  • What is the effect of over tourism and the rise of the Digital Nomad? Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La palma, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote - what do they all have in common, and are there people living in caves as a result?
    With protests planned on the 20th of April 2024, in this video I speak to a local who talks about some of the issues, and tour a few of the local tourist spots.

    I am sorry for my English, I am from the Canary Islands and I am 23 years old, since I was born I have always lived in a not very wealthy family, and today I know that I am going to have to leave my island, because although I have trained as a nurse and I'm going to have a good job, I don't think the Camarian Islands have a good future.
    Housing prices do not stop rising, taxes are increasingly higher, they take more and more money from the self-employed in taxes and politics is a circus in which there are monkeys with shotguns, Spain is going from bad to worse and That's why the only solution I see is to leave here.
    To all the people who come to the Canary Islands, we wish you to have an incredible stay on the islands since they are beautiful and from my point of view neither tourism nor nomads are to blame for the fact that we Canarians live worse with each passing year, The only causes of this problem are our politicians. Ignore the graffiti you see on the islands, they do not reflect what we Canary Islanders really think.

    Isn't this just an inequality issue, rather than a digital nomad issue? Eventually, the same problem would arise if you replaced all the digital nomads with rich landlords (either local or foreign). They would still scoop-up property at cheap local prices to then accrue rents via Airbnb... Why not, instead, focus on establishing policies to limit the total amount of property allowed to be used as holiday homes? 1) It would reduce the number of total tourists being able to come to the islands, reducing environmental pressures. 2) Rental prices for holiday home would increase, leading to more taxes being collected which could be then used to ensure a fair market for locals (subsidized rents, council housing etc)

    • @raymondhewitt
      @raymondhewitt  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think you’ve hit the nail on the head, there aren’t sufficient protections to limit the number of properties being used as holiday homes or airbnbs. It’s a supply and demand problem

    The main issue with digital nomads it's not some kind of hate to foreign people or something, (inasmuch you're European but that's other issue) but the fact that their solely staying rise the prices when it comes to rent a flat (not even buying because most of people here is broke as shit).
    Higher demand from tourists = Higher prices
    When digital nomads, mostly people who got high salaries, are willing to pay, and therefore HELP TO rise high prices in low income neighborhoods they are injuring the Canary society.
    If them, who flex to be "eco-friendly" "culture-respecters" and such things are what they claim to be, they'd be leaving ASAP, forcing the real estates companies to decrease the prices for the Canaries, the real injured of all of this.
    Granted, politicians ought to do something, limiting the amount of vacational apartaments per hood and the flats prices as well.
    But that doesn't take off responsibility from them, who acknowledging all the crap us Canaries have to deal with chooses to blame the system when they are the key.
    And no, toursim is not THAT important for us. Actually, we are OVER OUR CAPACITY, taking down half the hotels in the islands wouldn't make the slightlest damage to our industry, but help to build more block-apartaments, schools and useful buildings. The same goes to golf fields btw.
    Wanna hear the reality? Talk to the people from Canary who lives in Canary and not to the Spainiards who are from Europe and comes to injure us as well.
    Same issue exists in Hawaii where it's people are losing against the tourism industry so you can have a better view.
    **TL:DR**
    Canary'd be a better place for it's people if digital nomads leave. There wouldn't exist any bad consequences to the economy in such case, but the opposite. If you want to fix it, please, leave us alone.

      @xahc1438 This is mixing up apples and oranges... Almost all nomads here are renting from local landlords, so the money at the end goes to locals. Because all of them are staying for at least few months if not years. (So don't mix this up with short-term holiday rentals)
      So it's locals that are renting out to nomads, not evil foreign corporations... 😅
      That being said do you think the small group of digital nomads (and how you said European Spaniards) is really the most responsible for the hike in prices in a city of 380K people?

    • @xahc1438
      @xahc1438 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      as i said before they are the main issue. if them, who can afford those high prices cause they get paid outrageous amounts of money in comparison with the locals, are willing to help the system that way, incentivating the landlords (cretins btw even if they are locals) to rise the rents then THEY are the main issue, not the only tho

    • @milosviktorovic2764
      @milosviktorovic2764 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@xahc1438 aha!
      So people who have better salaries are the problem? Will you then protest against the landlords that are getting paid crazy money for the flats? Or any other people that have higher salaries?
      And second question... Explain me the math... There can't be more than 2-3000 digital nomads in Las Palmas, which has 380000 inhabitants. So how is this less than 1% of people pushing all the rents up?

      @@raymondhewitt if a location other than a small island in the Caribbean Sea or in the Cyclades (for example) has 80% of the economy based on a single source, that location has a big problem...
      One thing I notice about those who talk about the tourist beauties of a place is that they say "the weather is pleasant, the landscapes wonderful, the food is excellent, the architecture beautiful"... but the people and the "communities " are often the last thing listed. This is something that makes me think. Unless we are talking about a natural park, a place is beautiful because it was made so by the people who live there.
      I think it's difficult to admit but there is a "colonial" vision in many people and attitudes.
