I never knew this. Crazy how much hate, in one man, can influence so many.

The first steamboat on the Mississippi River traveled from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to New Orleans in 1811. The river raftsmen made money transporting goods and passengers and lumber by selling their rafts once unloaded. They had to worry about river pirates that would row out at night to rob them while anchored. Robert Fulton had a legal riverboat transport monopoly so overcharged the raftsmen for transport back to Ohio and Pennsylvania.

His gang hid out as far as the Kisatchie National Forest and the Sabine Free State in Louisiana. They supposedly buried some of their loot in these areas. My 4th great grandfather was one of his most trusted lieutenants. He was found and shot in the chest in Fisher, Louisiana, at a gang hideout. He was taken to Ft. Jessup and was questioned about the gang. He wouldn't give up any information and died a day or two afterwards, and was buried there.
