  • Mustafa Ahmed Al-Omar, a 68-year-old internally displaced person in Northwest Syria.
“After the war, we lost everything. Our farm, our house…Everything we worked hard for,” he says.
As a result of vacuum bomb explosion during the war, Mustafa has lost his hearing, one of the most precious things he had in this life.
“Every day we were targeted and bombed, which caused our continuous displacement. We lost children, brothers, nephews, and sister-in-law in this war,” he continues.
His wife has been suffering from the Alzheimer’s, receiving regular medical treatment and medicines she needs from Médecins du Monde Türkiye’s Kelly clinic in Syria’s Idlib.
“I wish to return to our home, our lands one day…And to remember again what it means to live in peace,” Mustafa concludes.
Forced displacement rose to 120 million in May 2024, marking the 12th consecutive annual increase - a result of ongoing crises and newly emerging and evolving conflicts.
Syria holds the record in terms of sheer numbers with 13.8 million people forcibly displaced in and outside its borders.
Since 2017, Médecins du Monde Türkiye has provided 2.5 million refugees and internally displaced persons with primary health care, sexual and reproductive health, mental health and psychosocial support, and protection services in Northwest Syria and Türkiye.
On the World Refugee Day of June 20, we celebrate the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home to escape conflict, disaster or persecution.
