We have a safe room in our extra deep basement (I lived through a tornado that absolutely destroyed our town when I was a little kid). I wouldn't live in tornado alley without a safe room, my kid's lives are worth the cost. And by the way, when the sirens go off, our dogs and cats go in it with us, they are family too.
"🎶Sweet Home Alabama,"🎶 that's my jam!!
Pretty cool for areas of the country where your life would depend upon it!
This is what ive been preaching to people you live in area were there are tornadoes you own one of these you will survive the tornado
I have one Danny installed. Lots of factors y'all don't see. We just used it. A tornado hit, and while we didn't get a direct hit, we got the winds. You work with what you have. We have obstacles all over the neighborhood. I'll take my chances at surviving the guillotine glass flying around, underground. I am 150% satisfied with our shelter.
Back before these became an industry for yuppies, shelters were located in a clear, open area to prevent debris, structures, or trees from falling on them and causing damage or blocking egress. I live in the midwest, and have seen them all my life- they were NOT just outside the back door by a tree and the house, or in the garage like I have seen recently...
That's my worry, debris landing on the door and getting buried alive! 😧
I grew up in the panhandle and have been in a few shelters made with one door. You really don't want 2 door for "if" 1 is blown open then the other will open to and suck every one out. If you do have 2 ways out, you wand a door on top and 1 at the bottom that swings open to the inside and both should lock. And yes you need a better vents on it. Plus food and water stored in it with blankets. As gor me, concrete is the wst to go.
Yeah... GREAT design... no ventilation, no communication, door opens OUT, build 3 feet next to a house full of items to block the exit and only 1 exit... Wow... engineering degree or knitting degree?
pesto12601 ya got a point there
pesto12601 Most shelters I have been open out. Unless they slide shut . The house tends to fall into the basement.
Logan Garner still seems like a pretty poor design... look at the destruction in OK... there is only debris left on the ground... and lots of it.. cars, farm equip.. houses - heavy stuff. one of those lands on your shelter and you are screwed! Not to mention the debris and dirt blocking those stupid air vents right by the ground. This is probably the dumbest looking storm shelter I've seen!
pesto12601 I understand what you are saying . I just think that in a f4 or f5 tornado this is your only chance. You need to be underground. You can use a bottle jack on the door . I have one in my shelter. I would take my chances down there , in fact I went down in it when there was a warning a couple of years ago. Like I said I understand what you are saying . If a car is going to land on my shelter it can land in my basement as well. I have a cold room in my basement I usually hide out there, but if there was a f4 coming down the field, I would probably get in the shelter and take my chances :)
Logan Garner Hi Logan - I agree with you 100% that you need to have a shelter if you live in tornado land... but it seems like this particular design is just not great. Between this and staying in the house - I'd be right down in the ground with ya! But.. if I were searching for shelters to install - I'd certainly not choose this model!
It should have proper ventilation and a second escape route since there are possibilities that heavy debris fall on it. Also, bring a hefty amount of snacks like potato chips or some apples to solve your hungers in case if you want to survive. That's what happened to me and my family when a tornado hit my house and look, I survived!!!
Dominic Watterson water, food and cloths should be stored
@LbA well at least we can afford potato chips here....
@LbA how would I do that? Tell me, how would I buy a brain? Oh forgive me I forgot the 1st world country you probably live in has some shady brain black market huh.
Glad you survived. However when seeking shelter from a tornado I doubt I'll remember to get fresh fruit.
How do you use the restroom? Should people wear a diaper?
Very nice. I have a family of 7 with young children. Gonna have to get me one. Thanks for posting!
What if something really heavy fell on the door after a tornado and you're stuck down there?
+SEPI AUSTIN You could leave an ag jack and section of pipe with a plate welded to it then jack the door open if you like. (Using ag jacks as pushers is common but for those unfamiliar you slide a pipe over the shaft of the jack and when you actuate the jack it pushes the pipe. I don't like the setup and would use something like a cast concrete form (there are many choices) to protect the entrance.
Ob Fuscated Yeah that would work!
+SEPI AUSTIN ع
+Indiana Hoosier You must have a high water table in your area. You will definitely need to add some form of forced ventilation. You could have some port holes cut to allow air to circulate. For now, leave the door slightly open and put a small electric fan inside to circulate the air while you work out a better solution. There could be a lot of moisture coming from the curing concrete. That will be greatly reduced after 28 days. Give it a month to cure the concrete and see where you stand after that. Sorry to hear about your trouble.
+SEPI AUSTIN kill the oldest and eat
Everyone talking about debris blocking the exit may not understand that the state state has a good system to register the location so that in the event of a disaster, they know the exact gps coordinates of the lid. You should also have supports and a bottle jack inside for this as well. You have to consider the layout and space management for the rest of your yard as well. You may have or one day want a pool, still have some wide open yard space for hosting events and have to keep the septic area open/clear…Only so many places something like this may practically go but it’s better to have than not have. Danny just came out to my place today and I’m already happy to have found and gotten to know him even before my pending install. I can tell you he’s honest and believes in what he does.
I agree with the concern of placing it so close to a large building. Debris can be a problem. But I personally would hate to have to run 100 yards in hurricane/tornado winds to safety. I'd also like to see these waterproof. What if you have rising water and you can't get the hatch open? Oooof!
I live in Alabama, Birmingham to be exact and this is awesome.
No what happens if the house collapses on top of the door? I'll give you 1 guess.
Marick Thompson It becomes a casket.
Marick Thompson
You would knock on the shelter door until somebody rescues the people underground.
You idiots do realize that most people register their storm shelters with the authorities, so they know where to look if the house collapses. Or even if they don't register it, people will know they're missing and will look for them.
Yep ur pretty much fucked !!!!
What else? Of course you scream "HALP, HALP, HALP US" like in those holywood movies
Now have the whole house fall on that , very smart
Rob R that was my first thought. Not very clever
And a house can't collapse into a regular basement. Sure, ok....
I would always worry about something landing on the door and being trapped. A solution would be to have the steps on the outside and use a vertical door on the main shelter which opens IN. That design would be much easier to escape with.
That’s exactly what I was thinking.
@@Jesuisderetour87 Great minds think alike.
Great! It is so close to the house that all of the debris from the house collapsing will trap you inside for weeks! Yay! :)
Guess you've never seen what a tornado does to homes eh?? Turns them into twigs dumbass. And anyone with a brain would keep tools inside just in case.
falcondriver100 Tyler Boss is completely correct. Debris from the home does not all turn into twigs. Large concrete walls have been known to fall on their sides and trap people inside their shelters for this very reason. Let's see you dig your way out of that. I think Sir, you're the dumbass here.
AmieB2005 Really?? I've never seen or heard of a home with 'concrete walls' and I'm a general contractor.
What's that about who's a dumbass again? LOL!
RecordTrance Hahaha.. Show me a home with 'concrete walls' you moron. Leave it to the ignorant folk who know nothing to call others ''retarded'. This is some grand shit.
I doubt you even know the difference in concrete, mortor, block, brick, slate, or any other material.. You have any idea what a "concrete" home would cost to build?
falcondriver100 get off the internet you fucktard.... you are embarrassing everyone else in the industry..
How secure could it be if the garage landed on it or something heavy? I mean it depends how sturdy, and even if you are still pretty much trapped if its too heavy to lift.
Yeah, keep food and water inside and add a way to see outside, in the event of a zombie apocalypse your all set, you have a safe shelter
it's a little too close to the house, I would worry about debris falling on top and trapping me in there, but I did like how it looked on the inside.
I'm glad I live in a part of the world where these aren't necessary but if I did I'd have one of these in a heartbeat....
and then if theres a flood , you drown and if theres a heavy object or even a car or debris from the house on the door your traped inside.... GG
thats what I was thinking, could be a death trap without a second or third exit. plus its very small, I would want a bed in at least and weather/tv/radio monitoring equipment inside independent of the house.
I was thinking the same thing. It's so close to the house, a tornado usually rips the roof off first and then the walls fall over. If something does fall on the door, they could be in trouble. I would hook up some kind of communication device to the outside world that doesn't require outside hydro or at least make sure their cell phone works in there.
hmm well in Australia cyclones always bring a massive amount of rain and its the water the causes the most damage.
I would like my odds underground than on the surface when it comes to tornadoes.
I wish we had this last night in Garland...
Do they deliver to Arizona? No tornadoes but would make a nice place to store supplies for a rainy day. Looks like it could be easily installed in a day.
they sell them at home depot, its where I bought mine and that is what I use it for mainly.
I need to bury one illegally in the woods to use as a homeless shelter with the hatch disguised as a patch of ground or a fake rock or something.
Only issue might be if a tree fell across the lid, blocking your exit. But, I imagine the odds of that occurring would be so small it's not worrying about!
I think I'll investigate the space in my backyard for something like this!
That's my worry, debris landing on the door and getting buried alive! 😧
My only ?
What is a large tree or car was on top of that door?
How long could a small group live in there?
This was my concern too. What if something falls on top of that hatch, how would they get out?
Dad's got a new place for taking Bong Rips!
Jon MacDonald can you say,,,,grow room,,lol
george george It would not Grow well down there without proper Ventilation! Can you Say 🍄 chamber maybe!!!
Jon MacDonald just as good lol
Just remember to put a place to pee and stash some food in there too and have some blankets and maybe a pillow
And doo-doo
LPS MarshMarsh ::: and tools 2 cut yer way out if big tree lands on hatch
and a little wider benches where you could actually use a blanket and pillow. on the other hand, the storm passes quickly and you won't be down there long, unless of course, your house flew off!
a set of gaming pc, and don't forget about your family
Yeah, I thought that at first too, but if you have a look, there's vents on the top right hand corner from inside the shelter.
That's a death trap. At ground level next to the house with no air vents and an upward opening single entrance/exit that could oh so easily get pinned shut by a fallen tree or house debris.
baldieman64 If you look close, the air vent appear to be on the sides just beneath the door.
baldieman64 Make sure you don't fart in the tornado shelter with no ventilations system
baldieman64 Even I'm thinking same!! 🤔🤔🤔
these will sell big time in Austria
wow that's awesome
This thing would make a nice hidden bunker!!👍
should the door not be made of steel instead of fibreglass
W
wa
Faris Aa
yea steel is harder than fiber glass isn't it
yea steel is harder than fiber glass isn't it
Sometimes the ground moves and it might collapse internally. I think it's a good idea where there are tornadoes but it needs to be away from trees and a house that might fall on it. Tornadoes only last a couple of hours.
am I the only one who wants to fill it up with water and make it a pool or something ??
SAME!!!!!!!
Same
what would be the point of that ? why not just build a pool in the yard
Where we live the fire department has a list of storm shelters in the city. So if you put one in. Just call the fire department and add your address to the list.
i would put a memory foam matress down there and a puffy pillow and blanket and just sleep
It is amazing see how it works it helps from storms
I wanna hotbox one of these haha
Jay Morosetti right
Good thing considering the tornados they have blown through Huntsville. Be safe man... I need a price list.
I would worry about flooding.
Jonathon Vince Same
your biggest worry should be the whole unit floating and popping out of the ground.
Sealed entrance
The entrance is sealed with rubber tubing and it has a interlocking system.
روث روبينيت what if everything around on top gets flooded?
This is awesome. The manufacturer should make it where the benches and lift and there's storage underneath for say water, flashlights, radio, blankets, food first aid etc.. After a disaster if you get trapped you might wait a while befor search and rescue get to you
No supplies? Bathroom?
just do it out side as fast as posible..or just do it on floor。。😂
Would you want to a jacuzzi in a temporary shelter ?
The storm shelter was built for tornadoes, not nuclear bombs.
T.L.Genetics They very clearly had literally just installed the shelter before shooting the video. You can see the loose dirt all around the shelter that they dug out to put the thing into it. Obviously they're gonna fill it with supplies later if they're not idiots.
U definitely need a shitter down there !
What if a tree or part of the house falls onto the door or over the air vent? What if flooding rains come?
People in tornado alley should all just have underground homes
Yes lol
Emily
Emily I'm in the middle of tornado alley never saw a tornado before lol
Divonlam101 The only one I ever saw was in Yucaipa, California about fifteen or sixteen years ago.
We cant, The water table is too high, that's why we have storm shelters that are somewhat barley underground, at least in Oklahoma.
@HansSchoff good to know. thanks for the reply. the only problem i have with these is that if the house collapsed on top of it or if a car landed on top of the door it would seal in whoevers there. unless they have some kind of homing signal connected to a rescue team
Tree falls on door, people trapped inside starve to death,"O why didn't think of that?" dayum
That's why people usually fill them with canned foods and such
the doors on these things should always open inside, or if they're going to open outside like this one, make sure you have a bottle jack so you can get out if there's a tree on top.
the police department in your town should know where every tornado shelter is so if a tornado happens then they send search crews to every shelter in case something like that were to happen
Most shelters have a car jack type thing and some tools for breaking open the door and in some case's a tunnel or second exit.
Is this called the suffocation shelter?
I would store a long piece of 4x4 and a floor jack down there. Just in case the hatch got blocked. Other than that its a nice design.
We have this shelter. Have a ratchet set to dissemble the door handle if launched and can't open it and a piece of 4 X 4 with jack. no problems.
x4
It's 60 seconds to survive the game
luckily in England the worst weather we get is a foot of snow that brings us to a standstill. if you were to install one over here (i am unsure of the planning regs) you can be pretty sure you'll be raided by the police every other week to make sure you're not growing cannibis down there.
this shelters are mouse trap for people in it, if something serious happened, especialy in urban enviroment. In the woods may be. You must have second emergency exit, if you dont have it, you are scrued if you are attaced.
you are never safe from tornados
That's luxury bro
Wow no ventilation I'm sure you will survive....
You would hopefully Survive a tornado and be sheltered for a short time , which is the point of the shelter. You would only expect to be there for a short period until you could leave or be rescued , better alternative to be stuck there , then outside when it hits ,
The ventilation is there. Didn't you see it? When the hatch is up there are two circular vents on each side. Those are not speakers.
For sure. Lived T Alley 62+ years. Pray every storm w/o fail. Lord willing and the creek don't rise as they say. Very grateful for years of storms forming elsewhere. Would still like to have a storm shelter.
It is a very good idea.....I think it should be further from the house that way you are not going to be trapped when it caves in on top of you .
I see nothing wrong with this shelter as its to be used for. Note there is air vents by the door....4 of them. The lip is above ground so rain will not collect inside. If they were in a flood plain I'm sure they would not be in it during a flood. I would put mine away from buildings more but they could not he said. As for the people who say don't build where tornados can happen better move to alaska or Hawaii because they can happed most places some more frequently then others. Oops can't live in Hawaii they have volcanos. ..bad things can happen anywhere.
Yes there are 4 vents but they are only adequate for 2 adults. Federal Guidelines found in the ICC-500 and various other building codes. If you had 4 occupants you would need 8 of these particular vents. This shelter is going to over heat from the occupants body heat very quickly because of the lack of ventilation. Building codes also require structures to be at least 18 inches or more from the foundation. This shelter was installed entirely too close to the foundation. Is it ok to spend thousands of dollars for non-compliant and 'good enough'?
Well said.
I want one
Needs additional exit, communications, water, food. If something heavy lands on that door it could become a tomb. It is good this inventor is thinking of saving lives but the obvious flaws here are deadly.
I have one, it's safe and you can get out with a simple call of a cell phone.they come in handy when the wife is pissed off with you, just lock yourself in.
One nice quick ready made intallation...
Gave me some idea...
perfect for the Huntsville area (Tornado Alley!)
Thanks for posting!
How does air get in the shelter..?
Did you see the four black circles that look like speakers? Those are the air vents.
It looks like the roof is covering it though
+MiXeD_UP aNd_INSANE! When the hatch is open you can see the metal guards on the outer edge. It looks like the air goes underneath the hatch where the guards are.
Oh
Excellent Livesaving Product. The BEST.
nice coffin
Probably why it's a tornado shelter. Houses in Tornado alley have had shelters like these for 150 yrs. Just a crude hand dug cellar. It works.
What happens when a tree falls on the hatch ? Trapped for life
Tony Gotts ::: till death do us part
My cell phone works perfectly fine in there and I always make sure its charged.
Are you being serious or exaggerating?
Looks good. If a house does fall on top I'm sure your other family members will let someone know. Maybe even let the fire department know you have it a head of time. Anyhow I think you have a great solution to bad storms.
Use your cell phone to call for help? What happens if cell phone towers are damaged during the hurricane or tornado and you cannot get a signal?
If you are trapped in there, you are in a coffin.
Coffins don't have plastic walls that you can break
LatifaShaqueefa It's a fucking storm shelter, good luck trying to break through one of its rienforced METAL walls with 2 or even 3 layers to get through, some of them even have concrete poured into the hollow walls for even more strength.. hah.
***** Oh so you sit in an electrocution room while lightning is striking? It's not metal, and there is no concrete. You have a funny imagination
I've seen a tv show about bomb shelters being made from layers of metal sheets, with concrete poared into the gaps in the walls for strength.
***** bombs aren't made of electricity, so it make sense that way. you said this is a storm shelter. lightning is made of electricity
Before severe weather, you bring your disaster kit to your cellar, especially after a tornado watch is issued. I think there's a tube that provides some filtering, but you're only in there for a few hours, even if your trapped (your kit contains a hammer in case you're trapped).
What if you have to go really bad? That would stink
+Jomievolution8 bucket, it's better than being killed by the tornado
+Joseph England That is true my friend... That is true!!!
Yeah you leave a bucket in there and pour it out evertime or just pee yourself it wont hurt
Jomievolution8 several tupperware containers w/ airtight lids that were included in the shelter beforehand maybe...
not sure at all how this may be anchored if at all, but if it isnt, there is a good chance it would "float" out of the ground with heavy rains and high ground saturation, seen it before with pre-cast swimming pools, I am guessing however that this might have been addressed with some sort of spanning anchor guy or concrete caisson and cable deal, anyway this is pretty neat idea and I would like to have one for use as a prepping cellar.
if they wife gets on your nerves go underground😂😂😂
Michael Brabham I have to admit that this comment made me laugh 🤣🤣🤣
rokc
Very funny smartass !
M.I. C Lol. And alternatively... if my husband gets on my nerves I can be like “underground man cave ready for ya right over there... no need to wait for a twister” : p
it HAS vents! there are four openings, 2 on each side of the door. as far as stores, its a storm shelter, not a bomb or fallout shelter, designed to be used while a storm passes over, youd be in it for a few hours tops. and you CAN stock it with non perishable food if you want. some come with a jack for the door in the event you cannot open it because of debris.
Looks like a great place to smoke some weed.
welcome to my hot box room
Alex Little "Dude lock the door a tornado is coming!"
"Has anyone seen my lighter? I think I left it inside one second"
+FusRoDah2 Wait I got it right here 😁 wait FUCK where did it go NOOOO
+FusRoDah2 Wait I got it right here 😁 wait FUCK where did it go NOOOO
Love it lol
Doors should open inward because the tornado can suck that door right out. The reason they make them open outward is that it is easier to build because the open door does not conflict with the staircase. To open inward, there would need to be a sliding action as well.
I'm scared of tornados I'm only 8
I dont live in tornado alley and I still have almost got some.
As others noted here, likly in a storm something heavy could land on top. Like being buried alive. If I had one, it'd be in an open area, some electric and ventilation and an alternate exit.
Oh yeah earlier I was watching 1000 degree knife videos
Would put gravel around the entrance door... To help with drainage and keep the mud out ! Also a couple of sealed buckets from Low's or Home Depot. One for Emergency Supplies like: LED Flashlight, AM/FM/WB Radio, Food, Water, back-up battery (power) for the cellphone, Sump Pump (?), AC Power with GFI... and an outside flashing light and/or horn to call for rescue (dig ME out ! ! !). tjl
what if you had too pee!!!!
+Anna Lynn water bottles.
+Anna Lynn you
think peeing is a priority while there is a tornado over you possibly destroying your home
Pee into underpants
Do what astronauts did, pee in your pants.
Are Poop Lol
If something heavy fell on it during the storm, how would you get out?
you can see the holes on the side for air @ 1:55
Wow that's amazing
A Quick Question: Why not build a storm shelter inside the house with the exit to outside of the house? Would that be easier to access when tornado hits?
Debris Could fall on top of door and you would be trapped
Shelter with entrance from home. And a secondary entrance/ exit out side away from trees, or structures. With portapodies, meds, food places to lay down. Hand cranked/ batter emergencys band radios.. imporat documents in fier/ water proof bages, spare clothing. And camping gear should be stored somewhere acessable.
In tornado city and places like that have they ever thought of using shipping containers. I am sure the containers may withstand a tornado, maybe some containers underground acting as anchor and basement bunker, making sure the containers grounded not to give electric shocks, you canould make the place look real dapper like brand new and everything. if you have house insurance it may be a cheap option, but it needs to be protected from lightning. and you may build a balconey for Barbicues etc
Sweet home Alabama
I live in NC, do you guys ship or install in my state?
it's call 'GET A RADIO' aka two way radio or CB,etc. Something you'd beable to use to call help. Course in storms you'll commonly have 'supples' down there to last a good few hours or day maybe.
You might want to tell people that a shelter like this won't work on clay expansive soil. It will get pushed out of the ground during heavy rainfall. Just happened yesterday in Oklahoma.
Not with the rods that hold it in place. Alabama is clay. Mine is exactly where it was installed, despite 21 inches of rain in one year.
So first, you have to go outside into the storm just to get in it. Second, if the house gets totalled and ends up on TOP of your hatch, you are trapped. Brilliant.
No most people would be watching TV, news and whether cannels in their area for storms and alert if the whether is that bad and go into prior to a Tornado or severe Wheater We have a rachet set to take the handle off the door Plus a jack to lift the door in the event something is heavy on top. NOW THATS BRILLANT..
the question comes up about something falling on the door.well I have one like this and my cellphone works great in the bottom of it.just call someone and say get this whatever off my door.
Storm Shelters look like A fun place to hang out when there is no Tornado
Whoa, a root cellar and a dog house I can retreat to when the wife's in a bad mood. I want one.
Thus why you put a hydraulic jack to open the door and keep it shut. Ventilation is a huge thing too. Fiberglass is a great idea for the base
what happens if something heavy lands on the door during the tornado? should keep a jack inside to help open the door if needed.
This looks like a very nice unit. My friend and I have a question about the design of all these units, why does the door always open outwards? We would have a fear of putting our families into something like that thinking part of the house would land on the door and be trapped underground.
It is not supposed to be build under or close to any structure that can land on it and starve the refuges to death. But it's location is always up to the customer.
My question is if there is some sort of shelter but for safety during flooding.
Do people build ground level (underground) homes to to prevent major damage? I ask because where I grow up in new york (not city) some peoples home where basement level to cut heating and cooling costs. Looks like it could prevent your whole house from missing when coming back out of the shelter.
Great idea but what do you do in the house falls on top of it or a tree blocks the lid
