero bike ready for Triathalon in 2020. But also didn't want to spend a bomb considering that there's every chance I will hate the sport and sell it on eBay ;) After getting way too far down the rabbit hole, decided I wanted carbon everything and Ultegra. 2019 Giant Propel Advanced disc was picked up brand new for $3690 (couldn't find any second hand in my size) Am so impressed by everything you get for the money. When I was looking at BMC or Specialized couldn't even get anything close for the money.

Nice bike and nice pickup Cam. Bike looks great with those wheels. A new Giant SL carbon frame is now worth about $3500 on its own!
BTW I just sold my spare set of Giant SL1 carbon wheels including 2 spare tyres and couldn't get more than $400 for them, and this after 5 weeks on gumtree. So I'd say hang on to them!
    Cheers Peter

Hi Cam, you keep mentioning that you needed a bike specifically for road racing. Could you weigh in a little bit on what exactly makes the TCR better suited? If I remember correctly the allez frame was used in road races by pro continental teams.

Just a heads up if you're planning on swapping your carbon wheels around, the giant carbon wheels are great but they won't last with "other" pads. You probably know this already. But if you're using Black Prince or something with the enve you'll probably want to swap the pads with the wheels.

    Built a Chinese special.
    Mostly happy with it.
I only "compete" on Strava due mostly to work schedule. My fitness is down this year yet I've got numerous PRs. Some new KOMs (one of which I didn't even know about, previous King.. Chad Haga). I'm in my 40s.
All in (including custom paint) about 2000 USD with 105.
Devil's advocate... I shoulda bought an allez Sprint because I'd never built a bike before. Tools added some money but I lost a month of riding due to parts shopping/shipping/building/painting.
I'm going SRAM axs and disc next year or 2. I haven't decided on Chinese or used frame. Guess the used market at the time will dictate that.

Sick find Cam! I bought my first even road bike over a year ago which was a used TCR advanced 1. How much better is the frame on the pro version TCR that you have than on the entry level models? I don’t race so not super concerned with the difference but I am just curious. Was thinking of buying some Hunt 50/50 carbon wheels to upgrade from the stock wheels. Any thoughts on these?

Great vid and shows what you can get if you have the time and patience to hunt around.
Just thought I would share a similar experience I had with my 2017 Madone. I was hit by a car in 2017 and needed a replacement after I received the insurance settlement.
While I was looking around I was fortunate to stumble across an advert on Facebook by Cycles Galleria in Melbourne for their ex rental range.
They had a 2017 56cm Matt Black Madone, less than a year old, ridden THREE times, literally presented as new, came with all the warranties of a new Madone and lifetime free ProCare servicing.
It was $2,500 off the price of a current 2018 model (BUT was effectively the same bike) and came in at just south of $5,000.00 for my like for like replacement.
Not as much of an unbelievable bargain as your TCR but I was pretty chuffed with the find and if (touch wood it doesn't) the same happened again I would be straight back on their ex-rental fleet.
    Keep up the good work

Cool bike and good deal but what exactly makes the TCR more of an 'all round road racer' compared to the Chapter 2 Rere? I can understand having an alloy Allez for racing crits but the Rere should in theory fulfil that 'all-roundness'. I suspect what you mean is you are looking for a light-weight c.7kg bike in which case a non-disc Rere could have ticked that box. I imagine the difference in 'feel' and weight is down to disc vs rim brakes. Anyway just my 2c, cool channel btw.

Hi Cam. So you're using the Enves - is that what you think - lol?? I hope your new bike can handle bigger tyres - the road's gonna get a bit rougher from now on 😉
When I get a "new" bike/frame I always look at last year's model. It's usually alot cheaper with just a different paint job. Alternatively, I buy the cheapest bike in the range (same frame) and then spec it up over the course of time!
Great vid, esp the wife's cameo - she was trying to give you an earful but ran away when you put her on screen - nice off bike tactics and v.funny👍

Cam, I jealous! How many bikes do you own?
My wife wants to invest in a Tandem bike. We ride road bikes and ever since I mentioned that I was going to invest in an aero bike, she's been bugging me to ride Tandem with her. 😩

I must say, the Giant TCR Advanced is every bit as beautiful as the other very handsome bike of yours, the black one. Half the more expensive road and gravel bikes aren't half as pretty. Never mind its weight. It's a classic.
The Giant road and gravel bikes, even as new, are some of the best value while still looking and feeling on par with the best. The TCR Advanced of obviously a beauty, but the €1.800 Defy Advanced is very handsome, too. Idem, the slightly more expensive Revolt Advanced (although I'd prefer a pair of slicker seat stays, like in the more expensive Salsa WarBird 2019 or the Norco Search XR drive-side rear end).
I personally am more into the combination of looks, speed and versatility (i.e., compatibility with racks and mudguards and wider wheels when needed, as well as braking fit for loaded descents without wrecking precious carbon wheels) - and for this reason I wouldn't go with rim brakes (especially since Myself am considerably heavier than I should be, alas). But that frame is gorgeous and won't age much in looks. And the wheels are lovely, too.

Great vid and I agree with your whole process of purchasing that great used bike. Excellent purchase but give your wife back her wheels even if she doesn’t ride as much as you do-be safe brother😄❤️

Maybe a topic for the full review, how is the TCR more of an all round road race bike? if you’re saving, for example, a kilo over the Chapter2 wouldn’t the aero credentials make up for that shortcoming?

That is an absolute steal. Were you lucky with the ISP length or did the spacers help you out? I just bought myself the same frameset (in the Sunweb colours) and it cost more than your full bike :( Who said mid-life crisis? Enjoy the bike and I'd love to see a 200 km and a longer term review and especially interested in your thoughts on the ISP and ride quality.

Can't afford a Cipollini so it's always been a toss up between this and the SLR (Al) version for 'dream bike'. 11sp Ultegra (no di2) is pretty much the pinnacle of Shimano mech and the frame supposedly has snappy handling.

Can, I soon will have a story very similar. I stopped by a bike shop this past weekend and they rent bikes, and guess what was hanging as a rental, but also for sale...a GIANT TCR (Blue/Grey). Ya Boi, may be getting one too as you have...we shall see what the near future holds. 😎🤩😎

The wheels make the biggest difference. The TCR is a sweet frameset and builds up super light with rim brakes and tubulars.

Hey Cam again, question, how would you compare the ride quality of a TCR vs a Tarmac?

    • @CamNicholls
      @CamNicholls  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Devon Teller sorry if I missed your original question mate. I fell way behind! They’re very close. I’d say the Tarmac is a touch faster in a straight line because of its recent Tube shape changes to be more like the Venge. Outside of that, they’re both light, stiff, hold their lines well and look great. TCR is a lot cheaper too, so it’s hard to go past.
