Actually, the Golding platen presses came before Heidelberg machines, and Heidelberg adapted the method of impression into their presses. Tabletop platen presses in Germany are called a Boston Tiegel, a nod to where the Golding presses were made.

The “frame” is called a chase, that is what you lock up the type in using furniture and quoins, I hope you don’t mind me pointing that out as I did my apprenticeship as a hand compositor 50 years a go.

The quoins used here are called Hemple quoins. Very old fashioned!!!
Random observation: that press sounds very much like the clock in the popular videogame "Majora's Mask." Part of me is now wondering if they used one to get that sound. Or had a recording of one on file. I'm probably just overthinking it though.

She has put the quoins in the front lay edge of the forme. If you have to adjust the forme for any reason the type will not go back in the same position in the forme. First rule of letterpress imposition 'never put the quoins on the lay edges'. There is plenty of room for the quoins on the non-lay edge. When set up like this there will be movement of the type in or out of the lay edge if the quoins are loosened or tightened. If set up properly there will be no movement of type if quoins are loosened or tightened as you are tightening type against solid furniture and chase. With 52 years of letterpress experience and 3 advanced Technical College qualifications in Letterpress obtained over 5 years of 1 Day and Evening per week at college I wish people would teach the basics. Ok if it is a single colour job on pre-trimmed card then slight register loss may not be noticed but best to always carry on good practice whatever the job. And if the machine is powered it MUST have safety guards across the entrance to the platen. I used to work an Arab Platen and it had horizontal bars across the platen entrance which moved out of the way as the platen opened. If you put hand into platen as it closed your arm would push on bars and it would trip a mechanical brake onto the flywheel and stop machine and motor drive belt immediately. Even if machine is treadle powered guards should be fitted. Not difficult to fit guards.

Good to see the youth have some interest.
You bet. I have trained many of these young folks - in my shop and at other venues... It's great to see how they take to it. Just the other day - at the Kutztown Folk Art Festival in PA, I watched an 11-year old boy fascinated to print on one of the old presses we had on display there. We even had a 6-year-old girl printing coasters (although I must admit, she did have some trouble pressing down on the handle firmly enough to make a print...)
The platen is actually the moving part that the paper is held against and presses against the type - not the ink disk. That is why it is called a platen press as opposed to the larger cylinder presses such as Miehles or Wharfdales. I must also add that the "expanding widgets" called quoins are pronounced "coins". I am a fairly ancient printer still running a Heidelberg T platen often called a windmill after 53 years in the trade originally learning to print on an Arab platen in the UK.
me, too. Began in 1962 at 12 years old.. Now, at 68, I am *still* enjoying this craft - after more than 50 years "in the trade"..

I think its there so that every time they pull the lever to print, the rollers can go up and re-ink for the next print.

The round disk is called a platen.
Robert Scheer . I am sorry Robert, but, no it isn’t and your comment will only confuse people. It is simply called the ink disk. The platen is the flat metal surface that the packing is installed on.
Robert - Minor correction - ,the round disk is the "ink disk" or "ink table". The Platen is the "flat" surface that holds the paper and presses against the form which is in the "chase" which, in turn, is mounted "in" (on) the "bed". No worries' close enough. I'm just an old printer - and stickler for detail...

She did not hand wipe the piece of wood under the forme or hand wipe the back of the forme to remove any debris that could get under the type forme, and she did not plane down the forme with a wood planing block and mallet before she put it in the press. All basic things to do in a presuure related process. Ok ... my earlier comments about safety guards may be a bit over the top on a hand operated press like this . Most of the furniture she is using is not wood it is called Resalite which is similar to resin or bakelite. I would not let children or inexperienced people near Hostmann Steinberg oil based printing ink or any other make for that matter. Oil based printing inks include pigments , driers and emulsifiers and varnishes which can can contain nasty chemicals. Safer to use vegetable inks such as those used for food packaging.
More impression! too much isn't a good thing just lazy make ready!

I'm sure Pam means well, but she has no idea what it takes to make a good impression. To bash the type and cuts into the paper just damages them both, and is not too good for the press either. Using photo corners instead of gauge pins is ignorant. It is sad to see so many people making videos about printing without a clue as to what they are really doing.
I think it's sad to see someone criticize someone actively teaching, using, and spending their time exciting kids and informing people generations from now in an art that is very much forgotten about. Paul, how about you go out there and make a video, on proper etiquette. Make sure you follow proper filming etiquette too, or else I'm sure people will immediately discount your very valuable content.
Evin Drews. Look, I’m all for teaching/informing but please learn the correct way first. The Hemple quoin (singular) was put in on the wrong side of the type and was not tightened at all. The whole forme could have dropped out. If we teach the incorrect way, what chance do students have to achieve a quality product?
Also, yellow pages are not packing paper. Packing paper is packing paper. We should use proper packing paper because yellow pages or other soft and pulpy papers will compress over the run, leading to a reduction in the impression pressure you started with.

@@evindrews I don't need to qualify myself to you, but I've printed letterpress for over 40 years out of a 50 year printing career, and have taught letterpress and book arts at a California state university. Judging from comments that follow mine I see that I was quite reserved in my comments, where I could have (and maybe should have) critiqued her printing process in detail, as nearly everything was done inaccurately. I do hope that, by now, Miss Lobb has watched the following video that was used for teaching printing in junior high school about 60 years ago. Perhaps you would like to watch it too, and then you might see the errors in the video above:
