Tig makes a great point about keeping your environment simple, which doesn't necessarily mean minimal, it's what reduces your cognitive load and effort. When I was recovering from a big health crisis, I moved into a 200 sq ft studio because I couldn't deal with maintaining anything larger at that time.

I love everything she does. You should also read her book. Her stand up is great. She also did a show called Under a Rock.
I love how Mayim and Jonathan sat back and listened as she slowly explained her past and feelings. Tig seemed to be processing as she talked. The space they gave her created a powerful interview for me.

This Tig Notaro’s episode is such a perfect example of how chaos can mutate into light or how to make a virtue out of a difficulty! So the clear message I get after watching it is: NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP!

Mayim's podcast is literally, therapy.
Tig & Cheryl’s podcast has been getting me through my post knee reconstruction surgery recovery. They have literally helped me sleep better than the morphine. That doesn’t mean they’re so boring they put me to sleep, it’s that they make me feel so good from all the laughing that my body and mind relax enough to let sleep come. I wake up the next morning and re listen to the podcast I feel asleep listening to the night before. Tig’s attitude towards life is soothing. I just love everything she does. She may be the coolest person on the planet.
Laughter IS the best medicine. You prove it. Thank you for sharing that.

I love that Mayim who is SO SO SO smart states that she couldn’t do med school. It acknowledges that intellect does not mean that every field is natural. I so appreciate the attention Tig brings to C. Diff! It's a terrible illness to have where you truly feel like you may die. People don't understand the severity.
I agree!! I had never heard of C.Diff until my late husband was diagnosed with it. C.Diff was horrible and terribly hard on him and was one of the things that ultimately killed him--listed on his death certificate. It's more common than people think.
@@mamaraine8963 so sorry to hear that. How does one "get" it.. like is it genetic, infection, etc?
@@moimeself1088 it's a bacterial infection. It is very easy to catch since the bacteria can live for months outside the body. It's also very hard to kill--alcohol based sanitizers don't kill it--only bleach and some other commercial disinfectants. You get it through contact with infected stool. Most of us already have it inside our guts, then when we go on antibiotics, the antibiotics kill everything except the c.diff and it takes over causing horrible diarrhea and other intestinal problems. It's very prevalent in healthcare settings. A person with c.diff will be put on contact isolation while in the hospital, rehab, etc.
@@mamaraine8963 thank you so much. My GP is always so quick to prescribe antibiotics to my daughter, and i was always hesitant. You just gave me one more reason, though she's an adult now so she will be making her own decisions.

Believe it or not, envelopes like that are still handed to kids who are told “give this to your parents” in public schools.
I am thankful for this interview. So many people don’t realize that smart kids and people of any age can have special needs
or “learning disabilities” and be in special education. And they don’t have to be “twice exceptional”. They can be like Tig. She’s smart and exceptional in her field but she wasn’t found to be advanced in any area in school and she did struggle and they did want to test her for learning disabilities. All of it is true. Thank you, thank you, thank you Tig for talking about it and thank you Mayim & Jonathan for this interview.
I can sure relate to Tig on the "keep it simple" concept for staying sane. Fortunately I am single, childfree, and poor, so that makes it relatively easy. ❤
I love Tig's discussion about her studio apartment and the rug -- the time in my life where I felt most centered was when I lived in a studio apartment, approx. 500 sq. feet, in a building called the Helena in Manhattan on West 57th Street in the mid 2000's. It was tiny and expensive, and the building was brand new so everything was really clean, and it forced me to manage clutter because it was so small, I couldn't introduce anything into the apartment without making a decision to get rid of something to make room for it. I loved to clean it top to bottom every other weekend, and then just sit there and take in the immaculateness of it. I dream of winning the lottery and being able to afford moving back there. I now live in New Jersey in a multilevel house with my hoarder manfriend, filled with clutter (and vermin!), and it saps my will to live everyday.
I've had C.Diff twice and her description of it is pretty spot on. I'd also add that at least for me it took all the confidence out of me. I remember a few times where as soon as I got downstairs from the bathroom I found myself running back to it. It's disheartening to not be able to control something so basic. I went from a solid 150lbs to 123lbs in about two and a half weeks. Not only that but the side effects of the medications where basically the same as the symptoms so I couldn't tell if I was getting any better. Completely horrible.
Tig is amazingly funny.

Absolutely LOVE Tig Nataro!!! I lost my twin in 2012, and was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2014. And in-between had my gallbladder removed in an emergency room 🙃 ❤

Love Love Love everyone here in this episode. HOWEVER, I'm pretty surprised when Jonathan and Mayim went to the "Ask Anything" segment - is trauma in your brain forever? Great but missed opportunity to highlight trauma recovery work to actually re-wire the brain. After many years of many ways to try getting my life back from childhood & other trauma, in 2019 I started EMDR at age 54. I'm living with a different brain now and getting a look at who I really am. Heavy trauma was too much in talk therapy and cognitive behavior modification . . I ended up being retraumatized and feared more therapy. So grateful I found EMDR.
Oh, hell yeah! I’m 70, have been in talk therapy for decades and recently started EMDR. I’m amazed and grateful 😇

Thank you for following up about the chaos question. Chaos in a kids life can for sure make it difficult to function in school and think about algebraic equations. I definitely had a lot of problems with focus when I was a kid, and when we moved to a different town where I went to a public school that was less structured, I suddenly started to fail, find it difficult to focus, and just stopped going to class after a few years, eventually barely passing. I also had a lot of problems at home where my brothers wife moved into our already overcrowded home and began to pick on me, taking her cue from everyone in my family who was already picking on me and eventually scapegoating me. Until eventually I just felt to hopeless and hated that I would go from home where I was constantly picked on, to school where I was constantly picked on, and tried to OD on every pill in my parents kitchen pantry at 13, hoping to get some relief. When that didn’t take I just sort of gave up and got really into music and nihilism.
I did a 'Tig Mayim' search (there's only one of each 😁) and I was rewarded with this. I love you both so much. Two super real celebrities. It's so so rare these days. I loved this conversation, thank you.

I got a similar letter sent home with me in 7th grade. I was already classes for kids who needed extra help. I too opened the letter like the the teacher told me not to. I remember crying because it had a bunch of check boxes on it for things I knew I didn't have and I really thought like wow this teacher really thinks I'm dumb. Probably everyone does. I never gave it to my parents and no one ever followed up either. It's crazy that I got this letter about 20 years after Tig got hers. Why would they still think after all those years that kids would actually give this letter to their parents? Almost seems like a trick

I have gotten it 2x since I was run over by a car. Staph 2x also, sadly my Infectious Disease doc has me on 2 antibiotics for the rest of life. One to prevent staph and one to prevent C Diff. Yay for picc lines, that made infusions much easier to handle.

Tig just did a sold-out show at my work. I met her briefly and managed a small meet ans greet. She is so fantastic. I am super jaded by celebs, I have met enough to know they are usually completely horrible people. Shockingly horrible. She is def one of the good ones.

I like this because is a beautiful history of superation and maybe helps many people in his struggle.
Pre algebra was my top math skill and a few years prior I placed in the 96th percentile on the Iowa test of basic skills. That meant that only four percent of our country did better than I....again two years later I topped out in pre algebra with a c-. SCREW group testing!

I am a big Tig fan and loved the interview and the bulk of Mayim and Jonathan's breakdown. My one nitpick was that Mayim mentioned avoiding triggers in passing as an well-known example of a coping mechanism, but unfortunately one that is more-or-less a myth. Most experts instead encourage graded exposure, where you gradually reintroduce non-threatening stimuli that trigger you in a healthy, safe environment to offer your brain the opportunity to refine what it classifies as dangerous or harmful. Completely avoiding triggers for too long tends instead to limit our healing and can even strengthen our fears.

The GED story is so funny. My mom an I can so relate. I am an engineer, and my mom works in a hospital. Neither of us have ever needed to show proof that we graduated from high school or university. it's sounds weird, but never. The only mention of our schooling is on our resumes.
Then... last week, after working at the hospital for 15 years, she gets a call from HR. They now suddenly want a copy of her high school diploma. Now? Yes, now. Why now? We just need one because we don't have a record of one.
Long story short, after a few weeks of getting one mailed from another state, she submitted it for the first time ever.
You surely had to show it to go to university. Once you pass that stage, the high school stuff is taken as given. Tig's point is different, based on her life trajectory.
@@moimeself1088 ... Nope. I lost my diploma almost immediately after getting it. I planned on getting a new one mailed to me, but never needed to.
