Breathe as a Free Person, Walk as a Free Person | Dharma Talk by Thich Nhat Hanh, 2014.03.30

  • Freedom is possible with our mindful breathing and mindful walking.
Breathe in and focus your attention on your in-breath. Your in-breath becomes the only object of your mind, you are concentrated on your in-breath, you are mindful of your in-breath. You release the past, the future and your worries and you become a free person. If you want to keep that freedom, you can breathe out mindfully. Breathing out, you focus your concentration on your out-breath.
One breath can bring you home to ther here and the now. One step can also bring you home to the here and the now. From the parking lot to the office, you may like to walk in such a way that every step release the tension in your body. Every step bring you home to the here and the now so you can touch the wonders of life available in you and around you.
The seventh exercise of mindful breathing is to recognize the painful feeling in us. Breathing in, I am aware of the painful feeling in me. Breathing out, I smile to the painful feeling in me. The eighth exercise is to calm down the painful feeling. Mindfulness is like a mother holding the child of suffering. The first thing you do is to use the energy of mindfulness to recognize the painful feeling. The second thing is to use mindfulness to embrace the painful feeling tenderly.
Exercise five is to generate a feeling of joy. Exercise six is to generate happiness. A good practitioner can always generate a feeling of joy and happiness whenever he or she wants.

I was waiting at a noisy, hot, smelly carwash over the weekend, feeling crummy about life in general and then I did the breathing meditation, just one breath, came into my body and suddenly the rusty steel awning over me was beautiful, the clanking of car engines and shouting from the guys was like music to my ears and an immense joy just flooded through me. True peace comes from within. Your happy place is your home and your home is your body and you take that thing everywhere you go (in this life, at least).

I really appreciate even the first minute and a half of Thich Nhat Hanh setting up the microphones/equipment because he puts a microphone on like a free person. The presence, lightness, and humor with which he engages in his task shines like beacon of light in a world that is prone to distraction and agitation. It's such a simple thing yet so powerful. It's the sort of tedious task that we do daily and which are often a source of so much irritation and distraction, yet he is fully with himself and deeply connected throughout the course of that action. That calm, buoyant attention is an exemplification of this teaching. What a subtle, though profound demonstration of the kind of freedom he describes in his talk. Thank you, Thay, for pointing the way with your words and deeds.

It's interesting to think we fought a war in his country, against his people and now he is a huge influencer in this country via his broadcasts of his speeches. Though his voice is gentle and soft, speaking healing words, I do hear the strength and perseverance that allowed them to fight for so long against multiple generations of different invaders, and made them formidable foes. So in that gentleness is strength.

Very esteemed Thay has walked his talk for so many years. Tonight I was feeling very anxious. My precious Mom is 101 and far away in a Care Center. She can barely her or see. I remembered taking her to be with Thay years ago. She couldn't hear much but she loved how everything stopped when the bells were struck. And how people stopped eating and talking when you came to sit at their table. And acknowledged our presence as we sat with them. It was very "foreign" to her, but she really loved it and Thay. And getting up very early in the cold Estes Park morning and walking together in the dark to see the sunrise together. And the children in front holding his hands.
Thank you Thay. "Today is Today's Day."❤

Breathing and breathing out mindfully, we can arrive in the here and the now. The past is gone and the future is not here, our life occurs in the present moment. This practice brings our mind and body together to the here and now

It is amazing to me over and over again how much of the eastern doctrine is also in the Bible. One just has to have the veil lifted to see it and innerstand it. I pray everyone watching this video experiences the lifting of the veil sooner rather than later. God is in everything, and we are all loved beyond measure. I also pray that this man, Thay, and all who listen to this video or follow him, receive the full truth of God almighty, that He incarnated into this matrix called Earth to save us from our sins so we can receive Eternal life. Jesus is the only door back to The Father. ABBA has shown me this in unmistakable ways.
THANK YOU ABBA, JESUS CHRIST, AND HOLY SPIRIT !!!!!! 💥💥💓➕💓💥💥

This is the best advice I have heard all day. Wish I would have taken that advice once when being ordered by my government to take weeks of kick boxing lessons included 5 days a week too after someone accused me of not having enough life skills of my own.

Thich Nhat Hanh quote highlights from this video: “When you breathe in mindfully, you bring your mind home to your body.”
“In our daily lives, very often our body is there, but our mind is elsewhere.”
“It takes only 2-3 seconds for the mind to go home to the body. And when mind and body are together, you are there, you are truly there, in the here and the now.”
“You are mindful of your in-breath, and you release everything else. You release the past, the future, your projects, your worries, and you become a free person. And therefore freedom is possible with one in-breath.”
“With the practice of mindful breathing, you can cultivate freedom, and you can preserve that freedom as long as you wish.”
“You breathe as a free person, and you walk as a free person.”
“Your destination is not the office, the workplace. Your destination is in the here and now.”
“There is only one moment when you can be truly alive. That is the present moment. You have an appointment with life in the present moment, and if you miss the present moment, you miss your appointment with life-which is very serious.”
“The basic practice is to always go home to the here and the now.”
“Breathing in, I’m aware of the painful feeling within me. Breathing out, I smile and embrace the painful feeling within me.”
“The first thing you do is to use the energy of mindfulness to recognize the pain. And the second thing you do is to embrace the pain tenderly.”
“When you practice mindful breathing, and you breathe in, and you bring your mind home to your body, you become fully present in the here and the now. You realize what we call the oneness of body and mind. Mind and body are together. And when your mind is with your body, you are established in the here and the now. And when you are established in the here and the now, you are in a position to recognize the many wonders of life, the many conditions of happiness that you already have.”
“Why do we have to wait in order to be happy? In the here and the now, there are so many conditions of happiness that are already available.”
“If you really focus your attention on your in-breath and your out-breath, you release everything else, and you become a free person.”
“To breathe and to be aware that you are alive can already bring you a lot of happiness.”
“As I breathe in, I know I am alive. To be alive is a miracle; it is the greatest of all miracles. And, that insight alone can bring happiness.”
“With the energy of mindfulness and concentration, you can look deeply into the nature of your suffering.”
“Looking deeply and listening deeply is the act of meditation.”
“If you continue to look, to listen, to your pain, your suffering, you come to understand it. And, understanding will always bring compassion.”
“When you suffer, you make people suffer, even the people you love. Therefore, you should try to understand your own suffering in order to suffer less.”
“When you look at another person deeply, and if you recognize the suffering in them, then you see that this person is the victim of their own suffering. And suddenly, understanding arises in you, and you are not angry at them anymore … When you understand the suffering of someone, you don't want to punish them anymore. You want to help.”
“Compassion makes it possible for you to stop suffering.”
“Understanding brings compassion. And when compassion is there, you don't suffer anymore. No anger; only the intention to help.”
“Compassion can heal us. And that is why all of us should learn how to generate the energy of compassion.”
“‘Understanding’ here means understanding suffering-your own suffering first. Because when you have understood your own suffering, you suffer less. And when you have understood your suffering, it's much easier to understand the suffering of the other person.”
“The practice of deep, compassionate listening and loving speech can always restore communication and bring about reconciliation.”
“Once you have been able to reconcile with yourself, you can reconcile very easily with the other person and end the difficulties in your relationship.”
“You need only some time to look deeply to see the suffering in him or in her, to see that he has been the victim of his own suffering for a long time, and he does not need punishment. He needs help. If you have that kind of insight and compassion, you are surely capable to use loving speech.”
“You believe that the other side is the cause of your suffering. But when you suffer, you listen like that, you suddenly realize that they are human beings who have suffered exactly like on your side. And for the first time, you see them as living beings full of suffering.”
“When you look with the eyes of compassion, you don't suffer anymore.”
“To restore communication, and to reconcile, is something possible with the practice of mindfulness and concentration.”
“If you know how to practice compassionate listening and loving speech, you'll be able to restore communication and to reconcile.”
“If you have difficulties in your relationships, don't despair. There is a way out. You have to go back to yourself first.”
“The way is to begin with yourself. Listen to your own suffering, go home to yourself. Don't try to help the other person, try to help yourself first.”
“Understanding suffering will bring compassion. And compassion is going to heal you and make you suffer less. And then you can help the other person.”
“The first thing is for you to go home to yourself. The way out is in.”
