In i’d say about 80% of trap set sheet music they tell you the style, time signature, and occasionally mark accents and dynamics. Sometimes they’ll have a particular fill written out but even then i’d usually just play my own take on what was written. But you need to know what you are doing. If you can do that and master the essence of finesse and dynamics and where to place which part by all means but just doing it to act as an elitist won’t help much. And 9 times out of 10 mastering finesse and dynamics goes above and beyond just practicing major and minor drum scales. Plus I honestly don’t quite get what that would be useful for. Maybe you can tune your drums to certain notes but most drummers don’t even tune their drums for the next song they tune them before the gig to sound good and then stay with that tone.

    I'm a 63 year old drummer that doesn't read music. I play by ear and feel and it's always worked for me, getting me into bands. I've practiced to records, learning the drum parts and people have noted that I have a 'nice feel' when I play. Reading music has it's place but I have watched drummers reading music while playing and they come across as 'mechanical', not natural players. Each to their own.

      Based on the video I'd say the character is auditioning for a jazz ensemble, where it's absolutely required that you are able to sight read drum charts. Jazz drum charts are usually super easy to read, you barely need to know the basics of reading. They just give a count structure and provide a simple base groove for each phrase so you can feel out a piece without having to talk through each phrase individually before hand.

      I too am close to 63. Played drums since 16. I learned to play piano only a couple years back and all it did was improved my music credibility and resume. I was tired to the "chord guy/girls" speaking a language that I was a foreign to. Now if I am playing drums or piano in the band, I can articulate notes, bars/measures, and general music theory that I lacked as a mere "nice feel " drummer. This not intended as dig on you, but be open minded. Not all readers are mechanical...ask Steve Gadd.

    • @ajsiemers
      @ajsiemers 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's such a typical answer from someone who doesn't read music. I envy those who can play by ear but for me sight reading or reading notes or whatever you want to call it, has always been a useful tool to learn music, whether it be brass, guitar/bass, piano or drums. I feel lucky to have learned that at a young age. But never have I heard that I play music mechanically. To me that sounds just spiteful

    The real measure of professionalism in a musician is the ability to play with great feel and time even when sight reading. It doesn't mean the 'feel' player doesn't play beautifully or that playing accurately by ear isn't a desirable skill but at the top level you are expected to read and deliver because there is someone else at the audition who will be able to do that. I don't number myself among those who can perform at that level so my opportunities are limited. I do play professional gigs but my phone isn't always ringing and I don't expect it will.

    I'll never forget the time I joined band class in my freshman year of high school. I had taught myself to play drums in middle school, so I thought just playing the snare for the percussions would be a piece of cake. I thought to myself, "If these people who don't actually play drums can do this, then surely an actual drummer like me can!"
    I then proceeded to get humbled 😂
    The very first day, our teacher wanted to check everyone's abilities out, so he asked each individual to play a part from some sheet music. I turned to my friend and said, "Wait what. Sheet music??" I had no idea drummers read sheet music too. My friend tried to teach me in the 2 min I had before I was up, but it was futile.
    I butchered the part so bad that my friend started laughing his ass off. The teacher and the rest of the class were just staring at me in disappointment.
    Til this day, my single neuron monke brain still can't read sheet music.

    I learned how to read music at the school, but that was a long time ago. I thought that as a church drummer I would'nt need to use these skills on it, but I've realized that it helped me to learn a lot of kind of music rythms. Salsa, Songo, Vosa Nova, rock, gospel, polca, etc. When I don't know how to play any rythm, I write it and I try to practice it slow to fast. Read music can be helpfull for a lot of things even if you are a drummer.

    I’ve been a musician (trombone) for nearly 60 years and despite hearing all the reasons why someone thinks they don’t need to read charts I have just one word for them: illiterate. I am now the Director of Music for an ensemble and the drummer, who heaps of experience and a wonderful feel for a whole range of music is now learning to read for the first time. I’ve convinced him of the importance of reflecting precisely what the composer or arranger was thinking at the time and showing respect fit that person’s work. As a side note he’s now getting work playing in a house band backing visiting singers which he would not have gotten if he couldn’t read.

    I once had to do a music exam (to make sure it was still going to be subsidized moving forward) and I passed my exam but they didn’t tell me. Instead they provided me with “The Black Page” (Terry Bozzio) just to see me sweat for a couple of minutes, after which they told me I passed :)

    I grew up on a full kit, mostly self taught. In middle school jazz band i played percussion and literally had to decipher the sheet music and memorize the parts because I couldn’t read fast enough. After memorizing, I just ignored the music stands and yoloed it and actually did well.
    Now it’s been a few years and I forgot everything about music theory and sheet music.

    It was entertaining but Can't believe over 1.9 Million viewed this video. And I'm 1 of them? I'm 70 YO, retired, and just returned to "playing" Drums after a 50 Hiatus. I play for enjoyment in retirement , to MY Music : CCR, Petty, Stones, Mellencamp, Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, etc... in my basement. When I started to get into it in 1966, took maybe 6-8 lessons, practiced on a pad, and then, Finally got on a Set (in my day it was called a Drum Set) with the Instructor which was at a local Music / Record Store in Flushing Queens NY. Once that occurred .... I was Hooked on the DRUMS. I was given sheet music to read for the drums, used it for practice , but Predominantly played by EAR like many or all of us. I played in a Garage Band with HS buddies who were all learning their instruments as went. Then life took charge, off to College, etc... And I never played again until (I always played Air Drums .... it's in the Blood), my wife of 47 years heard me say That I would like tom go to a local Music Studio just to Beat on the Drums . So she played Santa Clause in 2018 , got me a Cheapo Gammon Kit and I started to play again a few months later. It took me a few months to get going. Now during 2020 -2021 I've upgraded the Kit toa PDP Maple Concept 7 piece kit (Used), new cymbals, purchased 3 new Snares , replaced all the heads, added a cowbell, all for Fun. So Baker, Moon, Bonham, Peartand most recently Watts (may they RIP), are safe !!! Well Who Knows, Maybe someone locally will start a Geriatric Band and have an audition .... I'll bring the Cymbals.
