    I remembered this song but totally did NOT remember how crazy the video was! I think the thing is, we were so used to bizarre videos back in the '80s that we didn't even blink at something like this but to see it in its own years later, it jumps out as being totally insane. Someone must've thought that having Billy perform in the Mos Eisley cantina from Star Wars was a brilliant idea and this was the result. Judging by the amount of detail on all the creature make ups here, it looks like they dropped sick money into making it happen too! Anyway, thanks for the great reaction guys!

  • @scottvanhille5688

    Thanks, guys, for doing my request! I got Star Wars vibes out of this. For a slower version of Billy, try "Suddenly." For another that's a bit faster, try "There'll Be Sad Songs." I really like Lover Boy. Patreon Movie Suggestion: The Dark Crystal.

    You have to react to Billy Ocean's video " When the Going Gets Tough, The Going Gets Going, featuring Micheal Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito. From the movie " The Jewel of the Nile " which should be the next movie 🎬 you should react to. And other movie you should react to is " Romancing in the Stone" starting Micheal Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito.

    Thank you so much for reacting to one of the coolest songs and videos sung by one of the coolest musical artists of the 1980's. "Loverboy" was very close to being Billy Ocean's second consecutive number one song. It hit number two on the Billboard Top 100 Pop Charts on February 23, 1985 and stayed there for one week. It got knocked out of the number two spot by REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling". The video is a little cheesy but fun and it's a reflection of the times when it was released. Of course, "Star Wars" would be the greatest influence but so would the muppets of Jim Henson. By that time Henson had already released "The Dark Crystal" (a movie you guys would probably enjoy) and that movie probably had a huge influence on the video as well. Keep up the good work!!

    Another Billy Ocean suggestion I have: "Suddenly". It's a ballad but it's beautiful. This is also my first time watching this music video for this song. It did give me "Star Wars" vibe from the Cantina in Mos Eisley. However, it also gives me Jim Henson vibes. Like the main girl with the pink hair looks like a Gelfling from "The Dark Crystal". It's actually quite fitting for that time because "The Dark Crystal", "Labyrinth", "Legend", "The Neverending Story" and "E.T." were really popular so that's the feel I get from this video. 😎👍

    This was always one of my favorite Billy Ocean songs - the fantastic groove throughout, that awesome guitar hook at the chorus and he really shows the range of his voice here. Always smooth as silky and you have to love the trippy 80s sci-fi video; pretty impressive makeup on the aliens for a music video.

    Your reactions are VERY understandable. Even back in the '80's everyone was kinda perplexed by the "Star Wars" vibes this video emoted. If you haven't already done so, check out the following '80's songs: "That Was Yesterday" by Foreigner, "99 Luft Balloons" by Nena and "She Bop" by Cyndi Lauper. If you're interested, I also have a long list of 1980's Hits.

    • @rosariocannistraro3561
      @rosariocannistraro3561 ปีที่แล้ว

      It came out only a few years after the Dark Crystal so I think they were going for that vibe , Plus the video directors back then and cocaine is a hell of a drug :) .

  • @WhatDayIsItTrumpDay
    @WhatDayIsItTrumpDay ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This brought back some memories. It came out in 1985 I think. Around the same time The Dark Crystal movie was out, and this video showed some similarities between the creature designs. The female alien here resembled a Gelfling from The Dark Crystal. And the Goat alien resembled one of the Serksis from that film as well. I would not be surprised in the Jim Henson Company helped produce this video.
    But regarding the music itself, the mid 80s (1984 to 1986) were a period of change in music. I distinctly remember seeing a massive change in the style of music in 1986. Production got more polished, and the sound field was filled out more with additional instruments and mixing styles. But there was also change away from the more synth pop of the early 80s to the more guitar and drum pop of the modern era going forward.

    Another great tune by Billy Ocean. Loved the 80's sounds. It was such a diverse era for music - Huge pop icons, hair metal, heavy metal, punk, reggae, goth, new wave, country etc... Everything was going on. This song was released in 1984 and at the time MTV was huge, but so were movies like Mad Max, Star Wars and nuclear war themes. Directors of music videos back then took many liberties to drive hits by making videos that were movie driven. Many artists really just went along with what the directors did, some not liking it at all. Many will reflect back on that time and roll their eyes but at the time they had no control over it. Record Companies spent a lot of money to make videos because it meant hits and big dollars. in return for the music. It also helped put many artists on the map.

    You have to understand how important videos were to 80s kids. Friends would literally say " ya wanna come over and watch MTV". They had to be like movies, regardless of how some of them have aged badly. Lol. Nowadays, music is so unappreciated for the simple fact that you don't have to pay for it. There's no skin in the game. The internet's been a blessing for new artists having an easier platform to become known, but a curse for overall album sales. We'll likely never see diamond album sales certifications again, we rarely see platinum lol. Back in these days, everyone had a working knowledge of music, and could talk music extensively, even if music wasn't their passion. Nowadays, I rarely find anyone I can talk basic music with, much less the music knowledge level I have. Top 40 nowadays is more a fashion show than it is music- based. The music is the soundtrack to the show. "Loverboy" is the dead opposite - the show is terrible, but the song is perfect

But you MUST do the official video for When The Going Gets Tough The Tough Get Going - from Jewel of the Nile. Alien love in the MTV days of the 80's! I don't remember my reaction to this song when I first saw it on MTV, but honestly, I think most of these video creators were just trying to outdo each other. Watching it now, it looks quite hilarious!

    There is another version of this music video without the starwars like story in the background. Basically you just see Billy Ocean singing in this exact outfit.

    Nightclubs were such a normal and popular thing to be doing each week in America in the 80's there were so many Aqwesome dance clubs to choose from. But one thing I loved here in the Dallas Ft Worth area was they were always playing the new music videos on screen so while you were getting your groove on music videos would be playing on big and small screens all scynced up around the nightclub from the dance floor over the bar and in the sitting areas some even in the bathrooms. I remember watching this Billy Ocean Loverboy video many times and I always loved it. It does come off as strange at first but you have to remembe Star Wars was just less than a decade earlier and Sci Fi was just really starting to take off strong, just look at all the Sci fi based movie releases and tv series from the 80's. And that reminds me now that were talking Loverboys, more LoverBoy please😊 May I humbly suggest -Working for the Weekend , Take me to the Top, Lucky Ones, May I suggest Lovin' Every Minute of It , When It's Over all are Awesome!

    Great... took me years to forget about this video that as a kid gave me terrifying nightmares back in the 80's, literally had to grow over it and now it's back haunting me on one of my favourite YT-channels....

    One of my all time fave ones of Billy's, great down to earth humble guy. 😎👌🎶 Red light spells danger & Tear Down These Walls are both great ones too. you think that's weird, there's a 80s band called Blancmange now they had weird MV like the songs called Lose your Love & what's your problem, now they weird ones lol. But my fave of Blancmange's songs is called Living on the ceiling. 😎👌

    The video is just riding the Star Wars vibe from back then. The 3 aliens towards the end are clearly representative of Jawas.
