Puro I really like Fjällräven and respect them and yeah he’s being ignorant, but come on he’s right you don’t need fancy brands and gear to survive and enjoy the outdoors
Puro there’s a difference between a little camping in winter and Mountaineering. This gear cost money because it can handle serious snow and wind. It has a great lightweight to durability ratio. Don’t expect everyone to know that. Lets see the cheap stuff handle Mt Everest basecamp, this company makes gear that good
Great tips. Here is what works for me when I snow camp. I always bring hand warming packs. I use them to keep my hands warm as the sun goes down & right before heading off to bed I throw the pack into the sleeping bag to warm up the foot area. Keeps my feet all cozy & warm. Another thing I do is bring my jacket into the sleeping bag with me. This way in the morning I have a warm jacket to wear. The other thing that works well is using a reflective mylar layer between the sleeping bag & mat. It reflects heat beautifully! The cap is really important when it gets into the freezing temperatures. Do not sleep without one. You lose lots of heat. Wool socks w/ a silk liner is optimal. Your feet will be extra warm.
I enjoyed watching the video. I want to say I am from Algeria. We do not have much snow. The snow just falls for a few days and then it melts. The climate is African. But I will teach you the techniques of camping and surviving in the desert.hhhhhhhhhhh... Thank you for the video.
Love the idea of the rain jacket over the foot box! I sometimes have the problem of it rubbing the tent walls and getting the sleeping bag all wet! Thanks!!
Well yes and no. It is a good idea to prevent drips on your sleeping bag, but otherwise I would rather use the jacket inside the bag to provide additional vapour barrier.
Closed cell foam on top of air mattress will keep you warmer than the other way around. In extreme cold, a vapor (vapour) barrier to keep your body moisture out of your down bag eliminates the need to dry it, which is good, because a nice, sunny morning with no windblown snow is never a guarantee. Just don't wear too many clothes in a vapor barrier because they are guaranteed to get damp. You can layer over your damp base layer and walk it dry next morning, without depending on sunshine. I used to winter camp in the White Mountains of New Hampshire when I was younger. Oh, btw. If you wear your long underwear for hiking all day, you will find that polyester will outlast pure wool in areas where there is friction.
I have camped in the winter, and I brought baby wipes to freshen up the next day, a canister of water to wash my face and brush my chompers the next day also. I cleaned my feet before bed and replaced socks with fresh ones. Dry feet are your friend in the cold. WOOL is also your best friend, not cotton, cotton kills. Once you get wet wearing cotton you stay wet and it lowers your body temp. I have found that mummy bags like you two have, are awesome. And a wool hat for the noggin is great too. Also synthetic material for long John's, yesssss. The next day, I would air out my sleeping bag of the slight moisture that was in it. Thanks guys, great vid!
Thank you. TIPS: 1.) Below 10 F. use a sleeping VBL (Vapor Barrier Liner) to keep the insulation dry. (and a light polyester or polypro base layer) 2.) Wear light knit or fleece glove liners when sleeping (Try it.) 3.) Wear a light balaclava or face covering that can COVER YOUR NOSE. (This keeps you from unconsciously putting your face in your sleeping bag tp warm you nose.)
Thanks for the tips. I once went summer hike- camping with a summer sleeping bag. So far so good, right? However, high in the Selkirk Mountains (B.C. Canada) it was so cold at night that the summer bag was useless. Desperation took over and I put on almost everything I brought, but the saving grace was using my back pack as a bivy sack for my legs, which allowed me to get some decent sleep. Actually I had to do this another time when the zipper on my bag broke.
@Alex Gemi Huh, even though other humans did it way before sapiens even existed, and we have done it for hundreds of thousands of years ever since, and we still do it. But since some people like fancy gear, that means winter camping is wrong lol
Good review. No you do not have to rich to winter camp but you have to be thoughtful and exacting in your gear procurement. I learned to work in the worst of winter in the North Dakota oilfields, so I respect the cold but do not fear it. It can be beautiful and soulful in the Montana and Wyoming Wilderness.
The best advantage of bike touring is being able to carry more gear. When it comes to cold and wet it's all about layers. Layers between you and them. I have gone up 5 layers over the course of a cold wet day, kept dry, warm and best of all not over-heat. So maybe it's "all about" layers and ventilation. Beautiful country.
not quite...I got a very reasonable german army ( Bundeswehr ) surplus sleeping bag ( not down though ) and it kept me warm and sweat-free at minus 4 degrees ( with the additional wrap of my jacket around my feet ) I had my head all the way inside the sleeping bag and closed it up all the way, so my exhaled breath could warm up quickly my bag. Plus rolling into a fetus position within the sleeping bag at the beginning also helps warm you up! But of course you need a good enough sleeping mat or inflatable mat to sleep on and protect you from the cold floor But all in all I paid just about $40 for the bag and inflatable mat and it worked very well on a windy minus 4 degrees weather!
Great tips. I knew most of them. Most of my tents have vents built at top just netting under fly. Not cold weather tents. Ha What I never considered was if you get in your bag cold it takes hours to warm up. Yep did that before but didn't realize mistake. You confirmed my theory on socks and thermals. Drying out the bag was new to me. Thanks for that info. And lastly, are you from Iceland, Scandinavia or other? Your English is great! Most Americans speak only English. I envy you.
I was just gonna say the same thing 😂. Zip ‘em together and have some fun. I’ll never be out camping again. Getting to old now. I’m always gonna love an RV. Comfy beds and a nice shower an a big Ulster Fry for breakfast. My days sleeping in the cold hard ground are well over. Everything in that tent may have been the best money can buy, but those ground mats were very thin. The blow up mattress was also too thin. Camping is not for me any longer, Mmmm comfort. 😉
i spent 4 years living in the Scottish highlands in the mountains ..some times in tents . I used a £30 tent , I had 2 tents one at £75 which i over paid for it and one from ebay for £30 both were the same in quality terms - i bought a £5 blow-up air bed ( about 5 in total over 4 years ) which they all blew within 48 hours but I cut them open and put dried grass inside. Because of the rain ( and cold ) you make floor boards out of logs or anything you can get your hands on ... this raises you/tent off the ground and increases temperature , while at the sametime keeps you dry from 24 hours a day rain ( one time it rained for 14+ days ,every minute every second of the day )... even 3000-5000+ HT ground sheets will not keep the water out , you wake up in a RIVER in your tent ( happened once ) . I bought a £200+ snugpak arctic sleeping bag with a rating of -40 ( man-made fibre but it kept you warm even @ -20 with ease ) but after less than a year it turned into a duvet ( zip broke - stupid zip design ) ... You need GEAR but not all this over priced shit - having KIT does improve your standard of living and does increase morale but seriously you don't need to be a weekend survivalist about it ... The most important things i had was a "hand axe " £12 draper metal handle axe which never went blunt in 4 years ( of course sharpened ) , wellington boots ( hiking boots = NO ), quick dry clothes x 3 sets , military 120 litre Bergen - which is the best bag in the world for the price - i carried rocks the size of babies in it , filled it full with sand for building , kicked it around , slept on it , carried supply's in it .... and of course solar panels had about 5 different panels - some worked out fine in scottish sunlight some didn't ... ( must have ) - bought a waterlilly turbine for 200+ dollars got about 1000mah out of it , load of crap .......GAFFER tape is your friend , enough cheap socks to fill a warehouse - just wore them until they fell off my feet . when i built shelters - i bought a FIREBOX = iron stove with chimney ( i think "outback" brand ) one of the best things i bought @ £150+ ....changes your life , but good wellingtons boots have a better life changing impact ...also got a £20 10000mah torch that doubled as a battery bank with 24 hours of continuos light another nice piece of KIT . Bought the solar shower bags - which are nice but they don't last long

I bought a Fjallraven G1000 jacket. I've worn it for a total of about 10 hours, light use, never in the rain. The right shoulder seam stitching is crooked and coming undone. It should never have passed QC. Made in China. I've been winter climbing in Scotland, Norway, France, Italy and Switzerland and high Alpine mountaineering for 30 years, always used Patagonia clothing, never had a fault. I've also snow-holed and bivouacked a lot, above 4,000m on one occasion, but usually a bit lower. I use a 30 year-old Blacks down bag I got for nothing and a 20-year old Karrimor expedition foam mat and a 20-year old Wild Country bivvy bag and I do just fine. You don't need to spend the kind off money talked about here to be comfortable. I do like my Fjallraven jacket but I would never take it into the mountains.
