Last time was 80 years ago. 80 years ago, only one nation had nuclear weapons, Britain and France were colony powers, there was no EU and Japan conquered parts of China. 80 years ago the world was nothing like today. Last time was meaningless, this time, Germany can barely defend against a Polish invasion, let alone move troops somewhere else because of its limited sovereignty. Germans actually invented communism adopted by Russia / the USSR ( e.g., Karl Marx). They brought Lenin to Russia in WW1 when he was exiled.
World Wars went against this history and Germany learnt its lesson.

European security isn't a U.S. challenge either, even if we are all in NATO. It is foremost a European challenge. We can always help, but we shouldn't be making it an "American project". European security is a European project.

America isn’t in danger of actually being occupied by other nations, but it can indirectly be hurt by losing the chips that go into Apple products. Nonetheless all the biggest dangers are domestically. That’s also true for most countries. You can’t defeat another nuclear power militarily anyway. So a big part of how NATO fights threats to world trade is by sticking together diplomatically.
